As seen on Deceptology blog, company called Quaker Oats published an interesting advertising booklet way back in 1895. This vintage booklet contained 25 nursery rhymes, but more importantly there was a DIY optical illusion puzzle printed on its front cover. Might be interesting to know this item is now sold as vintage collectable (also known as “advertising ephemera”). But let’s jump straight to the point – How many packages can you count? Are there 6 or 7 or 14 packages present? What happens if you turn the puzzle upside-down? Anyone volunteers to explain? If you wish, you can also print it, cut a hole in the middle and put a pencil through it, making it interactive in real world. Who knows, maybe this little curiosity would represent a fun distraction for you and your school buddies. Anyway, when you solve this one – head next to somewhat more complex puzzles. One involves a mad scientist and his soccer team, and the other missing eggs and boulders!

If you ask yourself why I have decided to feature some “ordinary vintage photos” on an optical illusions blog, think again. Work below is just a fraction of Spanish artist Paco Pomet’s portfolio. If you inspect the photos more closely, you’ll soon realize they’re in fact stunning oil paintings that are “just” a reproductions of vintage photographs. Not only do the works use a monochromatic palette and photo real style (which in itself I find quite impressive!) — but each of Pomet’s paintings includes something out of the ordinary that isn’t always recognizable at first glance. His illusions transform the vintage photos into something quite unexpected. What he does, he changes real people and places into surreal landscapes and portraits by tweaking tiny details that go unnoticed at first. Some end up more illusory that others, and these few I have decided to showcase. How long does it take before you discover hidden oddities? For more of Pomet’s incredibly detailed, well-rendered works, check his official homepage.

Here’s a confusing puzzle, also known as Confuzzle, that can be made in minutes. Although this puzzle involves simple geometric principles, it is surprising and even baffling for some people. In short, it’s a quick and easy toy you can prepare yourself in minutes, that is tons of fun when assembled and understood.

Most of you will quickly connect this post with our famous Preposterous Puzzle, which goes hand in hand with the original Impossible Triangle. Also, be sure to check Instructables for tutorial on how to create this toy for yourselves. You can see this puzzle in action via embedded video below. Hope you like it!
Purchase It!

Some of you may remember, how few months ago we’ve posted a peculiar illusory toy, named Dice Mirror. After seeing such an amount of positive reactions, I decided to share another interesting puzzle which is also available to wider public. This one is called Preposterous Puzzle, and logic behind it, closely relies on optical illusion principles.

Our assignment is relatively simple: what we have to do, is rearrange the wooden blocks, but in such way that one extra slot is retrieved, where additional wooden square can be placed. Sounds somewhat impossible, ayeh? Well, contrary to our belief, the answer exists. I kid you not!

You can get the scoop of what I’m talking about via images included, but the problem can be understood better, if you check one of our previous illusions called Missing Piece.

Let’s repeat the core: At first glance you see a square completely filled with wooden pieces. Then you’re asked to insert a smaller square into the middle without removing any pieces. Obviously there is just not enough space. Apparently no-one told the makers of this puzzle that it’s inherently flawed and unsolvable. But is it? The Preposterous Puzzle can be solved indeed, however refuse to open your mind, and it will silently taunt you forever. Using our cumulative optical illusion experience (check this one), I believe we can solve the puzzle in no-time. If you like this optical illusion toy, it’s available for purchase in our partner store!

To be sincere, I played this for half an hour, but then I got stuck with some colorful cubes. You’ll know what I’m talking about when you get your hands dirty. I can give you some tips, but wouldn’t want to ruin this puzzle for others. So the only thing I’m gonna say, is look behind the suitcase and don’t overlook the corners ;) Hope we can solve this one together using our combined powers! If you show some interest towards these kind of posts, I’ll make sure to bring more in the future!

I’m not particularly inspired today, thus you shall receive this short question and a belonging optical illusion that goes in companionship with it. I can guarantee you that the picture below wasn’t manipulated with, and that the object you see can truly exist in real life. Only question that jumps out, is how? It may take you some time before you understand the logic behind this “impossible” wooden object, but after seeing all of our previous examples you should be an expert by now in solving something like this. Does it have something to do with special materials? Or is the secret in angle under which the photo has been shot? This is for me to know, and for you to find out ;)

I found this image in my optical illusions folder today, and wondered why I never got the time to publish it. Look at the picture on your left. What do you see? There must be something strange going on here. No way that the arch shown here has the proper top. Or can it? I’ve also included a solution inside this post. You’ll have to click the expandable box to see it. I wouldn’t want to ruin your solving experience before you’re ready to see the answer. Anyway, by looking at the solution everything becomes clear. Why has our brain presumed the column is aligned differently than it actually is? I really can’t tell, but hope some of you will try and explain this through comments.

Yesterday I tipped you about new Facebook vanity URLs. Have you had the time to check them? Hope you managed to grab something short and unique to represent you, like I did. But it seems not many of you actually read what I post. Probably you check only the illusions, which is also fine. But I’m REALLY curious what names were taken by our audience. Would be very nice to see more and more of you using your facebook logins to post comments. Not only does this automatically shows your image next to your comment, but additionally you have an option to share your comment so it appears in your Facebook feed. This way you can help us reach more people (your friends will see that you left a comment on our site, if you approve it). What is your opinion on this?
