A Mirror?

Matthew Jordan sent me two photos, both of them picturing a living room with a strange “passage” in them. I’m not sure how this should work, but my first impression was to try and figure how these “doorways” could be mirrors reflecting part of the room. In the end I came to conclusion, they couldn’t be mirrors, even though at first they may appear so. It’s just that the higher platform of the other room is something strange if it’s done this way (no steps). What was the architect thinking?! If you have some other explanation for these photos, be sure to comment and let me know, Matthew I would also like to hear your explanation on this! Thnks for submission. Could it be that I was wrong, can this be a mirror? Dunno… If you’re into mirrors, be sure to see: Walt Disney illusion, candle illusion, magic mirror video…

  1. NO, not a mirror. If so on the first picture, if it were a mirror, the plant in front and to the right has several limbs that should reflect in the mirror. Also, at the bottom is a piece of carpet that is continuous with the carpet in the next room. Look at the edges on both ends, they extend out from the image, meaning it is not a mirror. Also, you would see mirror hangers because this is would be a huge mirror if it were a mirror and you would see some wall hangers to secure it to the wall. The next reason is the room off to the left has steps that lead up to the same height as the kitchen room. I doubt anyone would go to such extent to make a mirrored image look so much like a room. Not when that house was built, it is obviously an older home. In the second picture from the angle you are viewing the image if it were a mirror you would see outside instead of where you are looking. It is a no-brainer.

  2. Both are definitely holes in the the walls. For the first one, the scenery is different and if you took a picture at that angle you would see yourself. (I would know, I’m a photographer) Also for the first one camera flash is being used. Therefore, the flash would reflect back somewhere in the mirror. Maybe I’m wrong, but I think I’m right.

  3. for the second one the floor is a diferent type duh and the first one has a step with the carpet wrapping around the step

  4. wow, you can see to the left through the doorway there are a few steps. making it even with the carpeted room through the hole in the wall. and the carpeted room in the foreground probably has a step down too because there are 2 steps in the doorway to the left. i’ve seen houses like that before. they’re called “split-level”

    a-durrr

  5. Maybe i’m having a stupid day, but i really dont understand what is weird about these pictures. The raised floors are getting mentioned but why is that strange. I’ve lived in quite a few houses where certain rooms are lower than others. These just look like normal photos of normal houses.
    I must be missing something…

  6. This is, without doubt, the lamest posting for a visual illusion I have ever seen. They are archways – it’s that simple!

  7. well i think tht this is a picture of a wall and an artist has painted another room on the end of it.

allso is this a boffin clubo or somethin.

    sam

  8. what’s the big deal? there’s nothing special about this picture. it’s a normal house. the only thing that could be confusing about the first picture is that there are what appears to be slight light reflections between the left and middle chair, and there’s a very small one on the middle chair.

  9. The first looks like it could be a mirror, but nothing is matched up, so it is obviosly not. Murials? Good idea, but some houses are like this

  10. Uhhh lol If you all look at the first foto.. you will see the sofas ,,(couches) and in the supposed mirror ,, it shows a kitchen. WHERE ARE THE COUCHES? lol And the top of the kitchen chair should be visible and its not. The stain on the carpet is not reflected and if a picture was taken in that mirror,, the flash would bounce off the mirror and illuminate the wall behind it thus creating “bloom” on the window,, meaning we would not be able to see outside. And one more thing ,., the white windowed door in the lol mirror is missing ,,, hmmm

  11. The second looks more like a Painting.
There is no light or shadow coming from that room.

But I think it’s just a room at a different hight

  12. It Is A mirror? Maybe because in the first picture the flash from the camera is on but if u look closly at the door on the right u will see a flash coming out of it, Could this be the camera with a very goood zooming range or is it just a wieid light who knows but it looks like a mirror to me. The second one could definitly be a mirror be cause all u have to do is take a picure a side angle.

  13. HA!
The first one looks like there is a ghost in the centre. Look at the picture on the wall. Looks like a girl with her head tilting back and her mouth open.

  14. umm the first one very well could be a mirror but the second one isnt, if it were it would reflect carpet not red tile!!!

  15. its obviously not a mirror , think about it , if its a mirror , then the camera used to take it would be reflected in it too .

  16. The first one has a flash in the doorway in the rop right of the screen and the second one has red flooring while room it would be reflecting has carpet.

  17. Umm all you people who have been saying “There’s not mirror! *snort* Gah-huh I’m so clever!” you aren’t clever – you’re blind. It does look like a mirror but no-one was ASKING if there was a mirror — they were just saying that it was quite strange and made you think (slightly). At the top of the page it says “with a strange “passage” in them” — it’s just like an open doorway.

    -_-

  18. The first picture is a shot from a room looking through a hole that *used to hold a sliding glass door*. The room the shot is from used to be a garage or breezeway

  19. I really don’t understand why its got to be a mirror or something XD. Its obviously a poster in the first one its noticible that it sorta comes off the wall.

  20. it’s just a sunken living room, in my opinion. When your walking into my living room it goes down a few inches like this. Although, I don’t have the doorways mine’s just open.

  21. omg. are yu guys stupid?lol
this was easy; all of the rooms are the same level, it’s just that the bottom of the doorways are lifted up to make it seem as if the rooms are different levels. get mee? idk how to explain it properly…
okay, like if i was walking from the living room to the kitchen, i’d have to take a higher step when i pass the doorway, or else i would trip. ^_^

  22. You are all stupid. There is no mirror. Get it in t your head. NO MIRROR! Got, it? Good. They are 2 different rooms. You can see the angle of the side of the door. No poster, no mirror just 2 rooms. Plus there are no reflections. Now get on with your lives-don’t you have jobs to go to?

  23. They photo shopped the door way. It’s a solid colour paint so you wouldn’t notice it by the paint job. Look at the bottom, the detail is the type that’d be put at the top of a doorway. Very good trick, took me a while of staring at it to figure it out = ).

  24. why was this article even written? just take a second look before wasting another minute of my life and probably 10mins of your own. but i guess im to blame as well because i clicked a link somewhere..

  25. what the confusion? its 2 different rooms 2 different picture both with step up dining rooms so what the big deal?

  26. If the house was on a hill, it would make sense to build it up to the shape of the hill, but the ceiling in the second photo is narrowing down, which means the photos are total B.S. You can see the discrepancy between the railings of the deck. The second window does not show a top rail, and if it does, it’s thinner than between the 1st and 3rd windows. Not sure I like the lies on this site.

  27. Illusions aren’t lies, except in the most literal sense-if I say that there was a queue five miles long in the post office, that’s a lie-but it’s not meant to be believed.

If this is a house with steps, I’d hate to live in it; I’d be falling over it all the time.

I think that split level means something a bit more pronounced than this.
