Elevator With No Floor! Go Ahead, Step Inside…

Loyal visitors of this websit already know that sometimes (better – always on this site ;) things aren’t what they appear to be. Here’s a case in point – the floor of this elevator is painted to give the illusion that there’s no floor at all. It’s a trompe l’oeil that’s realistic enough to convince the bypassers that there is indeed a tunnel in the elevator floor. Truth is, that it’s just a painting done by artist Wile E. Coyote. Additional, there is a sign warning, that says: “work in progress.” After a few people walk in, you’ll be able to see the footprints, and the illusion might not be so convincing. There are more pics inside this article. But even more can be found in “Sidewalk Drawings Category” and “Murals Category”. For simmilar one, use the search box in our sidebar and enter “duracell sticker”!

  1. could be in china too coz they share the same characters. but most likely japan since they’re more innovative.

  3. great illusion! it looks like its just the way the lower walls are painted… at least thats what I’m guessing

  4. what do you mean how is that an illusion? it’s a painted floor that appears to be a tunnel….but its not….
    we call such things illusions.

  5. How is that an illusion?
Because it looks like something but is actually something else.

Why would someone go into an elavator?
That’s how you use them. You go into them. If no one ever went into it, what would be the point in having it?

How is it not an illusion? It looks like there is no floor, yet there is. Sounds like an illusion to me.

Very cool pic. I’d like to see people that didn’t know about it try and get on the elevator, see how scared they’d be to step in :)

    1. They wouldn’t be scared at all, they just wouldn’t enter.. Would you if you didn’t know it was an illusion? I certainly wouldn’t.. Too real looking.

  7. wot do u mean how is that an illusion? its one thing that seems to be another, aint that the definition of an illusion. its really cool, they should do it in more

  8. “how is that an illusion?”
Definitions of illusion (courtesy of dictionary.com):
    1. something that deceives by producing a false or misleading impression of reality.
    2. the state or condition of being deceived; misapprehension.
    3. an instance of being deceived.
    4. Psychology. a perception, as of visual stimuli (optical illusion), that represents what is perceived in a way different from the way it is in reality.
    5. a very thin, delicate tulle of silk or nylon having a cobwebbed appearance, for trimmings, veilings, and the like.
    6. Obsolete. the act of deceiving; deception; delusion.

  9. Well done, but not really fun for someone who’s experienced it: As an architect/construction manager, I’ve on numerous occasions opened elevator doors to either get people out who were trapped or to fix mechanical malfunctions. It’s quite impressive to open the doors on a floor, only to see the cab descending into nether regions!

Nice idea, though, approaching all of our perceptive fears!

  10. “how is that an illusion? and why would someone go in there anyway?!”

Uh… so they don’t have to walk up a bunch of stairs. You ARE familiar with the concept of elevators…. You’re not FROM this planet… ARE YOU?

  11. #2 – my chinese is pretty bad but i can usually distinguish chinese from japanese (despite them using chinese characters, it has changed over time so japanese writing tends to look more “loopy” to me) and this definitely looks chinese. my dad confirmed that in fact it is and that it’s probably from taiwan since they use a more traditional chinese and vertical writing is more common there than on mainland

so watch who you’re calling not innovative!

  12. wow i really wanna see it once.

BTW…it’s difinitely in china. caz i’m japanese, and i cant read the sign.

  13. Omg, this is SOOO kewl! I would be freaked out to go in the elevator though, lmao…I would think I was falling. But that is soo totally waay kewl!

    ;^P

  14. It’s Chinese!!! I can tell the difference between Chinese and japanese. Yes, it does look more… loopy… i’m Chinese myself so i should know. i don’t think japanese ppl would come up with stuff like this anyway… innovative… I CAN READ THE SIGN!! oh yeah, nobody cares…

  15. Great affect, but this wasted time about Japan -VRS- China, loops or non loops. No one has translate the dang sign. Now that you have taken my thoughts away from the great photo. What does it say?

  16. Woah! Neat Illusion! If I were there, my friends (some of them) would probably push me in, thinking it really was a bottomless pit.

If it really didn’t have a floor, wouldn’t it have cables to move the elevator up and down?

  17. NO YOU NOOBS its actually not there, i dare you to walk in there with your eyes closed and hands tied together ….

  18. No dur lance! If people read things then they would no more.So you just don’t even see the FRICKIN ARTICLE.

  19. it’s an illusion because thats the floor, it was probably painted that way.. there has to be a floor there.. or that dude sitting on the railing is screwed.

  20. it looks like there was a line outside the elevator and someone sent a littler kid inside because they were too afraid to go in themselves.

    FUNNY.
