Few days ago, Laura Bee sent me this photo by a Chinese artist called Xu Bing. Attached photo was taken on one of Xu’s classes titled: Square Calligraphy Classroom. The intention of this installation was to simulate a classroom-like setting, in a gallery or museum space. Desks are arranged with small containers of ink, brushes and a copybook with instructions on the basic principles of New English Calligraphy, a writing system invented and designed by the artist.

As people attempt to recognize and write these words, some of the thinking patterns that have been ingrained in them since they learned to read are challenged. It is the artists’ belief that people must have their routine thinking attacked in this way. While undergoing this process of estrangement and re-familiarization with one’s written language, the audience is reminded that the sensation of distance between other systems of language and one’s own is largely self-induced. That being said, if you look closely you’ll find the below characters not so hard to read…

A video titled ”Elementary Square-Word Calligraphy Instruction,” was played on a monitor during the exhibition, capturing the audience’s attention and inviting them to participate in the class. Once they were seated at the desks, the audience was instructed to take up their brushes and the lesson in New English Calligraphy begins.

As I have promised yesterday, new day – new optical illusion! Can you read this Chinese sign on your left? Sure you can! A little self-confidence and some flexing of the muscles in your neck, should do the trick. No additional hints further!

I took some time and added “Symbol” tag to some previous optical illusions that in their nature are similar to this one. If you follow the link, you may find few more “Chinese” illusions there. This should help you further identify the optical illusion used in this sample.

If you didn’t notice, the title of this post contains “Part II” – You guessed, there is Part I as well.

BTW I’ve heard some positive suggestions from you guys. For example: how I should disable the picture from showing its filename, or disable the tags below each post (sometimes they spoil the puzzle). As eager I may be to do that, I’m still not sure if this would be possible. Sure, its easy to remove the tags or simply name the image “xgzgf” or something, but all these tags are necessary for SEO (Google search engine). Seems I’ll have to find another way of masking those…

Look at the poster below. Subtlety is great, and it sure conveys the message. Another example can be found inside this article. Not so good place to get lost in the night is Tokyo. If I had no experience with optical illusions, I would consider this nothing more than plain gibberish. But since illusions are something I consider “my expertise“, immediately have I remembered my “Eye Examination Test” – which can be found inside optical illusion Tests. Tests category is section we mention rarely, really. Still, some of my favorite posts from early days can be found inside. Anywayz, back to the topic; if you have no clue how this image is even considered optical illusion, I recommend visiting some of the previous posts I mentioned in this text. Ok, did my duty, gave you newest illusion, and now I’m off to prepare for my Birthday – it’s tomorrow, and since its already 22h, this means 2 more hours and I’ll be 24! For old time followers, this I bet is something you didn’t know. Now if you are regular visitor, you may already know which country I live in, my age and my educational status :)
