What I love most about professor Kitaoka’s homegrown illusions, is their simplicity. Just look at the color-adapting sample he came up with all the way back in 2005. Even though the central square appears to be greenish, in reality it’s monochromatic. Meaning, the central square actually lacks color and its pattern is composed in gray-scale. [...]

Tomato Kosir and Wolfgang Gosch used the famous optical illusion by Akiyoshi Kitaoka , and combined it with Galileo Galilei’s saying “Eppur si muove” (and yet it does turn). The finished product was then used as a presentation poster for the 9th Festival of Slovenian Film. I believe most of you have already stumbled upon [...]

Duracell has always been creative when it comes to marketing their own products. Just check out the already featured examples filled under the belonging #Duracell tag. Their latest campaign (at least when it comes illusion related advertising), combines the relatively known rotating snakes pattern (invented by professor Akiyoshi Kitaoka) with the “endless” power Duracell’s batteries [...]

I’ve read couple of comments you left on our yesterday’s post, and it appears that if the left eye is enlarged in photoshop, some bluish dots can be seen, ones that aren’t present in the right eye. I believe this error appeared when I resized the image, and saved it in JPG format. Apart from [...]

This Japanese manga girl by professor Akiyoshi Kitaoka looks like she has one cyan eye and one gray eye. In fact, both eyes are exactly the same shade of gray. The proof can be seen right next to the original. The girl’s right eye appears the same as the turquoise hair clip, only because of [...]

Professor Akiyoshi Kitaoka from Japan, occasionally creates such awesome optical illusions, it’s hard to believe what he tells us is true. One such example were the running spirals, effect heavily used in examples I’ll show you today. Check out the 4 pictures below. Can you believe they’re static? They seem to rotate like crazy, but [...]

Rafael Simões Miranda does what he calls “Italian design through Brazilian eyes“. Chances are slim that the optical illusion pattern he used to create this interesting piece of furniture simply appeared in his dreams. This isn’t the kind of design one just conjures up. So either (a) he was aware of Akiyoshi Kitaoka’s original Snake [...]

In the beginning we had rollers and snakes, optical illusions born accidentally, probably as a by-product to some sort of color experiments. Most of them were invented by a Japanese professor, Akiyoshi Kitaoka. Since then, optical illusion societies have grown. Just look at our website, for example. Many enthusiasts began experimenting with existing material. While [...]
