LG Detects 16 Faces, How about You?

Our Belgian friend Ellen spotted this new LG poster in the wild, and gracefully decided to share it with us. At first I haven’t noticed anything interesting about it, but luckily I was patient enough to read the bottom line before I ditched the photo. It says something about LG phones being able to detect up to 16 faces in one shot. Then I inspected the little phone icon, and noticed there are at least 16 hidden faces present in this perspective! Boy was I surprised! Apart from 5 obvious people and a picture on the wall, try and spot as many hidden faces you can. I’ll start by pointing out the branches in the window. Could it be a reference to our widgets icon? The one we borrowed from Sandra Bullock’s Premonition? I’ll let you find the other ones… Be sure to open the picture in full-size, and then you can check the little phone icon in the footer when you’re stuck! “Black Or White” Portrait

Today’s optical illusion was created and submitted by Terence Rosoman, who pointed out that things aren’t always as clear as black and white. At first, we only see bunch of different-sized black dots positioned on a white surface. But Terence gave us a big hint! In order to properly see the hidden picture, we should squint our eyes. We can also look at a picture from greater distance. This should help us seeing the hidden celebrity. Can you guess who it is? If you manage to see a figure, but don’t recognize the person, I advise you to read this post for a hint.

Even though I’m not the greats fan of this persona, I deeply appreciate his artistic contributions. If you like this kind of hidden images, you’ll gonna love Type Addicted book cover. Apart from Marylin Monroe and Santa Claus (?), there are many more similar illusions in our archives.

Glad you liked those Escape The Room games I posted! There are many more to come, in days to follow. Mainly because you requested so. At least this what the ratings in our previous post are telling me. I feared many would object to non-illusion orientated material, but I’m glad I was wrong. But now we should return to our main course. I have prepared something interesting for today. As simple as it may be, this photo managed to trick me. Probably because I tend to overlook the details, always concentrating on the “big picture”. This probably makes me superficial at observing things, but there isn’t much I can do about it. I’m sure you’ll see it quicker than I did, but just in case you don’t – there are hints all over the place. Check the file-name, tags… and if all this doesn’t help, would I make your life easier if I told you that the poster bellow was actually an ad done for Disneyland? Yeah, trivial – I know…

Second Best Optical Illusion EVER?

Remember the Best Optical Illusion Ever article, posted two months ago? Well, those of you who’ve seen it will have no trouble understanding this one. Rest of you, quickly jump to the prequel post before continuing with this one. Ok, now when you know where this is going, there’s still one additional Easter Egg left. There is a gallery included below, which reveals how this optical illusion came to existence. In my humble opinion, Craig Tracy really deserves being included in some sort of Art Hall of Fame. Did I remind you that what you are seeing is a real life photo? Now for that Easter Egg – count how many individuals were included this time ;)

What can you see in this picture?

When you run a website like this, it’s on your mind even when you’re not at work. So I had this great thought I wanted to share with you in the second paragraph reserved for my personal bablings, but unfortunately I can’t remember it. This started to happen more often lately, so it’s either me being distracted, or I am aging. Either way, I’ll have to think about carrying some kind of diary with me, and begin writing things down.

I found this illusion last week, and since it wasn’t easy for me to solve it immediately, here’s a test for you… I think it has more to do with Rorschach test, and less with optical illusions in their true nature.

But if I was strictly selecting 100% optical illusions, we wouldn’t have much material to cover. Would we? Anyway, if you look at the top-right picture, it won’t make much sense. All you see is bunch of broken pieces, and some randomly scattered debris. But look what happens if we fill the broken parts with spilled ink… You can see the example in lower-left corner.

Add some ink, and you can see these were letters!

All of a sudden, we have no problem seeing scattered letters where once broken pieces stood. This effect presumably is related to the fact that the borders of letters vs. background are indistinguishable from the borders of letters vs. ink blot.

