Impossible Structures by Erik Minnema

As a huge Apple fanboy I’m more than excited about tomorrow’s iPhone 5 event. I just hope it won’t end up being the same thing, only taller. What do you think? In the mean time while we await, here are some impossible structures created and photographed by #Eric_Minnema. Up till now I didn’t have a clue Erik was responsible for one of my all-time favourite impossible objects, one we featured more than 3 years ago! Which of the structures included inside this post you like the most?

  1. We can’t even get 4G where I live. One day the world will come to West Kentucky, sigh. Anyways, I love these. I can’t quite work out the wood one. I’m sure it has something to do with his hand placement.

  2. i didnt get the second one at first, but its awesome now that i do.
    third ones the best though – nice and simple
    also – where do you get marbled lego? awesome, I want some

  3. I like the wooden frame the best.

    Out of interest, the words in play on the Scrabble board are as follows:
    STAPJE VOOR
    STAPJE HOGER

    This translates from the Dutch to read
    [A] STEP FORWARDS
    [A] STEP HIGHER

  4. I don’t get any of them apart from the top one (which is simple enough to understand). The rest don’t look like optical illusions to me. The chess board is simply a chequered board and the lego one just looks like a lego sculpture to me, can’t see any ‘illusion’ at all. Can anyone point me in the right direction or is everyone else struggling like me?!

  5. Actually, they are quite possible to make – apart from the castle and the chess illusion.

    The scrabble one is a bit of a disappointment! The wooden one can be made easily. The design on the right side has to have that wooden peice on top, The peice on the left should not align onto the design on the right, rather placed a bit forward so it is not levelled. From an angle, it will look as it is level, with one peice starting fromt he top, then ending at the bottom.
    Easy.

  6. love your work mr. v. all of your illusions to me are masterpeices keep up the ab fab job mr. v. love your website and its fulol of interesting and informative illusions. god bless your canada friend nadia!
    by the way this illusion is simple its all about the camera angles and the view of the impossible objects its all abour the camera angles and the view points ciao!

  7. In the scrabble game, the words are Dutch.

    stapje = step
    hoger = higher
    voor = for

    and the tiles in the rack are Escher

    “Step higher for Escher” (?)

    1. “voor” in Dutch *can* be “for”, but in this case I’m peretty certain it’s “forwards” :)
