A shadow sculpture is an art piece that is not seen by viewing the actual materials that create the sculpture, but by viewing the shadows reflected from the sculpture. Some of the most famous artists in this realm are Tim Noble and Sue Webster, who we have featured on the site more than once, and Shigeo Fukuda.

But as advertisers always like to take the work of famous artists and repurpose it to promote their own products, it is not entirely surprising that this technique has since been incorporated into billboards. Of course, that’s not to say these ads aren’t artistic in themselves. After all, it takes a lot of thought and energy to design something that will be displayed outside, but only be visible at certain times of the day.

As a matter of fact, this particular New Castle billboard was created by another set of artists, Ellis Gallagher and Pablo Power. It is made up of more than 3000 bottle caps and can only be seen at night when the external light shows on it at exactly the right angle.

Believe it or not, this billboard is in my town and I still haven’t even had a chance to see it. I think it’s time I head out that way to enjoy the illusion in person.

In whichever form it gets recycled, the effect stands strong and it always gets best reviews. Just check out today’s real-life video of the original checkers illusion, shot in a professional studio.

Youtuber who goes under the name of brusspup noticed how this illusion has been around for a long time but always in the form of an image. His goal was to take it away from a flat piece of paper and turn it into a real, life-sized illusion that people could interact with. Obviously, brusspup has succeeded. He even included a scaled-down template for us to download and play with (file courtesy – brusspup).

Here’s how the author explained the effect and what he has done to achieve it:

The illusion works because of the “shadow” that falls on the checkerboard. Lets think of the square that the shadow falls on. Now picture that the shadow doesn’t exist: you would see a light colored square surrounded by the dark colored squares. But when the shadow falls on top of that light colored square, the shadow causes the shade to become darker but it also causes the surrounding darker squares to become darker. So within the shadow region the brightness and darkness of the squares are still relative to one another. But they are no longer relative to the squares that lie outside of the shadow.

So if you were able to pick up the middle square and move it to one of the outside dark squares, they would be 2 different shades, But the trick is ..that when you move the square you are moving it WITH the shadow still printed on the square. So now you’ve moved it out of its relative area, outside of the shadow region (but with the shadow still printed on the square) ..to the area where it’s the same shade as the “dark” square.

Perhaps you already encountered this photo before, as it became viral across the interwebs in the past few weeks. Can you explain why does the shadow of this volcano look like a triangle? The Mount Teide volcano itself does not have the strictly pyramidal shape like its geometric shadow might suggest. NASA explained it like this: “The triangle shadow phenomena is not unique to the Mt. Teide, though, and is commonly seen from the tops of other large mountains and volcanoes. A key reason for the strange dark shape is that the observer is looking down the long corridor of a sunset (or sunrise) shadow that extends to the horizon. Even if the huge volcano were a perfect cube and the resulting shadow were a long rectangular box, that box would appear to taper off at its top as its shadow extended far into the distance, just as parallel train tracks do.” Shot by Juan Carlos Casado and discovered by Jakub Kierzkowski who shared his discovery with us, the below spectacular photo shows Pico Viejo crater in the foreground which is located on Tenerife in the Canary Islands of Spain.

I’m planning to visit Paris (France) in few days, so before we continue with illusion stuff I’d definitely like to hear if there are some Parisians among us. I’ll be staying at the hotel in the proximity of Eiffel tower. What would you recommend as most important checkpoints to visit? Beside the mainstream attractions, I’d also love to hear about some less known (but still important) “insider” stuff. Somehow I feel most comfortable when I know the rules of the city I’m visiting, respecting the traditions, and above all – I try to appear as much “local” as possible. So what would be your tips?

Concerning the illusion, it was created by an artist called Chow Hon Lan. It depicts somewhat puzzling situation these two workers found themselves in. It is for you to decide if there are really two guys present, or is it merely an illusion?

Here’s an awesome one sent in by Joao Gratuliano. It took me really long time before I understood what happened here, supposedly there was no photoshopping involved. How come the hanging bars project a shadow on a background wall, while the hand doesn’t? Can it be that the author is a ghost, or vampire maybe? BTW, they say vampires have no mirror reflection, but what about their shadow? Now that I mentioned it, never thought about it really… Ok, let’s see who solves this one first!

