Punching Bags Sculpture of Ali

Mark Bessey informed me about this art installation which opens March 25th in L.A., by a California artist Michael Kalish. The project, which depicts the three-time heavyweight champ by using speed bags, stands two stories high, fills up 15,00 cubic feet and includes five miles of stainless steel, two miles of aluminum tubing and 1,300 of Muhammad Ali’s favorite practice targets. Apparently, it took Kalish three months to design the sculpture and more than five months to build it. From most angles, the structure looks like a jumble of boxing bags and twisted metal, and only when viewed from the proper vantage point, the structure becomes a two-dimensional portrait of the former heavyweight champion. Be sure to check out all of the photos I’ve included (inside).

  1. I live in Grand Rapids, MI and for the past 2 years we have had what is called “ArtPrize” in our downtown area. People from all over the world to compete and also come to view all forms of interesting areas of art. This would fit right into that venue! And big money can be earned :-)

    1. Why am I still in Moderation?????? Are you people ignoreing my comments? Are they that bad that you won’t print them? Please let me know so I won”t have to waste my time any more, Thank you…………..

  2. This is just incredible. Well, in my opinion the end result isn’t totally impressive (i.e. a two dimensional face) but the way he just stuck a bunch of those bags in layers in a seemingly random order to create something that recognizable…is astounding. Great find.

  3. Awesome! Would maybe have put more white in it to fill the face out more, but that’s hardly a complaint – clever bit of work

  4. Cool! I love this site! My mum loves the Area 51 illusion! Theres something on this site for everyone!
