Accidental Financial Optical Illusion

Shiv Bansal submitted this unusual optical illusion. As you might have noticed, we are always trying to move the boundaries in this wonderfull world of visual phenomena – and this illusion is a perfect case. Here’s how Shiv explained it:

This work was in relation to my coursework as business school. I had to give a note this illusion in my paper. See the attached graph and answer the question…What is the value of MBS market (bottom green area) in 2005 – is it less than 5000, or greater than 5000?

Most people would say that it is less than 5000 – reality is that it is more than 5000 – it’s an accident – I made the graph, and was having hard time to find why was excel giving me a wrong graph. I was plotting a figure of greater than 5000 and it was showing me less than 5000 and then i took a scale to see the exact value – and it was all right – it was more than 5000!

  1. This marks a new low for this website. There have been some really dumb “illusions” on this site. This one’s description is flat out wrong. It’s clearly more than 5 thousand.

Oh, and I know you won’t clear this comment — that just furthers my dissapointment with this site. You might say I was dis “illusioned.”

    1. OK just because you want to be a jerk and complain about some little effect that doesn’t work for you doesn’t mean you have to critsize the integrety of the entire site, or bring the rest of us down eeither. Quite frankly, no one cares that you have insufficient brain capacity to either enjoy this interesting effect, or at least be polite to those who can. Thanks for being a jerk.

  2. Sorry that the popularity of this iste is bringing in more childish jerks of the interent.

Yeah the level of illusions isn’t alwas super grand but I think this one is quite nice and goes to show classicly whyy some graphs use two sides for some plot data ;)

  3. First, it ain’t much of an illusion. Second, I fear for your future in business. A simple set of horizontal lines – not taking a ruler to the printout, would confirm your chart. If you can’t read it clearly, and you’re the one who knows the data, how will your audience? And if you don’t know how to adjust your graph to do this, sign up for barber college.

  4. First off it was submitted by Shiv Bansal, not Vurdlak. Secondly at first glance it looks like it is less than 5000. And thirdly maybe you were reading it wrong or studied it a bit harder than most people because again, at first glance it appears to be less and not greater than.

  5. First, this was submitted by a fan of the site, Shiv Bansal, not Vurdlak. Second, at first glance it does appear that its less than 5000. And thirdly, maybe you just study things harder than the next person OR you’re just used to more complex illusions. But at any rate I was a bit fooled so I’m just saying.

  6. I think this is a good illusion. There are many illusions such as the ‘3 people on a line which ones the tallest’ one where to someone who hasnt seen a lot of illusions before really cant see they are the same, or in this case, different.

And for the record, i still cant see that its more than 5000

  7. I have good size relativity, I can see that it is bigger than 5000
Good illusion, considering some don’t even understand it

  8. Kurt said… It’s clearly more than 5 thousand.

Have you actually checked? its actually very very slightly over 5000 not “Cleary more than 5 thousand”

    Dumb jerk.

  9. its more but just slightly id say about 6000. copy and paste onto paint and then make a STRAIGHT line from the 5000 tho the end of the graph while holding shift ull see that its more

  10. this isnt an optical illusion. read the chart right and the answer is staring you in the face its more than 5000 duh!

  11. The real show here is that IT IS POSSIBLE to make the thinks looks different..even with the right data (think on all those gov reports)

  12. I zoomed in on my computer and it is definetly below 5000, i zoomed in to 400% and it was definetly below 5000!!

    1. I actually measured it and it is definitely less than 5000. So this one is busted. Great site, though!

    2. OK, I just re-read the description, and it says in 2005, not 2000 like I originally thought. In 2005, it is more than 5000, so I guess I’m busted. Still a great site.

  13. Kurt, it might do you good to read the description. You know, the part where they say “reality is that it is more than 5000.”

  14. To me it always looked greater than 5000, if I must be honest. But I suppose not every illusion works on ANY people. I’ve often been fooled by some that many people is able to discern easily.
