Mean or Happy?

Reader called Daniel mailed me this black & white illusion. First I didn’t get it, but after a while I found out it’s great optical illusion indeed. It is real-life example of this multiple meaning illusion. Check the skinny grandma in the first photo. Instantly I presumed she was old based on her nasty mouth impression, or maybe was it because of the chin. After all, she may in fact be young, but with that mean and unsatisfied look on her face, I wouldn’t believe someone young could be so grumpy. Now let’s see the other photo (below the first one, inside this article). Wow! What a turn! She fooled us, didn’t she? I bet she is actually great looking gal, knowing how to have fun and being happy. She must be laughing at us right now. If it’s not much trouble, please comment if this illusion tricked you, or you guessed instantly what she did with her mouth? Thanks!

  1. I see all the comments before they are approved. I reject only those that are cursin’ and spammin’ :)

I publish negative opinion ones, cause I believe they can be right sometimes.

Critics helps me make the site better ;)

  2. My immediate understanding was that what I was seeing was a tongue, which resulted in me not even seeing the “mean” part of the illusion and so I was rather troubled trying to even “get” the illusion. Oh well, sorry!

  3. Ok I see it now, is that all!! It just wasn’t obvious enough to me, I kept looking at her tongue as only a tongue and not an old skinny woman’s chin. Anyway it wasn’t as dramatic as I was expecting with all that build up lol

  4. i had to look closer to see the illusion… to me it just seemed like a chick sticking out her tongue, haha. cool pic tho.

  5. I just thought it was a tongue from the beginning, there is no lower lip.

Plus, the line down the center of the tongue (representing the “chin”) is unnatural for a chin, as well as size of the chin.

But it was fun to try and trick myself into believing it as a chin.

If it was bigger, and possibly marked to make a lower lip, it would have been more convincing.

  6. i really do not like this illusion at all. the previous ones were very interesting, however, this so called illusion is unconvincing!!!!!!!

  7. it was stupid, it was obvious when i first looked at it that it was a young lady, not an old one.

  8. yeah, i guesssed a happy young lady.
i didnt even see the “old lady” until you pointed it out to me. i guess we all see what we want to see.
so do you often fantasize about older unhappy women???

  9. She didn’t look old to me because of her hair, it’s not an old woman’s hair. But she did look angry in the first picture. The second one is funny, nice illusion :)

  10. I saw the girl sticking out her tongue, and I couldn’t figure out why it was an optical illusion until you pointed it out, and then I saw the old grumpy lady.

  11. the illusion would have been better if her tongue and nose were cropped more. The first picture shows too much of her young nose

  12. Like other people I automatically saw it was a tongue and didn’t get it at first – after reading through other comments I took another look and had to squint a little but I got it. A little weak but still cool.

  13. At first she looked mean, but the chin did not look right, so I looked some more until I saw the tongue sticking out. Pretty Good!

  14. :(
Where’s the old lady? All I saw was a girl with pretty hair sticking her tongue out… I guess my imagination sucks

  15. its a pretty good pic i have to admit… but i saw the young lady sticking her tongue out… i didnt notice the old women until i read the reasoning.. i guess you only see wat your looking for…

  16. Im sorry but this looked really obvious to me,she was just showing her tongue. I was thinking what grandma are you talking about. But funny enough when I looked closely I have realized that it might look like an old lady, but the hair is hair of a young person.

I like your site a lot.

  17. i didnt really get the words above the pic [i suppose its an explanaion]. therefore i didnt get it, but i figured it out and it tricked me! i was stunned that I had been tricked!

  18. I thought she was crying(a young girl indeed), keeping in the tears, with putting in her bottom lip.

  19. I admit it took some imagination to see an angry face. I know facial messurements very well having studied art for many years and having been a portrait sketch artist so the “chin” took some imagination, but I didn’t think it was a toungue, but couldn’t see it as a chin either. I mean, the mandrel is thicker in most people regardless. It still grabbed me and had me sucked in. I enjoyed it as one I had to think about more than the actual illusion value.. Overall, great! But illusion? eh….I guess..why not? LOL

  20. I know I’m going to sound full of myself but at first glance I knew it was a tongue. Then I started reading your article and you started saying it was actually her chin so I got kind of confused. But then, they aren’t many chins like that, unless you’re talking about the Muppets.

    1. for sure, this didnt fool me it all, i could see it was a tongue, i didnt get it til i read the comment, but its still not very good

  21. Well I got right away that it was a girl sticking her tonge out. It took me a while to even understand the illusion because I knew what it was from the start.

  22. I didn’t see the illusion until I read the blurb at the top. All I saw was a young girl sticking out her tongue. That’s the beauty of perception. Everyone sees things differently. :)

  23. that is so cool! LOL! I THOUGHT IT WAS SOME WEIRD SHAPED CHIN, AND THEN I SAW IT WAS SOMEONE STICKING THEIR TOUNGE OUT!

  24. cool illusion. i did know what it was from the start which is why i didnt get the illusion cause i didnt know what i ws looking for. oh and guys make sure to get an avatar for ur icon. u can look up avatar in website search k? its will identify who u r when u comment.

  25. yeah at first im like huh… old lady? where? whats wrong with my computer?! then i read the comments and im like ohhhh perception… i get it :) very cool illusion! i instantly saw the tongue by the way… took me a while to see it as a chin…

  26. I instantly saw it as her chin but with her lips sucked in then i looked harder and then I realised it was her tongue…

lovin the perception thing its really interesting

  27. I think the first picture was edited, it cut of the left side so it looks like a chin, but it is really an actual tongue. the second pic was sort of the orig one. Did i make sense?
