According to Greek legend, a single look at Medusa was enough to turn any man into stone. That’s why Perseus had to carry a magical mirrored shield with him in order to defeat this legendary monster -it was the only way he could look at the Gorgon to find her whereabouts without turning into stone.

Medusa’s evil was so complete that even after being beheaded, her severed head could be used as a weapon. After Perseus slayed the creature, he used the head to turn the man forcing his mother to marry him, into stone. Perseus then gave the token to Athena, who originally helped him with the powerful shield. Athena then placed the Medusa’s head on her shield, the Aegis, where it could then be used to take down even the most deadly of enemies!

Most artists fail to do justice to a creature as terrifying and hideous as Medusa. But let’s face it – it is not that easy to paint something powerful enough that would turn person into stone when he or she looks at your painting! Still, the clever minds behind Truly Design Visual Communication Studio found a clever way to pay tribute to Medusa.

While their painting may not actually turn people into stone, their decision to do the painting in an anamorphic style does make it difficult to actually view Medusa in her entirety. While you might not need Perseus’ shield to protect your eyes from the work, the effect does mimic the hero’s difficulty in only being able to look at his enemy from certain angles.

Paying tribute to the myth in this manner is probably a lot safer than actually painting something that could turn someone to stone. Plus, it ensures their viewers can live to tell others of the great work, which statues are notoriously bad at doing. On the other hand, artists can always state their creation actually works, and that it’s your fault you haven’t turned into stone because you obviously haven’t seen their Medusa from quite perfect angle ;D

The problem is, they often work really well – sometimes even too well to be precise! Then it comes to me to decide how should I handle this situation most precociously.

Even though I may endorse such optical illusions that ONLY imply NSFW content (while in reality being perfectly safe), I still wouldn’t want them showing inside your desktop widgets and gadgets, potentially bringing you in awkward situation of some sort. Thus, I have decided to place this simple, non-related socket illusion (above) to have something to fill your gadget with. Before you start complaining how these might lack taste, I can assure you the illusions they hold work really great! Hope you like what you’re about to see inside this article! Looking forward reading your comments.

With a little help from Jemish Dave, I stumbled across a unique technique that left me mesmerized. Ever seen something like this below? Quit reading this text and check the illusion attached. How long does it take you before you notice what it hides? After you checked the illusion out, you may PROCEED reading – don’t cheat!….. Has it surprised you? It may take some time for these things to load, and it also depends on type of connection and speed of your interface for the effect to happen seamlessly, though! If you want to know, these things are called cinemagraphs (little different than stereoscopic images we already showed). Creating a cinemagraph photo is not as simple as it may appear. Some of them took their authors entire day to make, but as you see the results are breathtaking. Cinemagraph is a technique of blending the effects of images and videos. Some of them can end up quite exciting, funny or extremely creative. It might take few seconds for them to fully load, so be patient and watch carefully!

If you follow internet photo trends, then you’ve probably already seen planking and owling in action. While those memes have no real place here, the newest photo trend, horsemanning, is a perfect match for an illusions blog.

Horsemanning is actually an example of everything old becoming new again. While the trend has been exploding across the net, it actually was a big fad in 1920′s photography. The process is pretty basic: arrange two people so one person’s head can’t be seen and the other person’s head is the only part of their body that can be seen. In the twenties, this was a popular way to imitate the headless horseman from The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.

The modern incarnation of the trend started when someone found the image below at a flea market and then uploaded it on to the net.

Being as how planking and owling both peaked in popularity shortly before this image came out, it’s not too surprising that the trend became huge immediately. It even has its own Facebook fanpage and homepage. What do you guys think of the fad, is it fun? Funny? Or just plain stupid?

Also, have you ever taken goofy illusion photos like this at home?

From the style and motive used in this painting, I presume it was created by famous Sandro Del Prete. It depicts a passageway in Ticino, southernmost canton of Switzerland, which by the way is the only canton where Italian is the sole official language.

I like this one because it’s plain simple, and doesn’t favor none of the two illusory motives it holds. That being said, can you easily switch between old man’s profile and two of the Ticino people? Usually these kind of illusions struggle to push intended (illusory) motive to the front, while the other one is then too much blended with the background, thus making it much harder to see. I find it masterful when both motives have the same weight instead of when artists try to force the illusion!

BTW, how many of you noticed that we surpassed the 100 MILLION VISITOR milestone? I believe we are one of the rare webs that still use the counter (see footer). I’m aware there is zero chance that 100 million different people saw our website, yet makes you wonder how popular we became since our beginning. Enjoy another fine illusion brought to you by Mighty Optical Illusions!

Must be the heat. I can’t function normally when there’s such a warm weather outside. Anyhow, I had this piece of art in my collection for ages, but I just couldn’t find out who the original author is. Anyone recognizes the masterpiece attached to this post?

Those that came here via our Optical Illusion of The Day widget, probably saw the face of a vampire first. But if you look more closely, you’ll quickly realize what we have here is a buttoned-up mistress sitting beside the window ledge.

If you like them #fantasy illusions, I suggest you head over to the Dragon Lady illusion we posted few months ago. I always thought they were well produced, yet never felt they really deserve their very own post on this site. Luckily, a solution came to my mind – why not have them both at the same time?! Something similar was tested 2 weeks ago, and your response wasn’t bad at all! The first one depicts two booby-licous gentlemen, while the other was created by our well known illusion master – G. Sarcone. Can you be sure how many ladies are there present in the second picture below?

I heard some advices how I should develop “Optical Illusion of The Day” app for iPhone/iPod Touch. Are you kidding me? We already did this :) It was our main news months ago. If you look a little bit closer (just below the header), you may even notice the “iphone app” link. Now that we concluded this little misunderstanding, let’s check today’s art installation:

This photograph came along with no accompanying description. I can’t tell you who the author is, nor when was this taken. But what I can tell you, is that the shown artwork greatly resembles Tim Noble and Sue Webster’s “Shadow Sculptures“. My next guess would be that the author behind them was Kumi Yamashita. If you have more info, be nice and share. Hope that this illusion wasn’t too scary – it’s just garbage on a stick, after all.

Laura Ours sent me this funny-looking photo she found, browsing rhythmic gymnastics on Yahoo! news. Where did the head got lost? This girl sure knows how to do gymnastics, but she obviously forgot to look after her body parts. Can we help her locate her missing piece? I can assure you there is no photoshop involved, and if you don’t believe me, check this similar example we had months ago. There was also a debate on Man’s Wrestling illusion article. Read them first, so we don’t get duplicate comments. I really love this kind of artistic photos. Do you? Thanks Laura for your great submission

Lee Wallender sent us this fascinating optical illusion vie email. The image is titled “Momentarily headless”. The gymnast Katherine Coronel of Venezuela performs her routine during the rhythmic gymnastics competition at the 20th Juegos Deportivos Centroamericanos y del Caribe in Cartagena, in Colombia. I would just like to inform you, that I received all of your submitted illusions, and will post them soon. It’s just that I’m still on my holly-days, and have limited access to internet. Some illusions that were submitted require downloading, browsing etc. which I will do when I get back home, since I’m on limited mobile phone internet right now. Be patient, all of them will be posted, so keep submitting them ;)
