Dave Barlow created this Escher model of Ascending and Descending from plaster blocks. It is amazing replica of impossible world, where the steps on top of the castle seem to go up and up infinately. In some way, this can be undestood as punishment Sisyphus bared.

woah…. cool! by the way i love ur site i have the widget and its so cool
It’s a photography trick using the angle of perspcetive to complete the illusion. Looking at the back flight of stairs, you will notice that it is only one flight, while all the others are four or five. and the grid shows that everything is ‘square’. Just made the stairs, with a slight gap on the back, and positioned it so that it appears that the back and side (west) corners are actually joined, when in fact, they are not.
If the camera had moved just the slightest, it would ruin the look as it would show the gap.
You can’t fool me, that isn’t a model, it’s an actual building! Nah, I’m just kidding, there have been lot of those lately. But seriously, excellent model.

Well done! He and Andrew Lipson should compare notes.
I thought building a thing like that was impossible – how did he do it??

It’s based off an Escher sketch (or is it etch-a-sketch)
