Volvo Tranparent Billboard

Meraj Shahadat Hossain emailed me this transparent billboard for Volvo. Supposedly it’s for real, but I would really love to get more info on this one. Wouldn’t this type of advertising be dangerous for drivers? Hmm… It’s really same idea as Nike billboard. You can see many similar in billboards category and some more in transparent category. Most popular: transparent billboards, amnesty international, …

  1. Looks (a) a little bit _too_ precise (including the right lighting), (b) oddly, unacceptably placed and (c) very much like Photoshopped bevel borders.

    Any proof available?

  2. This is realy Photoshopped!!! look @ the borders! ( an easy one too)
Why should there be a billboard, right across the road?!

  3. yea so this is lame. I’m sure it must be hard to find different illusions everyday, and I love the widget, but this one sucks. It is obviously a photoshopped picture.

  4. It took me a while to figure out what was supposed to be happening anyways. So, if it’s a billboard, and assuming it’s not photoshopped…why is the billboard in the middle of the road?

  5. Anonymous:

Why is it you always post so many comments at once? And in most cases you always have something negative to say? Geez!!!

Anyway, I think this is a pretty cool site !

  6. Photoshopped. The top just seems off. And if they did make this billboard.. why wouldn’t it sit flush with the ground instead of having that shadow there?
Along with the other obvious fact it is in the middle of the road.

  7. youre all idiots. anonymous is a name for a lot of people. if you would see the comment thing you could tell. anyways, is it possible that the billboard is just on a small fake road?

  8. Maybe the billboard is .. the entire picture! Wonderful! The edges of the billboard are just cropped out of the jpg. I’m sure it’s wonderful. ;]

  9. I think its a Fake road for Advertising. Its not in a Real Road. VOLVO Did a Good Job. I Sent it. I Found it in a Website Long Time Ago. I Can’t Remember.

  10. Actually, Meraj, the trick is to encourage good and authentic, preferrably checked/tested illusions, and discourage bad illusions. There’s no ‘always’ involved if it’s done right, and results in top notch ‘COOL Opt. Ill.’, which is what we all want. :]

  11. definitely fake. if someone forgot their glasses or something, they might not see the billboard and crash right into it.
    (DUH!)

  12. i think it is shopped because: a) top looks wrong, b)it is in the middle of the road, c)fake road? i dont think so because that would end up costing a lot of money, and d) Volvo, as far as i know, doesn’t make school buses. still it is still kinda fun

  13. wth??? is that billboard in the middle of the street??? id laugh if all that hard work was ruined by some driver smashing into it…

  14. What other people don’t seem to have noticed is the colors of the trees –
This picture was obviously taken in the fall. If the billboard was real, it would have had to be created and placed in only a few days (and the picture taken immediately afterward), otherwise the colors of the leaves would change and be different than the colors on the billboard. Not a good advertising strategy for a billboard to only work properly during a couple weeks out of the whole year.

Also, imagine where the cameraman is standing – not on the road. The ‘transparent billboard’ illusions only work from an exact point of view. Why would they want the illusion to only work when you’re off the road? Billboards are typically seen by people in cars.
