As always, Francis Tabary keeps on amazing us with his creative works of art. This time he came up with such a clever ambigram, one that works in a way I never thought would be possible! What Francis managed to pull off, he designed an object of such formation that when mirrored horizontally forms a readable word, and when you further vertically-mirror this whole word, you get to see a whole new meaning. As simple as the resulting photo appears, think how hard it must have been forming two words just by writing upper half of the first one? Like we said, half of the word ONDE is reflected in a horizontally-positioned mirror, which makes the entire word. ONDE is then reflected in a vertical mirror, resulting with ECHO ambigram. Now if I only knew French…

The master Yoda when it comes to illusions, more precisely mr. Francis Tabary once again sent some some of his marvelous ambigram creations! The Illusions en Miroir, one you’re about to see, shows how “easy” appears to read both orientations of the same writing differently. When it comes to ambigrams, the pioneers in this field are Scott Kim and Douglas Hofstadter, but you may find many other authors if you look well enough. As Tabary states, ambigrams can effectively be used in advertising, and when designed as sculptures, they add to the element of magic and ambivalence.

Here’s one that kept me occupied for days: browsing the net for more stuff, I stumbled upon a peculiar item that kept my attention. This particular die changes its colors somehow, and the mirror that goes with it, doesn’t show what it logically should. I tried, and I tried, but I still can’t seem to understand how the darn thing operates!

You can get the scoop of what I’m talking about via images I’ve included, but the real thing can be seen through the video posted below (inside this article). Tried that? Still no luck? Think it would be easier for me to throw in few bucks, and get my hands on it.

Looking at the video below, do you think you can solve the secret? If you can, please be kind and wait some time before you reveal the answer to others (me included).

Let’s repeat the core: it’s a simple idea really, just place an ordinary die on top of a mirror. In real life, the die has black and red spots like any good die should, but in the reflection it has no spots. When you turn the die, and move it around – still no spots. It’s the damnedest thing and supposedly the effect works with no effort on your part. What’s more, when you flip the dice over – suddenly it has no spots in real life, but spots in the mirror-world appear. Crazy I know, but really amazing. Can we determine exactly how the mirror achieves this unusual effect? If you’d like, you can purchase this illusory toy from our partner store!

As he said in his own words, Emil is a great admirer of our posts. Passing by a store nearby where he lives, Emil noticed an interesting illusion and decided to take a picture of it, so he can share it with us. It took some time before I understood where the illusion hides, but I confirm it’s a good one. How many shelves do you see in this presentation rack? Would you consider both of us crazy, if we stated there are only 3 shelves present in this photo below? Yeah, that’s right! Before you read Emil’s explanation, try and spot the illusion yourselves. There are few more additional shots after the break.

The secret is that the end of the presentation rack has 2 mirrors, both placed at 45 degrees towards the street. These mirrors give the impression that the rack continues sideways. In reality, there is only one rack and two mirrors” – Emil

Hey people! We had some issues with our RSS feed last few days, that prevented the feed from updating with newest articles, thus resulting in your widgets not showing the latest illusion. Hopefully Feedburner fixed it, and we should be operating in full capacity again. If you encounter something fishy, be sure to drop us a line. In the mean time check this ad for a Russian Vodka. Can you read what is says? Is it Cyrillic? Explanation after the jump…

Advertising company that goes under the name of “Lowe Bull” (South Africa), produced an interesting advertisement for this Russian Vodka, and placed it on the walls facing bathroom mirrors in pubs and clubs. If you look directly to the poster, you’ll probably only see some mumbo-jumbo in Cyrillic Alphabet. Right after you give up, use the toilet, and are just about to wash your hands or face, you look at the mirror in front you.

Everything is clear now, and you haven’t got a slightest problem reading the poster. It says: “Men Don’t Drink and Drive“. How could you missed it the first time, you ask yourself? Was it because you were so drunk, and only after washing your face it got you sober enough to read it? Probably it hits you then. You finally understand how they fooled you, and that everything was just a mind trick and an illusion. Never the less, the message got through to you, and you’ll surely remember this ad.

I have to give props to the person responsible for this creative advertising idea. Like I always repeat myself, optical illusions in adverting are guaranteed way to get some exposure for your message. Be sure to remember this if you work for a media company.

Boy, this was probably the longest post I wrote this years. Feels good to see so much of the new content, doesn’t it? You can see a zoomed mirror photo of previous Russian ad, below.

Before we start, I have a question for you: how many of you use Facebook? Probably many of you… Well, did you know that you can get newest optical illusion from this site each day shown in your Facebook profile? Many of you added it, but some still don’t know about this. It’s simple go here and press “Add the application” button!

Cylindric mirror optical illusions are way fun, and something I regret not posting so often. Today I assembled collection of 5 cylindric mirror illusions you probably haven’t seen before. The optical illusions works when a cylinder mirror is placed at the correct center position of seemingly non-understandable and blurred image. If the cylinder has been placed correctly, you can see what the artist wanted you to see – Walt Disney maybe? This would be interesting to use among cyphers to code and encode hidden messages, don’t you agree? Today it is probably easy to create these kind of images with modern computers and image editing software, but back then it used great amount of talent to create something like this. The effect presented here is called Anamorphosis, or anamorphic cylinders illusion. Probably the author placed the cylinder first, and then started creating the flick just by looking at the cylinder. I believe this was the correct procedure. Am not sure though… Many more examples can be seen in Anamorphism category. I have underlined (linked) many related cylinder illusions in this text, so go ahead and check them out. Which one did you like the most?
