What Depression Really Feels Like | Depression Illusion

Depression is one of the most common mental health disorders in the United States, with millions of people suffering each year. And that’s only the ones that reach out for professional help. There are still many more people who suffer in silence. Trying to communicate what it’s like to deal with depression can be difficult, to say the least, and impossible at best. It’s a frustrating, confusing, and disheartening disorder, and it can be hard to communicate the symptoms. This depression illusion ad campaign created by Samaritans of Singapore (SOS) really sums up how it feels to deal with depression…

This depression illusion at first looks like the words “I’m fine” scrawled across the wood. The SOS logo and tag line, however, is printed upside down, giving viewers a hint to look at the words from another angle. Only when the depression illusion is flipped can we see that it also actually says “Save me”.

Here’s another depression illusion from the same ad campaign…

The first image clearly reads “Life is great”; but, when the depression illusion is turned upside down, we can see that it also reads “I hate myself”.

The tagline for this ad campaign is quite fitting as well. It reads “The signs are there if you read them. Help us save a life before it’s too late.” This is, by far, not only one of the neatest ad illusions that I’ve seen, but also one of the most powerful ad campaigns that I’ve seen before.
