David Cherry (whose Unreal Movement Triangles we already covered) created something we haven’t had the opportunity to see for quite some time now. His “animation” effect works flawlessly! In order for you to see the effect in its full glory, I was forced to edit David’s original attachment, yet it’s still available if you click on the picture and open it full size. Am I imagining things, or does the phantom cross really appear to continuously shrink?

  8. ZL123 says:

    I don’t see it shrink…?

  9. Adam Faguy says:

    Naw, I don’t see it.

  10. Rick says:

No it doesn’t shrink it’s just a trick of your mind, your eye’s playing tricks on you..but still kinda cool.

  11. Lol says:

I have a feeling you are seeing things :’) Lol nah waht i see id the triangles in each square getting closer but i dont see any movement with the actual cross.
    Maybeim just strange

  12. Ariel says:

  14. Ron says:

You know… I’m not seeing it. Not really.

Every once in awhile, it kinda-sorta looks like it’s shrinking… maybe. But sometimes, kinda-sorta, it also looks like it’s expanding. But the perceived movement, in my case, anyway, is very, very — as in VERY — slight.

    Maybe I’m an exception…

  15. Ron says:

Also… seriously… the picture links above need to not change when I click on “submit”. I wanted to look at the “sexiest Russian women” link when I finished my message, and now it’s gone. I’ve got a “strongest woman in Sweden” link instead, but, believe me, that isn’t the same… at all :)

Yes, this needs to be moderated… please don’t let it through, LOL. Still… something for _you_ to look into… I’m serious. If those links make you money, then, OK, I frequently click them if they’re interesting… like “sexy Russian women” :) But if they change when I submit a response, then I’m forced into either responding or following the link… surely that isn’t what you’re looking for either. Because, to be honest, if that’s my choice… I’m going to go look at “sexy Russian women” from now on :)

Peace. And, oh by the way — GREAT site, and thank you!

  16. Sergio says:

i think its just you… it doesnt do anything for me :\

  17. Honey says:

i like the bigger version more, it’s great though

  18. Johnny Jack Pompolla says:

it works better for me in the little version

  19. Budi Lin says:

    I don’t get it ??

  20. lily says:

it’s a very nice illusion.i am putting it on my desktop.

  21. lily says:

i would like to know WHY the cross appears to be shrinking.can anybody explain?

  22. don j says:

after trying the ‘shrinking cross’, i tried most of linked examples. less than 50% worked for me leading to the assumption that astimatism is not a friend of the viewer. i do enjoy the ‘magic eye’ series of ’3d’ images that came out in the early 90′s. thanks for the effort. p.s. please forgive all lower case; shoulder surgery has severely cramped my style.

  23. Tysss says:

I only see it if I move my eyes, and even then it doesn’t work very well compared to other illusions like this..

  24. cindi says:

yes, your imagining things. Looks the same to me.

  25. Muzic says:

to me it looks like it’s getting bigger instead

  26. Talis Pähn says:

To all the unbelievers: Try broadening your eyelenses (black parts of your eye)

  27. David Cherry says:

Hi everyone. It seems to be like my last effort. Some people see the ‘illusion’, some don’t. I can’t explain why this happens. I did not set out create an illusion, it just happened. I was just playing around with a fractal program (Ultafractal – yeah!) and saw the ‘movement’ when I made this pattern. At first I thought it might be just me, but some others seem to see it OK. I’ve reversed the pattern to see if the effect is reversed – does it work for you?crossout.jpg

  28. DetectiveKitty says:

i saw this instantly and it is amzing. simple yet so powerful.

  29. HAWK-EYE117 says:

ok to all that could see it, what the ….. heck am i supposed to do to see the illusion?

  30. Shahriarzadeh says:

I can’t see any movement at all

  31. zena says:

    really great!!!

  32. Jordan says:

It appears to be shrinking because you are focusing on the direction in which the points of the corners are facing… they’re all facing inward.

  33. Jan says:

well i don’t actually see it shrink.. but i guess it moves a little when i look away and stare at it again.

  34. Professor L. says:

I think that I have a theory. All of the ‘arrows’ point inwards, and we are trained to look in the direction of said ‘arrows’. So, simply, our eyes are always trying to follow ALL of the arrows, thus leading us to believe that the cross is infinitely shrinking. However, we all process information differently, so for those of you for whom this illusion did not work, your brain might be wired a little differently, so don’t feel strange because of this beguiling image. If anyone can prove me wrong, please reply and I will correct myself. How was that for a twelve-year-old?

  35. David says:

    I. DON’T. SEE. IT.

  36. Cheyanne says:

it shrunk at first but then it stopped. how weird!

  37. archomatic says:

holy JESUS the cross is sinking
