Impossible Wood Optical Illusion

My father is quite the carpenter, and I’ve picked up a skill or two from him, so I do know a little about woodworking. Today’s wood optical illusion, however, does have me stumped. I can’t tell if it’s some sort of clever manipulation of the wood and grain pattern or if this image has been Photoshopped.

Take a look…

If you look at the right side, it appears to be two blocks of wood nailed together side by side. However, look at the left side of the image, and it appears to be two pieces of wood with one on top of the other or one piece with a notch cut into it.

The grains of both piece of wood match up seamlessly, which makes this illusion even more difficult to figure out. And, what about the hand in the image? I wonder if it’s there to cover some key piece of the puzzle that will show us the answer to this wood optical illusion.

What do you think? Good illusion or no? Be sure to rate it with the stars below, then weigh in with your opinion in the comments!

  1. I’m pretty sure it’s a piece of wood laid upon the other with no photoshopping involved. The hand is there to cast a certain shadow, I’m sure. With the right shadow in the right place, it looks like the two pieces are twisted! Just look at the wooden lines in the two pieces of wood. Find where they’re connected and you’ll see it if you concentrate on the shadow. (The two sides of the lower piece look different. One side is lines (just like the side of the top one), the other side is rings. Thanks to the lighting, shadow and the perspective (and the fact that the rings are outwards and the lines upwards on the lower block), it looks like the two different wooden pieces are one and the same on the upper side of the picture (: )

  2. I really enjoyed this illusion!! I am never disappointed with this website, and I suggest it to my friends all the time. Thanks for always making the illusions great!!! :)
