Garage Door Face Illusion

I realize I might have given insufficient explanation in our previous article, as I thought it was more than obvious the illusion was animated .gif file. Moreover it was required for it to loop between two frames, in order to work properly. If you haven’t fully understood the way it works, be sure to read some of the comments other visitors left, explaining it in more details.

I understand how my English can sometimes sound crippled, specially in situations that require in-depth explaining. So I apologize once again, but also thank you for all of the warm feedback regarding my diploma!

Btw, to show you how important all of your suggestions and bug reports are, I’ve fixed the mobile theme’s width (be sure to check this site on your smartphones and report your experience). I’ve also included the “Next Random Illusion” button at the footer of each article in our mobile version :) …oh, and for today’s post – I just hope it doesn’t need any additional explanation (hint). This beautiful photo is courtesy of Noor Abdul-Sahib.

  1. Ah, nice negative image of the type, once you see it, you can’t see it any other way.

Typically I preview the image from my Yahoo home page. The past few weeks, sometimes when the preview window opens, the image is not there, and sometimes it is there (a day’s image never switches, just some days the illusion image is present, some days not). I mention this today since today’s image does NOT appear in the preview window. Your site is ok, its just the preview window on the Yahoo that exhibits this.

Prior to several weeks ago when this started happening, there was never a problem.

Reading on a MacBook Pro 10.6.7 using Safari 5.0.5 today.

    1. I was not able to see until you mentioned negative space, now that is all I can see

  2. Cool. At first, I didn’t see anything except the shadow cast by the leaves in a tree, that is, until I saw the title of the illusion. After that, it was in my face, so to say.

  3. It took a few seconds to spot it but it is more realistic than the other garage door face you posted.

  4. Yup. A cool optical illusion. Really subtle, but I did get it when I took a second glance.

I tested this site on my phone, it works pretty well. Using Android 2.2, with HVGA screen resolution.

  5. So, im such a blonde!!! Im looking at the image 4-ever, it seems thinking the actual “face of the door” is fake or something!!! Then all of a sudden it jumped out at me….pretty cool, it looks so life like

  6. I think your explanation of the lighthouse illusion was adequate enough. Some people just have a quick look and form an opinion without thinking.

For today’s illusion, is that a real shadow of a tree creating a face, or is this a doctored photograph?

  7. For those of you that cant see it, it’s not the shadow, but where the shadow is not. (on the garage door)

I never read the caption first, so it was real spooky the way the face just jumped out at me.

      ME TOO!!!!! ;)

  8. cool. Not to sound stupid, but is it a real shadow that looks like a face…. or a face that someone photo-shopped to look like a shadow?

  9. I live it, Vurdlak! Illusions like this always cofuse me, but then I see it and it honestly scared me. I got addicted to your site a year ago, and I was obsessed with illusions. I had just discovered gadgets for my Windows 7 laptop and I saw optical illusion of the day! I downloaded it, and well, yeah!:)

  10. Can anyone else see 2 faces in here?
If you cover the “mouth” of the big illusion with your hand, then look again, there’s a second face there!

  11. That is pretty cool. And I like your site very much. The only problem I have is somedays the next random illusion button doesn’t seem to work , or maybe the picture is stuck . Anyway the picture doesn’t change when I push the button. So somedays I can only view that days illusion. Other than that it’s great!

    1. Excellent eye!! I see the partial side face..complete with slim white collar. Thanks for sharing your comments.

  12. I can say that the description you gave in the Lighthouse Illusion was good enough, though, probably some who didn’t understand it in their first attempt didn’t bother to go though it again.
And yes, if this is an unedited photo, extraordinary. else, good editing!

  13. Greetings~

Today was my first journey to your website. This garage door image had me staring for nearly a minute before the Image ever so suddenly came into full focus! Amazing picture~especially if it was not doctored or photo shopped in any way.

Image resembles Ray Liotta in his younger years~ I can hardly wait to see what other wonders your site has to experience. Thank you for making such a virtual place available for sharing~

  14. THIS PIC LOOKS JUST LIKE A FRIEND OF MINES DAD WHEN HE WAS 19.She has put his pic up also, you can find it on my page.

  15. Its photoshopped. Notice that to the end of the white wall, the shadow suddenly stops even though the leaf does not have a complete shadow.
