To share some background news, the story is I finally gave up (to all the pressure from my friends)  and started playing online poker. What I found out, is that there are literally thousands of websites giving bonuses for new players, and I had some practical experience with Party Poker. Anyone else has experience with them? Anyway, I feel somehow scared that once I start I won’t be able to stop. What is your self-control strategy? Not to bore you any more with my personal life, let us move on to our next spotlight illusion. The story behind this one is very simmilar to our previous “3 Impossible buildings for the Sunday evening” article, but this one clearly hasn’t been photoshopped. Can you locate its weak spot? After spotting the reason why it belongs to Impossible Objects, explain how was this done. Does it have something to do with photographer’s skills? Frankly, I don’t give a… khm, frankly I’m not exactly sure.

Let us revisit the Seemingly Bent category. We hadn’t had unique optical illusion that belongs to this section, in quite a while. To remind you once again, Seemingly Bent category consists of illusions that give you impression you are seeing slanted lines and shapes, while in fact they are perfectly straight (or mutually parallel). Most famous example to represent this category could be “Cafe Wall“, followed by both slanted square and slanted seesaw.

Now that we have repeated the matter, I can proceed explaining today’s two specimens. First one on the right is nothing new to be frank. It’s just a more recent version of “Circles or Spiral” illusion. You can open the image in full-size to see the full effect. In short: the image gives you impression you are seeing continuous spiral, while there are only 6 concentric (ones that share the same center) circles instead. The second image below is new work by Akiyoshi Kitaoka, and believe it or not – all of the lines in it (consisted of gray blocks) are placed perfectly horizontal. I’m not pretty sure why is that, and does the color combination help making the effect stronger.

Check out this funny looking mural below. It was exhibited in IUPUI’s campus, in the Honors lounge by Shea Strauss. Mural’s design is more than it appears at first glance. There are some words, subtly incorporated into the twisted lines. Are you able to see them? Take your time. Solution – after the jump…

Could you spot this yourself?

Could you spot this yourself?

As you see, the answer is not so easy to figure out. I was too completely stuck before I found this solution picture on your right. Author behind this intriguing mural is Shea, a designer, artist, student, and manatee enthusiast.

Yesterday, I took some time and fully redesigned the widgets page. This was on my schedule for months, but somehow I kept avoiding this (for ages). Hope you like how results turned out. Old time visitors will probably see this as less important update, but I hope that the new design will present you the widgets in better view, and show you how useful they can be. If you feel like it, I advise you to take a look – who knows, maybe you’ll find something intriguing as well! BTW, I have updated the Newsletter and iPhone App page as well!

If you are a dog lover, and have your own best friend like I do – reading about Frontline will surely ring a bell. Those of you who aren’t informed well enough, well basically its an anti-flea substance that keeps your dog safe from all kind of parasites. Perhaps cat owners use it to protect their pets as well, dunno. Explaining all of this was necessary before I introduce you with today’s optical illusion. As you see, Frontline painted this mega billboard on the floor of a major mall. This ad wouldn’t make much sense if there were no people to interact with it, but since their painting was placed on the floor of such a mass-trafficked location – the results make lot of sense. Hope you liked this one, I just had to share it with you (maybe just a poor excuse to link a photo of my dog within this text ;) Enjoy!

Oh, by the way – yesterday I managed to fix our Newsletter subscription form. Some of you emailed me over the previous weeks, asking how to subscribe to our daily newsletter (optical illusions directly sent to your mailbox each day). If you wish, now is the time to subscribe. Don’t forget to confirm your subscription in your mailbox after you have joined our mailing list! There is an envelope type of icon at the very top of our homepage.

Roger Deschner pointed me to something interesting. Its probably not the most significant discovery, but fun to spot anyway. This is what Roger writes: “This has suddenly become big. Turn the logo for the Chicago Bulls pro basketball team upside down, and it’s a robot sitting on a park bench reading a bible.” Why are they doing this? What do these robot overlords want from us? Please, America – rise up against the cybernetic oppressors before it’s too late! Before you log out, don’t forget to check some other logos through the “Logo” tag. You may be amazed how controversial some logos turn out to be :)

Update: it might be worth checking Party Poker website to pick up some bonuses I talked about earlier!

What the hell...?

What the hell...?

Posting each impossible object as a separate post was logical in the beginning. When I started this site, all of the impossible objects made a stand-alone unique experience for my audience. But over the time Mighty Optical Illusions website has built a database of over 10,000 optical illusions, hundreds of them representing some kind of impossible object in one way, or another. You probably realized by now, how it makes no sense posting each slight variation of Necker Cube, or Unity Triangle as a stand-alone article anymore. This is why I concentrated on posting bundles of illusions from same artist as one-post gallery. On the other hand, you may see me group similar illusions from various artists under one categorical title (ie. Ultimate Murals Gallery). I’m doing this to spare your time, while giving you extra shots wrapped with single background text. This is one of the reasons why today’s post would make no sense, would it be scattered in dozen of single-photo articles. I hope you share my view!

Irina and her Wonder Table

Irina and her Wonder Table

Irina Kuznetsova is an artist whose name I either spelled wrong, or there is not much info about her to be found on the web. Anyway, Irina is the artist behind these CG (Computer Generated) photos. Even though her pictures are produced digitally, and don’t exist in real world – it doesn’t make her art less worthy. We already proved how these can be produced in real-life (check this and this article).

Irina’s signature can be found in most of her works. She seamlessly integrates a “copy” of herself inside the photo, resulting her virtual interaction with the object. This adds additional complexity to her works, not to mention Sexiness. You can check more of her works in the gallery below. While all of the photos you see are CG, I have to admit I’m not exactly sure whether all of them were actually produced by Irina. Don’t forget to open above two photos in full-size to better experience the effect!

Relative Sizes category consists of hundred interesting optical illusions, but the problem occurs when you start understanding them. When you see one, it is if you have seen all. All of them start to look the same. This is probably why none of them were posted lately. Well, this time Alan Mountain ensured we get ourselves some fresh, and even more complex material! In the photo below you can see Jochen and Marita Wiesner interact with an installation at an exhibition called Tour of Senses in Dresden, Germany. As you see, the exhibition deals with senses and plays with our perceptions. If you don’t have a clue how this optical illusion was produced, you should check this hint. If you are still having trouble, you are allowed to see the solution.

In spite there was another 3d chalk drawing article posted few days ago, when I found these two shots, they really looked somehow special. The artist behind “The Sink” is a person that goes under nickname mydogsighs. He created this piece at the Southsea Skate Park in south England. Is it only me or can you smell Julian Beever influence from miles away?

“With the exception of the center crew and the black holes, this was pretty much free hand. Getting the perspective on the drop in the center was a nightmare, but worth all the hard work (well, i think so)” – My Dog Sighs.

Apart from writing more about what you can see on the photos yourselves, there isn’t much more to add – we already discussed everything in this field. More on the personal side, I’d like to mention how I heard about this twisted club called “The Box” located in NYC. Apparently its visited by native New Yorkers only, and gives a really unique burlesque experience. Hope I manage to make a reservation for it, while on my NYC trip. Any advice how can I make sure I get in some of the popular NYC clubs, without being left outside waiting?  Some tips you locals would like to share? Anyone wants to be my “reference” on this quest? Can’t wait to read your comments on this…

Are these kids so small, or is it some sort of mega sink?
