Escher’s most famous works – Relativity. We’ve featured the piece recreated in LEGO, papercrafts, animated gifs, even in billboards, but this is undoubtedly the first time someone has been able to show us what the image looks like when shot through a drop of water!

Artist who goes under the nickname of “smsilton” captured this amazing image after about two hours of attempts. All in all, he said that it probably took him about 150 shots to get it right.

If you were wondering what kind of a set-up a person needs to actually achieve something like this, here’s this picture of his Escher-shooting studio. Smsilton used a 60mm macro lens at f/2.8. He shot the image at ISO 640 and 1/250. But figuring out the right settings for the job wasn’t even the hardest part:

The hardest part was focusing. In the set up picture you can see a piece of string above the eye dropper. I would let that hang down off the eye dropper and focus on that, then move it and squeeze the dropper and the shutter at almost the same time. I have like 30ish more pictures with the drop clearly in the shot but the sketch behind it isn’t in focus, this was the clearest one I got.”

Personally, I’d think the hardest part was being patient enough to shoot water drops for two hours just to get the one magical shot, but that’s why I’ve never had any interest in being a professional photographer.

Designer Marc Böttler used stacked wooden blocks and combined them with tricky camera angles to turn children’s playthings into a cool set of optical illusions. He calls it his Klotz Type Experiment. Because they only form letters when viewed from certain direction, it might be one of the first official anamorphic alphabets that could be used on a computer. I think it would be really cool if he were able to turn these into an official optical illusion font, even if the full 3D anamorphic effect can be seen in person only.

I’ve never been very good at wooden block architecture, so I never really made anything all that impressive with the toys when I was younger. They do seem like a good, albeit underutilized, medium for art projects. Have any of you ever made cool stuff with wooden blocks?

Flickr user mamassage knitted this cool anamorphic scarf that looks like it’s just another stripped scarf until you see it from the right angle -then it reveals a hidden alien pattern between the stripes. Even if you stare at it long enough without tilting it, you’ll eventually see the aliens, but I doubt you’d really notice while someone was wearing the scarf.

It’s a little like this striped Garfield picture Vurdlak posted back in April. A good knitter could even make a scarf from that, although Garfield would undoubtedly appeal to an entirely different crowd than the alien from this scarf.

Personally, I’d love to wear a something like this, knowing I was the only one who would know about the illusion for the most part. Would you guys wear this or at least one with a similar illusion knitted in?

P.S. Here’s another example that found it’s way through. Thank youTrevor for sending this in!

We’ve seen hundreds of ultra-realistic chalk drawings by now. Over the years artists have truly mastered their craft, pushing the boundaries and making their results more realistic by each iteration. In my opinion, today’s featured illusion has pushed the boundaries even further -by replacing the “chalk” part in “3D chalk drawings” with actual flora (and fauna). Observe how strong the 3D effect appears. It’s almost impossible to visualize the scenery as being what it actually is – flat. I think the original artist has started the whole new trend, and hopefully, we’ll be seeing whole bunch of similar illusions in the near future! The only thing I regret is missing the author’s name. I’ve tried using reverse image search which TinyEye provides (as suggested by my audience), yet without any sucess. If you have any clue about the origins of this photo, also where this installment can be found, please don’t hesitate to share it via comments section!

Update 07/06/2011 – Thanks to our dedicated fans we’ve managed to identify the author behind this monumental achievement. His name is François Abelanet and may find more photos here.

The lead artist behind this work is Tracy Lee Stum, who happens to hold a Guinness World Record for the largest chalk painting by a single individual (as opposed to the largest chalk drawing by a group, which is featured on Moillusions here). Yeah, she’s pretty impressively talented whether working with a group, like she did on this Mouse Trap project, or working alone, like she did on the record-winning Last Supper piece below.

The shading effect on the artwork is so realistic, I almost expect to see the balls clacking together. In fact, if you’re reading this Joshua, I think it would be amazing if you created a few similar drawings that could be put together into an animation of a moving Newton’s Cradle. The result would be eerily unreal. And rest assured, if you did decide to do that, I would eagerly put it up on the site as well.

I’m a big fan of Dali, but not because of his classic artworks that can be seen on dorm room posters in college campuses across America. No, what I admire about Salvador Dali was his ability to see things in an entirely different manner from those around him. All of his paintings reflect this brilliance, but none show just how fantastic his mind worked better than those that incorporate anamorphism.

Anamorphic art requires the viewer look at the piece from a specific viewpoint or using a special tool in order to actually see the artwork in its proper display form. By the end of his career, Dali was a master of this skill, creating paintings like the one above that required cylindrical mirrors to see the work in its true form, and by painting spectroscopic images that required 3D glasses to take in the full effect.

