Ed Minchau from Robot Guy, was messing around learning to do mesh objects in POV-Ray and stumbled on this illusion by accident. As we see, the image is in full color, but apparently if you stare at the center of it (from a distance of about a foot) for a few seconds, it turns into shades of gray. I had trouble getting this effect, but at the end I managed to see it! Does it work for you as well? It’s connected to Hybrid Images illusion, only this time it has something to do with color adapting. Enjoy…
Wow amazing, I love Robot Chicken :)
Saw it right away… the blues and reds disappear.
Excellent one today…
try moving back and forth, you get another effect
i couldn’t c it, too bad;(
I don’t see it? what do I do?
I c the back and forth effect. the colors seem to radiate getting bigger and smaller. cool post
If you move closer you see more red but as you pull back the blue is larger.
Very nice! The first effect I got was that it looked 3D, but after I moved closer to the moniter (By estimating how long a foot was) I saw it in gray. Good illusion!
It isn’t just the colors, but the depth perception of it that changed for me…
I couldn’t get the shades of gray to come up, but I noticed something else. If you are relatively close to the screen (a few inches away) the shades of red seem to take up most of the shape. If you move back to a foot or more, the shape seems to turn mostly cool shades of green, blue, and violet.
Thanks for posting my illusion. I’m a fan of Robot Chicken too, but my blog is named Robot Guy.
wow it’s really cool when you move back and forth, It worked for me and the color changed to a dark gray. great illusion =D
Awesome, I can’t find this chicken robot thing everyone is talking about though.
when i did it the whole to right one went black
i didnt see anything
i stared at the center and after 20 seconds, still nothing happened
help??????
WOWWWW.
That is AWESOME.
Just stare at the middle where all the pieces meet, unfocus your eyes and try to notice the darkness of the colours, rather than the colours themselves.
Liz was right too..
A multi-illusion picture. Like it.
woah
Is this weird? For me the whole thing disappears. please tell me. is that normal?
i love oragami
i just dont get it coz i really dont werk xxjessiexx
i agree with Liz. it took me awile be4 it became grey, but when it did, the green still kinda showed.
It does work but it’s a very fragile illusion. As soon as you eyes move from the centre to anywhere else you see all the colours again and you have to start from scratch. I agree with elliex that it does have a green “aftertaste” but the point where all colours are gone does exist…
for some reason i get when i get closer it gets redder but when i back away its not that red anymore
Part of the fading to gray has to do with the fact that staring at any intense color for any length of time will cause the color-sensitive cones in your eyes to get exhausted and you will start to see only gray.
at first i didnt see it cuz i wasnt looking long enouf. but just like, i dont no, look i guess. it worked for me.
actually it canges color as u move ur head closer and furgther DUAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
yea now i have the gay pride flag burned into my retna but its cool
At first nothing happened. Then I started seeing the gray as my eyes started drooping. Then whole illusion went away as I nodded off.
I think it is harder for people with glasses to see the grey
it turned to a weird shade of green for me. stare for 30 sec.
If you stay about a foot away from it then scroll up and down on then it looks really cool :P
for me i have to look up really close and also for me it turn red instead of grey but thats just me.
the red changed to pink then to orange wierd i am gonna get my eyes tested!
When I move back and forth, it appears to flatten.
got the ‘bleeding colors’ effect & the 3-D one, but no grey…
This is awesome!
ok thats so epic
it took a while for me to see the gray , but i did and then it took a while for me to see the colors again, i liked it , very cool
Omg asson as i looked at it from 2 ft. away from the comp the pink was less noticeable then when u looked really close.
way. It was great.
i still see the green unfortunately
cool works for me
it has an afterglow too. stare at it 30 seconds then look at a blank and white wall.