Not to mention how nicely it would be if I temporarily re-designed our homepage and logo to reflect the snowy and Santa-Claus atmosphere…

I apologize for that, mostly because of my manners, but also lack of skills and additional staff… So here it is: Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!

Now let’s return to our topic. To see the genius of Belgian artist Fred Eerdekens, the lighting is very important. That’s because Eerdekens’ work relies on the shadows cast by sculptures — which are made of bent wires in this example — to unveil the hidden message to the viewer. Can you read all of the Eerdekens messages? What do they say?

Update 2: Unfortunately, original author asked us if we can remove his photo of the site, which we are obligated to do, so instead I’ve added this magnificent installation by Fred Eerdekens.

Lydia Roe found this peculiar photo of some band I never had the opportunity to learn of. The illusion is more fun orientated than being puzzling. Still, it turned out fine. What you see here is a singer and guitarist Laura Marling casting an unlikely shadow. Any clue how this happened? More similar fine illusions can be found via #shadow tag!

Just to show you how I’m giving my best to fulfill my promise, as well as keep the best audience in the world (you!) deservedly entertained! As I’ve opened my mailbox and few minutes have passed, an incoming submission appeared – from #Francis Tabary himself! I believe the illusion is self explanatory, but for those who don’t see it, Francis created such ambiguous letters, that when the light is cast upon them (from various angles), the projection it creates shows the very different meaning on each separate wall. No digital manipulation here, just pure art!

As Frank explained, together with #Shigeo Fukuda, Diet Wiegman is a true pioneer in this kind of art-form. If you remember, we had some interesting shadow installations by #Tim Nobel and #Sue Webster, but Diet has brought this onto the next level. What he did, he introduced mirrors and light reflections as a part of the installation. Check some of the photos in this post to see what I mean. Hope you like this as much as I did!

Then we have received Spinning Man version. Unfortunately that one didn’t gain as much attention, I hoped it would. Let’s see if spinning some cats helps. User called Pech Misfortune (oh, the irony) created this animated gif using ImageReady in addition with 3D Studio Max. The illusions is simple – all you have to do is see the cat rotate in both directions. At first you may think it’s impossible, but after some practice you’ll soon be able to switch the direction with each round. I’m also interested to hear your comments about the original direction you saw the cat spin at? When I first saw this, it appeared to move clockwise. Now each time I see it – it’s just the opposite (concentrate on it’s tale to switch).

It isn’t my preferred choice (not to have our self hosted video player), but what’s important is that you can still see the flick.

On the other hand, I have received this magnificent installation, one that greatly resembles Tim Nobel and Sue Webster’s optical illusion opus. Check the garbage formation. It doesn’t resemble to anything meaningful. But cast a light on it from certain point of projection, and the marvelous sailing ship magically appears.

Many shadow illusions can be seen if you follow the #shadow tag, but what’s more staggering (for me) is how you didn’t like the Trashy @ Sign Shadow. Perhaps because it was put aside to our new iPad App?

You might have heard how Facebook has plans to “seize control” of the complete web, and has already started making it more social by propagating the “Like” button everywhere. Even so, before I decide to test this nifty new feature on moillusions.com, first I’d like to wait and see how other webmasters deal with it. However, today I made some slight preparations, and changed the design a little. So when the time comes, we can implement new features more easily. Those with a keen eye will notice how the comment counter now stands below the title, while the revamped Facebook Share button took its position. Go ahead, try it! With just one click of a button you can now share your favorite illusions in your Facebook feed.

Duncan posted a comment in one of our previous posts, where he shared an interesting picture. Depending on your monitor luminance, you should have no problem reading the (partial) letters below. The message is straight and clear. However, look what happens if we adjust the output levels. How come it was easier reading the text when only half of the letters were shown? Think it has something to do with this study?

I think the former one should come in second. Anyway, do you know how the photographer made them screws levitate? It took me a second or two, but then I remembered we had something very similar posted month ago.
