Janek’s Nuts Illusion

This kind of optical illusions I like the most! It makes me really happy when I manage to motivate my visitors with my articles, for them to try and create their own illusions. As you see Janek created these impossible nuts, and there was no digital manipulation on this photo! If you saw our previous video illusion, you’ll understand how he managed to put this together. Here is what Janek wrote me: “Hi! Yesterday I doubled an illusion from the “Impossible Crate Box Video Illusion“, which really impressed me :) Photo attached, I hope you like it.” Impossible object illusions are awesome, do you agree? Can you solve Janek’s illusion?

Indeed I have. Also, those of you who missed it, “Optical Illusion of the day” Facebook application went live yesterday evening. Did you manage to add it to your profile? Did the application refresh itself? Has the new optical illusion showed up yet? What’s your experience with it? Will you take few minutes to share it with your friends? All this interests me very much. Please comment :)

  1. i like illusions like this that mess with your mind. I know how they do it, but it still puzzles me even so.
    sabrina ;-P

  2. I haven’t seen any videos that show how this type of thing is done, but I think that’s probably just a piece of paper with two holes in it, shaded to look three-dimensional.

  3. It’s not so simple as a piece of paper shaded… it’s a real 3D construction, but from the poit of view of the photo our brain read the geometry differently than how it really is.

The solution it’s in the same video of the impossible wooden box previusly posted.

  4. I dont see the illusion, he has a pen running through two screw-models. It looks right, I see how someone may see it been ‘impossible’ but it didnt work for me. I can explain that just by looking at it

  5. haha it stumped me the first time i looked at it but then when you look closly its just flat paper made to look 3D. you can also tell that by how the lines where the edges are just seem too drawn…i mean they just stick out too much to me but yeah…

  6. The facebook api works great! Thanks so much. I hope it gets some of my friends to visit your side. ALWAYS GREAT ILLUSIONS! =)

  7. I concur with the wandering goat.

The paper is flat and shaded.

You can see the inner wall of the nuts looks just a bit off.

You can also see just th slightest flex in the paper where the two meet.

  8. “I dont see the illusion, he has a pen running through two screw-models.”

The way the screw-models are set up, it looks like the pen has to bend in order to go through both of them.

And… was a picture of his face necessary for the illusion?

  9. i think there are 2 illusions here.the pen through the nuts and his eye-they follow you when you walk around try it out!

  10. I don’t understand whats so hard about this O.o. One bolt is put on then the other bolt is put on and just lifted onto the other bolt. I can’t explain well but it looks easy enough to recreate. I shall try this…. Anybody know where I can get giant bolts?

  11. Would be nice to see the video and at the end the guy will show us a curved pen. A false/tricky illusion, I’d say…