His most famous work of this type is the Mae West Room in his Theater Museum that was based on his famous painting, The Face Of Mae West. As you can see in the pictures below, the stage appears to be nothing more special than a lip-shaped sofa with a strange fire place and two paintings. When you step up to the viewing platform and look through the lens though, everything comes together into a bizarre portrait of the legendary actress.

Fortunately, I found one. As you may observe, the images start out scrambled and skewed, but as we often explained, when a cylinder mirror is placed in the right spot, the true artwork is revealed. The hidden motive magically appears in the reflection on the cylinder’s surface.

One of the most popular artists (building his career around this effect) is Istvan Orovitz. Check the #Orovitz tag, and you can see some of the works Istvan did in the past. Many of them we already showcased. I’m not particularly sure whether all of the examples in this video belong to Istvan, but the ones exhibited are worthy to see…

Suzanne Daly contacted me with an impressive collection of anamorphic drawings. Most of them we already had showcased on this site, but there were few interesting ones I’ve never encountered before. One of them I’ll feature today. Can you help me by recognizing the portrait reflecting on the metal cylinder? The interesting thing about such hidden portraits, if the author is professional enough, you can’t distinguish them just by looking at the original canvas. Only after placing the reflective object (metal cylinder in this case) at the proper spot, the hidden image occurs. Back in the old days this was very popular method to include forbidden motives, that normally wouldn’t be accepted. Expect more similar examples in days to come… off course, if you approve these as regular optical illusions.

When Dan and Brieuc both submitted this flick, I thought it’s a nice video, but doesn’t bring much new to our world of optical illusions. Then the next day came, and I started receiving the exact same submission (from more sources), over and over again. It really appears people who saw this would like to share their experience. So I decided in favor of presenting Brusspup’s Anamoprhic Candles video. There you have it. It’s not that bad when I think of it, it’s just not something I find that extraordinary.

BTW, as Brieuc properly pointed, this is kinda similar to chalk drawing illusions, except made with candles. For more anamorphic stuff, be sure to check the corresponding tags and categories – #Anamorphic and Anamorphosis category!

Got another great vid from a friend of mine yesterday. Even though you may think: “What is a magic trick doing on an optical illusions dedicated website”, you’ll quickly change your mind after the clip has ended.

But wait! There is more to it then you probably noticed at first. Be sure to replay the video couple of times, and each time concentrate on another background figure. Are the wooden mannequin, Rubik’s Cube, radio and whole bunch of other items lined as you originally presumed?

Even though magic tricks and optical illusions have whole lot in common, you’ll certainly agree that Chop Cups video has much more to do with illusions, than magicians and tricks. This has to be one of my favorite clips of all times. Btw, it gives me a great pleasure observing the “Top 10 Optical Illusions” chart in our sidebar.

In May 2009, Greg “The Grease” Lehman showed us a relatively new approach to 3D Anamorphic Artwork. His tactics involved similar moves some of them chalk artists use, but with use of a printer we managed to avoid the artistic factor, where normally we would have to get our hands “dirty” to actually paint the image. This time I found a creation done by one of his fans, where you can see the result is quite amazing. Apparently the Spalding we see is just a painting on the street, but when seen from certain angle looks impossibly real. In fact, it’s so realistic that I have my doubts on this one. Perhaps the user that submitted this, sent me the photo of a real ball (by mistake?) that the author used to guide him in his painting process. You be the judge!

I’m glad that my writer’s block lasted this short, and hopefully I’ll be swinging back in full rhythm now. Am not sure if you noticed, but I’ve added “Top 10 Optical Illusions” section at the bottom of my sidebar. Based on your ratings, only the best optical illusions will automatically appear there. There are some rules though – optical illusion need to have at least 5 votes before they can candidate themselves. I hope that in time, all of the posts will get much more votes than needed. Hopefully as time goes by, we will have credible leaderboard of top optical illusions. I’m very excited about this new feature. What else do you suggest? I’m closely listening to your suggestions, and currently the best one I heard is advice to create some kind of a form, where you could submit your articles, images, etc… so they are completely ready, just waiting for me to approve them. Will keep you informed about this…

Today’s gallery is called “Anamorphosis“, and was created by Luc d’Hanis & Sofie Lachaert. This technique is very well understood by our old visitors, but if you’re a newbie you may want to check the Anamorposis category first. In today’s example when porcelain platters meet reflective object, the distorted drawings of precious birds on the platter become perfectly reflected on the bottles or cups. The awareness of the birds’ potential extinction emerges only when objects are carefully aligned as a pair. The distorted drawings on the platters only reveal themselves when you place a reflective object in the middle of the platter. Hope you’ll enjoy these “minimalistic” optical illusion photos. Oh, by the way – don’t forget to vote after you check our archived illusions. We need as many votes possible, to bring some credibility to out “top illusions” leaderboard.
