Vans Playing Tricks With Our Head

This short video filled with homemade optical illusions was created by Donny Miller especially for the launch of “Vault” by Vans Spring 2010. It had me fooled for not seeing the illusion at start, even though I’m used seeing 3D Chalk Drawing examples almost each day.

Did the video manage to trick you as well? Relatively off-topic, what do you do when you have great optical illusion ready to showcase, but when deciphered, it looks greatly NSFW (not safe for work)? This question bugs me, even though I’m aware I couldn’t share it cause of the youngsters. Basically, I have a subliminal billboard illusion, advertising some sort of vine product, but when turned upside-down, you see something very adult. Something similar to this. I got a scan of it from some kind of public newspapers, but am not sure how to present it to you. Those of you who aren’t easily offended, proceed here and turn the picture upside down.

  1. Now that’s something to think about. As in life, as well as illusions, it all depends on your perspective.

  2. These are very good illusions. I took me awhile to catch on, but when I did, whew, good job Vurdlak, good job indeed. Please keep up the good work.

  3. nice video, and the NSFW stuff doesnt bother me, i guess its a judgement call on ur part. u know how some annoying people react anytime your illusions hint at anything that is remotely related to mature content.

  4. LOL the billboard one was definitely shocking to say the least. i really didn’t think that was possible to have such a billboard out.

Good call on having that illusion be on a separate link, as it would be deemed as offensive material to a variety of people. Nonetheless, continue to provide the option for the people who are more comfortable with such material, to be able to view these fantastic works of art.

  5. I like how you did the NSFW illusion today too. Yeah, I don’t want it to show up in my google plugin app on my homepage, but links in your text are very acceptable. I think you should share these types of illusion, but not blatantly. Maybe create a Section called “Rated-R” (a U.S.A. concept) with a simple click-thru page that says that the viewer is prepared for adult material. There you can put offensive or overtly sexual illusions. Artistic nudes are one thing, but this latest one was something else indeed. Yet I am glad that I saw it. Sex is not the only offensive thing, I am sure that things such as hatred or violence/gore are also things that should go there (and I bet that there are some illusions in that genre). But your judgment, Vurdlak, so far has been acceptable to my (somewhat liberal) american viewpoint. Generally, if you could see it in an art museum, then I think it is fine for your site’s home page and the apps. No one will ever come to your site as a “porn” site or a hatred or shock-image site, but on the other hand, responsible adults may enjoy slightly off-color illusions as long as we actively agree to see them after a clickthru.

  6. This is great, and thank you for the warning about the “subliminal billboard illusion.” I have seen it before. IT’s not an ad for vine, but for a flooring company. The POW, “play on words” is the “laid by the best,” headline.

  7. Wow, I wasn’t expecting that at all! That was a great one! The shoes was the best, I was expecting like 3 or 4 of them to be real.

As for NSFW illusions… Well, I think a NSFW warning will suffice. It’s like that dolphin(or whatever it was) illusion, I guess. If a kid just saw the picture, they wouldn’t get it anyway. It’s the same if you are actually viewing at work, no-one else will see it!

Though, this sites aim is to see the illusion. That would mean that any kid would be looking to see the dirty image anyway.

My opinion, though, is that they should be posted, just with a warning. I think parents should take responsibility and supervise their kids when using the internet, if they are so concerned.

  8. the first are a bit lame for trained eyes like ours, but it was a set-up!
Very cool illusion, and nice build-up!!

  9. those were well done, totally wasn’t expecting the computer to be 3D, I like how each one has an actual 3D element to it somewhere, really helps to make it appear more realistic :)

(the computer has some actual cords running off the very back, but not actually on the table)

  10. lame. just make photographs of various things from above and print them out big-size. you didn’t really think these were painted, did you?
