Mini Planets Illusion

Chris Crowe submitted these few weeks ago. As he explains, these photos are taken with a special kind of camera which captures an entire 360 degree view of its surroundings. The result is what looks like a “mini planet”…. “I liked the effect, hope you will also.” – Chris. Actually, they remind me of Mini Planets that Little Prince had to visit on his journey… If you haven’t heard of this famous book by Antoine de Saint Exupery, be sure to read it! Now jump inside this article to see full set of 30 photos. Which one did you like the best? Why? You can also find simmilar illusions in our new forum.

  1. Man, is this done in photoshop? It seems as if they are stitching together some really wide angle shots.. But i’d rly like to know :-D

  2. why isnt there a blank spot in the middle of the image where the camera itself is?? and i’d love to know how that camera actually works and what holds it up if it takes a 360 shot!!
anyway these are still absolutely awesome!!!

  3. Wow, gotta get me one of those.
The reverse one reminds me of halo.
The off-center one with the telephone lines is cool too.

  4. i still dont really get how the camera isnt included in these shots :S
hows it being held up etc.

for exampe the beach shot … theres no shaddow
or the one over the water, hows the camera up there.

    someone please explain :P

  5. i’m thinking it might be something like getting the reflection in a ball bearing then taking a picture of it… not so sure

  6. I like the second one, because dude’s head looks HUUGE. xD

And the one with the power lines is cool, and the picture of New York is cool.

  7. i am just curious as to how the camera is suported. it would have to be entirely from above or the supports would show in the picture. i wonder if it is with some sore of small remote controlled plane or what
in some pics the are things like trees or powerlines that may have posibly been used to support but the rest looks like its wide open sky in all directions.

  8. Photoshop isn’t required with these. The camera stitches the panoramic view together itself. The reason you can’t see the camera is because it takes a picture of everything around it. Imagine a watchtower that you can see out of on all 4 sides, then scale it down to a camera on a tripod that can take a picture of everything you see out of the watchtower.

For the ones with only water around it, maybe the non-mini planet part is actually ground, or the camera was suspended on the bottom of a plane.

    These are cool.

  9. These look amasing. Whoever did these did very well. It looks to me as an almost identical theme as the bulb screensaver from a while ago, but maybe thats just me.

  10. I’m liking the one with the boat.
Also if you look on number 022, you can see what I think is the photographer’s shadow. Very very goood!

  11. I understand it uses a special lens or whatever, but I can’t find where it was stitched together. It’s seamless. How?

  12. I’ve yet to look at the site about the camera but the idea of it reminds me of those cameras they use on CSI (on t.v). You just put on on a tripod and then press a button and the camera moves round and creates/stores a virtual room. To purpose is obviously to take it back to the lab and they can recreate the scene on their computers but obviously the camera moves 360 so it’s seamless. I’ll go check the website posted earlier now – no doubt i’ve got it completely wrong.

  13. I love the one with the big circle of people- it looks really nice. And the reversed one is cool too.

But its hard to imagine trees that big on a planet that small. The whole thing must be nothing but roots… hehehe

  14. Very amazing and beautiful. Reminiscent of playing one of the Ratchet and Clanks. Seba719 took the words out of my mouth, Coruscant is what i thought of too. The clouds are also awesome.

  15. The special camera used in this kind of illusion is actually used also in outer space exploring. They used 360 degree camera to capture Mars’ landscape around the exploring robot sent there.

  16. they arn’t done in photoshop you take the camera and you take multiple shots of everything around you then on the computer it will automaticly stitch them together without a seem to mess it up. then they go into a planit form with another program that comes with it. my cousin has one

  17. NO, it is NOT photoshop. It is a specialty camera. These are the 2d images to show what the scene is of. The actual pictures the camera takes are 3d, and designed for use in 3d tours, such as the kind Quicktime uses. I have viewed some of these pictures from the “inside” (that is, the location where the camera was sitting), and it is really stunning! A full 3d image of the location. Yes you have to look up to see the tops of the buildings, etc. Really cool!

  18. if its a camera that must be the difficult way out; i have a filter for photoshop that does the same effect.

  19. Whoa, it looks like you took an insane wide angle lens and stood way above ground somehow, and took the pics, really sweet

  20. These are awesome. I like the night city landscape, the boat in the ocean and the basketball court, gives good symmetry.

  21. taij mahall or however u spell it! it looks scary..i like the night litght city thing that looks like new york[which im from and love] or las vegas. i wonder how it captures the whole thing like the city and how do you get it from the ariel view and get the others from the far in that kind of view?? i dunno but i reall wanna kno. All i kno is that this is just plane amazing!

  22. oh yeah that last one looks like the perfect example of fall time! beautiful! but you can tell that that one is fake but its still pretty cool!
