Sunset Face Optical Illusion

This is what came in few weeks ago from Peter Taylor from York, UK: “Hi I love your site and go into it everyday through my Google gadget. I took this photo the other night, but only when viewing it later did I realize I could see a face looking back at me. It’s not the greatest illusion, but on the bottom right (where the grass and clouds interact) you can see what vaguely looks like a face. Do you see it’s eyes, nose & mouth? This has had no manipulation done on it. Perhaps if it did, I could make it look even better. Keep up the good work. Your optical illusion of the day is a good start to a normal working day for me. Regards, Peter Taylor”

  1. OBAMA! HAHAHAA! Nah, I thought it looked more like McCain. =)
The 5 dollar watermark seems more accurate.

    Awesome photo, by the way.

  2. oh my gosh, everytime there is a hidden face illusion some idiot has to claim it looks like Obama.
Nice photograph, but seriously people it’s an illusion it’s not “Obama’s face!!!”

  3. i think its all the way on the right just above the horizon?? are the clouds the eyes, nose and mouth? well, if i’m wrong, could someone point it out?

  4. The way the human percetual system works is by making patterns out of background “noise”. The “face” is what we have been preprogrammed to percieve. The illusion is in our minds.

Spot on – I was about to say much the same thing before I saw this comment…
We are basically “hard wired” to see faces; we create them in the foliage of trees, in clouds, the Moon… even the brown discolouration of a toasted cheese sandwich caused quite a stir (and a bidding war on Ebay!) because someone saw “the Face of Jesus” in their breakfast! :-/

  6. i saw the face but i also see what seems to be hands raising out of the ground but i know its just the grass :btw: BEAUTIFUL PICTURE

  7. Oh okay I see the image now its in the lower right of the image right before the grass. Try closing your eyes for a few seconds and then look again you should see it.

  8. I see the face just fine. It took me a moment, but I can see it now. And the tassel on the end of the really tall grass on the right kinda looks like a person hanging on for dear life to me.

Yes, the human brain is hardwired to see faces where there are none. So are most digital cameras these days. I’m not sure why people are complaining about this, though, because that’s basically the concept behind any “double meaning” or “hidden image” type picture.

  9. I see the face… Also is it just me or does the tip of the grass mid-left in the image vaguely spell FACE as well! Check it out!

  10. 4 those who don’t see it, think perhaps of shadows, silhouettes which is also known as ‘negative space’ DEFINITION: Negative space, in art, is the space around and between the subject(s) of an image. Negative space may be most evident when the space around a subject, and not the subject itself, forms an interesting or artistically relevant shape, and such space is occasionally used to artistic effect as the “real” subject of an image. The use of negative space is a key element of artistic composition

  11. i saw it but also in the middle i can see a manga face and on the left hand side i can vagly see another (sorry about my spelling im only 10)
