Which Way Does The Window Face?

Kelly Harris asks us: “Which way does the window face”? Let’s see! Umm… Not as simple as I thought it would be. The principle of this Escher like, impossible object is same as with bidirectional face and safe doors illusion. This is old school illusion, as you see. I kinda like them more. Kelly also writes: “I’ve spent two weeks at work going through all of your illusions – very interesting. Found this at another site but unsure where. I hadn’t seen it in your collection”. By the way, just found out that the author behind this is Sandro Del Prete.

  1. Actually, it’s obvious you’re looking at it from below. All the shadowside facings go in that direction, and you have to actually ignore them to “see” it the other way, as in the other direction, they don’t exist. Therefore it’s not an intentional escher-style illusion at all.

  2. I take it back.

The windowsill is drawn to be seen from above, while the window is drawn to be seen from below.

But if you cut out either part, it’s consistently one or the other.

  3. The top part of the window is facing the way that the girl is looking and the bottom part seems to be facing the same way the cat (or whatever is next to the girl inside) Is facing. Its really cool!

  4. if you look at the top of the drawing the objects that stick out say that you are looking at it from the bottom left. If you look at the bottom of the pic the objects sugest you are looking at it from the top right of the window.
both are impossible in real life hence why it is trippy.

  5. when u look on the lower part it is going to the left, and reverse.. easy as that… this is not illusion, it is a trick…

  6. Looking at the faces (their right profile is visible) and the assumption that they are looking directly through the window (and not pushing their right cheek on the windows), we can conclude the window is facing RIGHT! :)
