Door Opening Optical Illusion

What you see below is a great find by Neatorama blog. It looks as if there are doors in a concrete wall, but actually – there aren’t any. The doors are in fact a flat mirror designed by Sarah Dayo that creates the optical illusion of wall opening. The only problem with today’s post, is that once you spot the illusion there is no going back. Sarah writes:

Sometimes we cannot help but to try and catch a glimpse of the other side. Passing through the everyday spaces we inhibit, the door half opened always stirs up a sense of seduction and curiosity within us. Inspired by these ordinary yet inexplicable moments in our daily lives, I designed a mirror that gives an illusion of a door opening on any given surface.

  1. that was awsome until i read your discription then i was able to see it from another point of view. first comment Yahoo.

  2. I looked at it for about ten seconds then seen the answer. btw ii’m not stupid, i looked at it without reading the description.

  3. I can see the shadow of the mirror against the wall. It was not readily apparent. At first it does look much like a door opening but where the angle point should be there is no line or any change in brightness where the lighting should be due to the differential in the angle of the surfaces. Nonetheless it is an amazingly realistic illusion.

  4. Nice. The thing that made me suspicious straight away was there is no crack on the right hand side of the door. If that got added, it would be a lot more convincing.
The othe problem with these sorts of art works is keeping them clean, any dirt spoils the illusion. I’ve seen similar tricks used to make small gardens bigger.

  5. I agree with Melinda, it be very cool to be able to pop it anywhere and make it seem there is a door there. Mind you one can just cut a mirror oneself. Great illusion!

  6. “The only problem with today’s post, is that once you spot the illusion there is no going back.” Why tell us it’s a mirror in the description then?

    1. Well, some people might not be able to see it.I’m not saying they’re stupid, just that they may not notice the little details giving it away. There’s nothing wrong with that.

  7. i thought it was a slab of concrete with a door-y shape in it…then i saw the shadow on the edge of the mirror

  8. Good Illusion :)

But I disagree about no going back.

If I focus on seeing the weird shaped mirror, its shadow etc then I see that- but equally if I consentrate on the ‘door’ i can still percieve the illusion just fine.

  9. I love this illusion, but I was wondering where we would go to send in a good optical illusion. It’s actually a video but it has a lot of illusions I haven’t seen on here before.

  10. I absolutely don’t see what the big deal is. and it feels like being left out of a good joke.
There’s just a kid standing at a concrete wall with a door ajar. What should I be seeing?

  11. I thought that the concrete actually had a hole in it at a slight slant creating the effect of a door.. but once i read its a mirror.. whoa.blew my mind.

  12. At first, I thought there is a door.
At second, I thought it was paint. I can still see the door
But now, I know it is a mirror! I can’t see the door anymore!
