Daryl Toops sent in another creation: “Another one of my ideas, based on MC Escher’s work. I always wondered why he never made his famous endless staircase (Ascending) in a circular shape. After I spent months on the design, making it look right, I now know why… Enjoy!”

because it’s not an illusion? … pretty weak .. it’s a 10 minute drawing done in illustrator
“the illusion of the day” might be the illusion you were creating an illusion… of course m.c. escher never made it circular, because it´s not looking good!
On this site the word “illusion” take on a broader meaning than is usually assumed: it covers anything that puzzles or startles the eye, even a merely bizarre or in some way highly exceptional trompe l’oeil.
The endless staircase not only accomplishes that, it is a dusturbing metaphor, somewhat along the lines of the Myth of Sisyphus. (In the latter, the climber endlessly pushes a rock that never stays at the top; in the current illustration, the invitation (curse?) is to walk around in a circle of steps that never reaches the top.
Once in a while, on these comments, it would be interesting to see the “author” defend his own “illusion.”
In any case, peccadillo inclined scientists and mathematicians with virtually no imagination or willingness to suspend disbelief should go find their own dull mise en scène.
Sometimes, it is hard to defend your work. Was it Plato or Gilligan that said that it is impossible to please everyone. Creation is hard, opinions are easy. While I think this design is a valid illusion, some of the asinine comments above prove that not everyone sees things the same way. Some of us have the talent to create, damm the critics, while some of us just “Bob” along in the morass of “Lotus” land.
compair that illustration to the others whats the one thing that illustration has that is different about pretty much every other illustration in this section?
that object can physically exist.
Call me talentless call me a no-body but you sir must realize metaphor or no that’s not an illusion, merely an object.
geez people, would it kill you to be a little supportive? i think its really cool. just because it can be done in realy life doesnt mean that its not and illusion. besides, all of you who are saying it sucks, have you ever even TRIED to make an illusion? do you know how hard it is? i didnt think so
How is it NOT an illusion? If you follow the stairs with your eyes, it looks like it is going up, but then you end up in the same place. It tricks you. Therefore, it IS an illusion. Just because you know how it works and how you can esely make it, does not meen it is not an illusion.
I do not understand why so much discussion about this, in the basic definition of illusion we have that: “an illusion is an erroneous perception of reality”.
Dear friends, what you are watching is a circular stairway that APPEARS to take you up or down, but, you end on the same place where you started, therefore, its an illussion, its cool and its great its included, its also mising details, like perspective, shadow, colors that will help tricking the eye, but definately, its an illusion.
I know nobody needs my approval or my opinion, but I have to say that If you liked it or not, is not important to what this graphic is.
So is a ‘Mobius Strip’ considered to be an illusion? It looks impossible and certainly has some strange properties but it can be easily made…
Escher had a particular facination for them and he created well known picture of the Mobius strip with the ants walking around it.
Just because this circular ‘illusion’ can be constructed doesn’t mean that it isn’t interesting to look at – if anybody can be bothered to draw one with the correct colours, angles and light shading then go ahead and do it!!! – Don’t just complain about what someone else took the time to create…
analise anything enough and it dissappears the word may be real but our perception of it is an illusion there are some visions that can only be convey through illustration or visual art

It can actually be made with blocks, dominos, etc.
So you step up a step then walk downhill to get to the next one…
There is no shadow work or structure that would deceive the eye into thinking otherwise
Defenitely NOT an Illusion…
it’s cool cause it’s like, a metaphor for life.
ZZZzzz…
“the illusion of the day” might be the illusion you were creating an illusion…
of course m.c. escher never made it circular, because it´s not looking good!
Tsk,tsk…so negative. I think it’s cool.
i think its cool too. some people just dont respect illusions :D
Not the most…amazing illusion. but I agree with tara lynn it is kind of a metaphor for life.

i have tried… it is hard. some people just have to see it in the illusionists perspective. :D i think its cool too :D
Its not the koolest thing I’ve ever seen but i agree, its not easy to make allusions! I’ve tried!