Type Addicted Optical Illusion Cover

Type Addicted is a typography book, often used by designers and graphic artists. Aside all this, probably it became popular just because of its front cover. Up-close the cover is an unassuming pattern of black and white triangles, but when you try and view the cover from a few feet back, the title of the book comes into focus. You can see the photo of this posted below. Each of these methods will help seeing the illusion: narrow your eyes and relax them, go slightly cross-eyed, and/or simply move few feet away from your monitor. Still, the best method for seeing this is reserved for those of you using our widget – shrinked thumbnail reveals it all, ayeh? If you wish to see more illusions that work on the same principal, you should check Soulwax CD cover, as well as pixelated versions of Marilyn Monroe, Johnny Depp, etc… Does anyone understand the science behind this? Only thing I noticed is that some of the black triangles (that produce letters) are slightly blurred. As always, chime in and let me know what you think about our newest illusion!

Another Mysterious Fleck

This one’s so simple, yet so hard to see if you don’t know what you are looking for. I haven’t spot the optical illusion until I read the solution that came with it. Don’t worry, it’s nothing abstract. Just when you spot what is hidden in this image, you won’t be able not to see it after that anymore – ever. Even if someone showed you this very same image years from now. Most of the similar ones were linked in our previous Mystery Dots article, so head there if you liked this one. I can give you a slight hint, though. Check this category to adjust your way of thinking ;)

Mysterious Dots Optical Illusion

So the picture below supposedly came from an old book: The Intelligent Eye, written by Gregory R. Unless you already saw this flick before, in all likelihood it won’t make much sense. It seems as if we are only seeing hundreds of black patches on a white background. But once you spot the illusion, you can’t go back. This example demonstrates the amazing capability of our visual system to organize visual input into interpretable shape. If you still can’t see it, the only hint I can give you, is to check these two articles about Sheldrake first. I’m not sure if this one was already posted sometime in the past, but if it was – my mistake!

After checking the results of our previous poll, I’m happy to learn that most of you do like my personal, offtopic touch. However, 30% of you dislike my unrelated comments, and since this number is too high to ignore, I’m proposing the following… From now on, I’ll give my best to divide the article in two paragraphs. First one referring to the illusion and it’s background story, while the other one (much like what I’m writing today) will contain unrelated babbling. Will this make both sides equally happy?

Lionmouse Optical Illusion

Can you see another animal in this picture?

Chances are slim that you could spot another animal’s face in this picture on your left. Yet, apart the animal king there is another, more insignificant animal hiding there. Before you check the solution below, I can give you a little hint: the illusion works in a quite similar way the Hidden Owl Illusion did. This should be more than enough for you.

As there is not much more to say about this funny flick, I’ll update you with some site concerning news. If you noticed, apart from translating the iGoogle gadget, we updated both Yahoo and Windows widgets as well. You can get the from here if you’re interested in recent changes. Even though there weren’t any major tweaks, it’s just they should be more stable now, plus I’ve added some design changes. Go ahead, try them and report what you think.

On the personal level, I’m constantly getting hit by additional offline and online tasks. To keep with this pressure, I’m going to invest more energy in hiring additional helpers for Mighty Optical Illusions. Square Calligraphy Classroom

Few days ago, Laura Bee sent me this photo by a Chinese artist called Xu Bing. Attached photo was taken on one of Xu’s classes titled: Square Calligraphy Classroom. The intention of this installation was to simulate a classroom-like setting, in a gallery or museum space. Desks are arranged with small containers of ink, brushes and a copybook with instructions on the basic principles of New English Calligraphy, a writing system invented and designed by the artist.

As people attempt to recognize and write these words, some of the thinking patterns that have been ingrained in them since they learned to read are challenged. It is the artists’ belief that people must have their routine thinking attacked in this way. While undergoing this process of estrangement and re-familiarization with one’s written language, the audience is reminded that the sensation of distance between other systems of language and one’s own is largely self-induced. That being said, if you look closely you’ll find the below characters not so hard to read…

A video titled ”Elementary Square-Word Calligraphy Instruction,” was played on a monitor during the exhibition, capturing the audience’s attention and inviting them to participate in the class. Once they were seated at the desks, the audience was instructed to take up their brushes and the lesson in New English Calligraphy begins.
