This has to be one of the coolest illusions ever! To my knowledge, John Sadowski is the original creator of this type of illusions. This is how it works: just stare at the dot for 30 seconds. This is animated gif file, that keeps repeating infinately. After about 20 seconds, grey scaled image of spanish castle will appear, but as your eyes adapt to the inverted image you were seeing first, you will see black&white image change to COLOR! Amazing! You can make an illusion just like that really quickly – just get a photo on the computer, make two copies – one with the colours inverted (just open the photo in MS Paint and press Control + I), and one in black and white. Stare at the inverted one, and then the black and white one should be in colour.

Ok dude, FIRST OFF. If you have the image on your screen and just look around and then look at it you can see the image changing. You don’t have to look directly at it to see it change. SECOND, your eyes don’t adjust with the flick of a switch. It would be gradual. Not all at once, like this picture is suggesting. and THIRD. If you keep looking at it, the picture reverts back to the first ‘inverted’ image, even if you are still staring at it. Your eyes should have still been adjusted.

ok ppl… just to clear things up, it is an illusion. let me explain it… first there is an inverted-color image. then it changes to a black-and-white image. if u stare at the black dot, however, you see a real color image. after it is black-and-white for a few seconds, the video goes back to the beginning– inverted colors. if u don’t believe me, cover up the black dot on the inverted pic w/ ur hand. when it changes to the photo, take ur hand away & u will see that it is really black & white. the illusion is supposed to be that you see the pic in real colors. hope this helps.

To put the final nail in the coffin (hopefully)of this argument: It is only an inverted and a B/W. I took my video camera, and recorded it. I then FF to the point where the image changes, and rewound it frame by frame, until the inverted came up. There is no Colour Image, each frame is inverted, and immediately turns B/W.
The camera’s CCD (see wikipedia if you don’t know) doesn’t work like the human brain and eye, and it does not get ‘tired’ of a colour and produce false colours like our eyes. It will always see whatever is shown. That’s why cameras don’t work when recording TV screens, they see the refresh bars going up quickly, and don’t have a latent image like our eyes. If you don’t believe me, try it yourself. A Film video camera would be best, but a digital camera (a good one) will work just fine.

But if your looking at the black dot when it’s multicolored, when the black and white image comes on, it will appear in color. But if you don’t look at the black dot when it’s multi colored and it changes, it stays black and white.

Ok, the problem is that most of you don’t understand this illusion. Yes, it does swap between two different pics, one being inverted and the other being black and white. That’s not the point. you’re supposed to stare at the inverted pic, and when it swaps to the black and white pic, at first it will look as if it were faintly colored. This effect goes away after you move your eyes. Most people don’t see the effect because you have to focus solely on the middle of the pic, and they have to know exactly what happens.

It actually works! if you keep staring at black dot it will stay colour until you lose concentration. If you don’t look at the black dot at all it will stay black and white.
If you still think that it is really an illusion, try this. Put ur hand on the picture so u can only see a small conner. Thats mean no black dot, no castle, just a small brown conner. This way the illusion shouldn’t happen. But wait for 20 or 30 sec, the brown become black—>the picture just simply be replaced by another one.

The point is that after staring at the dot for 20seconds on the first image the rods and cons of your eye become sensitized to the colors, when you look at the black and white image it then will appear to be in color due to the sensitization. Your eyes will restore to normal after a few seconds.

The “changing” of the picture is not the illusion here. The color negative is not the “trick.”
if you stare at the dot, like the instructions tell you to… the B&W image appears to be in FULL color (not color negative).
If you can’t follow directions, I guess you won’t get it… and resort to calling it fake.

TIP! after pic changes to black and white, KEEP staring at the center, DONT look away from center and picture will appear to u as if its full color. as soon as you look away from the dot in center it will turn back to black and white.
if you can manage to have enough mind control to keep staring at the dot without budging your eyes anywhere else, the black and white pic will appear to be in color for surprisingly long time, depends how long you hold ur eyes still…

READING is something what is needed to LEARN to do things RIGHT.
In other words, yes, there are two images switching between two. Black and white, and blue and orange picture (negative). The purpose is to stare at the black dot to see the illusion.
Here is how it works. Watch the animation for moment without concentrating on the dot. There appears only the two pictures I mentioned earlier. When there comes blue/orange picture again, stare at the dot. After 20 seconds when the picture changes to black and white picture, you see colored picture instead of that black and white.
So what happened? Your eyes produced image into your brain, memorizing it there. Keeping the focus causes the picture burn in your eyes. When the image changes to black and white, your eyes still see the colors from before, creating “after-image” which fades after moment.
This can be compared to another similar thing. If you stare at light for moment and shift your eyes away, you still see the shape of light in your eyes. That is the after-image from source of light.

Hate to correct you but it doesn’t work because of the color reversal. It works because your brain automatically fills in the color in your field of vision that isn’t in focus, your sub-conscious knows that castles are grayish-brown, that the sky is blue, and that the grass is green. If you focus continuously on the black dot you can make the color stay indefinitely.

Guys, it’s supposed to change to B-W automatically, the idea of this is: after the b-w picture is gone, stare at the black dot until the b-w picture appears again. At that moment you should see it with colors for a second or two
Just to clarify things for you guys: You see a colored image over the black and white one briefly because the negative colors displayed for thirty seconds are, in essence, the “opposite” of the ones that you would see if the image was in color. you see the correct colors briefly because the negative colors have been “burned out”. It is really to do with your cells and how they compensate when they are tired out there is a lot more to explain but thats the gist.

YES the gif flips between the inverted color and the black and white photo – but if you stare at the color image until it changes your eyes will colorize the black and white photo for you as long as you don’t refocus on the black and white image. Stare at the orange sky negative. When if flips to black and white you will a see color in the image; green grass, blue sky. Move your eyes or blink a few times to refocus and it’s black and white again.
