Lady in The Smoke Illusion

Thanks to Donna, we got ourselves beautiful piece of art by Avi Ornstein. What seems as ordinary smoking cigar in an ashtray, actually holds a lovely lady’s figure. Check out the smoke… could it be only coincidence? I don’t think so! I first thought it was a painting, but then figured there is special effect made by photographers, so that the captured photo looks like a painting. The smoke itself looks very ordinary, and in theory could easily form this kind of figure. In reality, the chances are slim. Specially when you think someone waited for the smoke to form some kind of figure and then shoot it. What are your thoughts on this one? Still, a marvelous piece of illusion.

Donna Strouse: “I got this image of the lady/smoke from a power point slide show. I thought it was very fitting for your site and thought you might be able to use it. if not, I understand. I just wanted to share. Anyway, I’ve really enjoyed the illusions you post.”

  1. I have no clue how it’s done but at first glance the girls hairline along her upper left looks just like a portrait of George Washinton gazing upwards at an angle!

  2. The woman in the smoke is Marilyn Monroe and I think it could possibly be a picture off the set of “Something’s Gotta Give.” Seriously, check it out.

  3. i think definently true.
This is a truely capsizing foto that must have takin a tremendous amount of effort to get a picture of, and only a true, patient, gentle, and expierianced photographer could have captured the rare moment of action

  4. you can see that the lady part of the picture, all around it, is pixilated. Meaning the resolution doesnt match, hardly. It’s a ‘photoshop’ job. Although done poorly, it is a fun idea.

  5. Yea… i am pretty sure this is fake…… i am not saying its not possible, but this illusion is definitely a fake

  6. I kinda think it’s airbrushed because some parts look painted smooth, but at the same time it has that realistic look to it. Nevertheless it look pretty good.

  7. photoshop, illustrator, painting whatEVA. I need this as a good sized picture for a bar yet to be built! Great illusion, as I’ve come to expect here. Often. Nice yob, and keep up the great work. You’ve got a nice & growing group of contributors, too!

  8. Too bad the JPEG is compiled to somewhere around 80%, the smoke’s pixeled. Besides that, smoke doesn’t come from óne point out of the sigar ;)

But at first glance: It’s a very nice illusion, you have to look good to see it’s really a photoshop.

  9. Not an illusion, it’s art.
Looks like airbrush, nice, a sort of Marilyn/Spirit of Ecstasy. :)

  10. It’s cool cause when you 1st look at it, you think it’s photoshop, but it’s actually a painting cause the cigarette is obviosly not real.

  11. u can tell its a painting coz theres a signature in the bottom left hand corner!! u didnt fool me with this one

  12. NIce illusion! This is a very simple one for photoshop. Just take a picture of a smoking cigar, and use the manipulator tool to push and pull the smoke into whatever shape you like. That’s how they got it to look so real. Her face does look a lot like George Washington, though. ;P

  13. This reminds me of a comic in The New Yorker where there is a party and on man is showing off by blowing smoke rings, when they turn to another guy on the other side of the room smoking, who then puffs out the image of a woman.
