Richard Borwick discovered another phenomenal optical illusion this morning. Sure, we’ve seen the effect in action couple of times before, but then again – how often do you come across incredibly original optical illusions? Not often I guess… Still, what I’ve found so great about his discovery is how innocent it looks at first glance. Almost as if there was no evidence of the hidden illusion it holds… But wait! What if you blurred your vision just for a second? Go cross-eyed, blur your stare or simply step few feet back from your monitor. Now what you see? It has to be magic, right? Just when you’re done, be sure to share his identity…

Dunno whether you’ve heard of Frazz or not (I haven’t), but I guess it’s a popular comic in western hemisphere. From what I’ve learned, the comic regularly appears in over 200 newspapers worldwide, including the Los Angeles Times, Seattle Times, Chicago Tribune and Detroit News. Invented by Jef Mallett, it follows the adventures of an unexpected role model – an elementary-school janitor who’s also a Renaissance man. While he’s sweeping the hall, he’s whistling Beethoven. Or Lyle Lovett. He paints the woodwork in the classrooms; he paints a Da Vinci on the cafeteria wall. He’s a trusted authority figure who is every kid’s buddy. One such recent comic, included an optical illusion I thought you might like. How long does it take before you see it? Enjoy!

Vurdlak has already featured Craig Tracy in the past, along with some of his most incredible body-paint works. In fact, he even named Tracy’s snow leopard image as one of the best optical illusions in 2009. Of course, it’s precisely that amazing level of skill that made me want to display few more images by this amazing artist! So here we go:

“How good is he?”, you may ask. Well, let me put it this way: the image just on the right, if Tracy weren’t such a fantastic body painter, would most certainly be labeled NSFW (*Not Safe For Work). Fortunately, instead you are seeing a gorgeous tiger eye staring at you intensely. If you really want to see what kind of effort goes into creating these exquisite masterpieces, be sure to visit the authors website where you can see an array of photos and videos depicting the creation of these works of art.

In fact, if you are truly inspired by Mr. Tracy’s work, there is even an information on how you can volunteer to become one of his models, thus becoming a part of the creation yourself. Who knows, maybe one of you will be featured on Mighty Optical Illusions one day…

But don’t think for a moment that Tracy’s artwork is solely limited to realistic images of big cats being painted on human canvases. No, his talent ranges from Liu-Bolin-styled camouflage pieces…

to stunning floral paintings (that just happen to be painted on a naked person)…

Still, good illusions are always welcome. It doesn’t matter if they closely resemble some we’ve already seen before!

For example, look what Deviant artist megaossa has managed to come up with! Most interesting part is how I discovered his illusion gallery accidentally, thanks to our Facebook channel.

When I recently started promoting our FB page, I have secretly hoped for a critical mass, where at some point, good illusions and great talent would spontaneously find their way and reach us! Could it be that we have reached that point?

But let us return back on the topic. If I asked you, would you be able to spot all of the illusions in megaossa’s portfolio? For example, are you able to see the baby inside the below photo? Do you find this real-life version or the original Baby Tree Illusion better?

This optical illusion picture was taken from the Little Giant Book of Optical Illusions by Keith Kay, where it was originally presented as a puzzling pattern containing hidden black and white cows. As easy it was for me to spot the one hidden cow in it (what’s with all them cow illusions?!), I was never able to see any other cows present. BTW, this kind of Rorschach Test optical illusions proved quite popular in our archives, so make sure you check our spot the object category for more -they should be buried somewhere in there…

Rusty’s works sometimes include hard to find hidden stuff, but most of the time the illusion is simple and not so hard to spot at all! Yet each of his works turns out beautiful! Check the awkwardly named “Two Birds With One Stone” piece portrayed below. The huntsmen and his dog are preying on the harmless pheasant, while at the same time not being aware there is much bigger forest spirit guarding over the poor prey, carefully observing next step hunter is about to make. Hope you have a nice day, started by this relaxing story!

Had this (so called) “optical illusion” laying around for quite some time now. Originally titled “Even God has a sense of humor”, this photo shows a horrible aftermath of a location devastated by heavy floods. Cynics among you will spot it immediately, while for the rest it will take few moments before they can see it. My feelings are still mixed about today’s feature, specially when I tell you (this is the truth) how I originally planned to post this couple of years ago, but then Hurricane Katrina happened, and I felt it would be in bad taste. After a while I have revisited the idea, yet then this horrible <del>Tahiti</del> Haiti earthquake happened, leaving the island in ruins. Once again I decided against it. Hope you won’t find this offensive and mean in any way. Consider it dark humor, something that can’t hurt if properly dosed!

As it has been confirmed over and over again, sometimes there is much more to the eye than you can initially perceive. This specially goes for the items that have been featured on Mighty Optical Illusions website. Today’s featured artist comes from Ukraine, and is widely recognized because of his illusory oil paintings. His name is Oleg Shuplyak. The gallery you’re about to see hides a surreal world once you take a look at it more closely. Through carefully placed objects, characters, coloring and shadows, there is a second image in the painting which creates an optical illusion.

I’m not sure whether this artist was more influenced by Sandro Del Prete’s opus or works done by famous Octavio Ocampo, but those of you following this website for some time will immediately notice the resemblance! Just like Sandro, Oleg’s works usually feature a portrait of famous personalities. Go through the gallery below and see how many of them can you recognize. Van Gogh, Sigmund Freud and Salvador Dali are just few among dozens.

With works like these, it’s sometimes hard for the author to balance the weight of both images. Personally, I’m more fond of illusions where the “constructed”, 2nd image is more subtile. Oleg on the other hand, does quite opposite – The second image is so easily observable in some paintings, that you can actually miss the first one consisting of harmless landscape or characters in different settings. What you have to do then, is observe the painting more closely to actually see the initial setting and not concentrate on the faces. True skill of such artist is then evaluated by the fact how well did he construct the illusion, and whether the parts of landscapes constructing the illusion have useful part in the original setting. Artists often trap themselves by forcefully adding elements needed to construct the illusion, which don’t actually play their part well in the original setting. In my opinion, Oleg has mastered the technique just like Sandro did, and each part in his paintings seamlessly works in both images, the first “apparent” one, as well as the “hidden” illusory one. So, how many faces did you recognize? Which of his paintings did you like the most?

It’s actually quite strange we haven’t already featured this one below, as it stands as one of Rusty’s more prominent works. Depict below, a romantic scenery includes it all – an idilic porch, a swan, mountains in a distance and an intimate moment shared by young couple. But wait! Is the scenery truly intimate? If you look better you will see there is an intruder present! Actually when you find him, you’ll realize “intruder” might be too strong of a word for him. The man instead excellently contributes to the whole moment. He even masked himself not to distract the young couple. Well done Rusty, well done!

As seen on Deceptology blog, company called Quaker Oats published an interesting advertising booklet way back in 1895. This vintage booklet contained 25 nursery rhymes, but more importantly there was a DIY optical illusion puzzle printed on its front cover. Might be interesting to know this item is now sold as vintage collectable (also known as “advertising ephemera”). But let’s jump straight to the point – How many packages can you count? Are there 6 or 7 or 14 packages present? What happens if you turn the puzzle upside-down? Anyone volunteers to explain? If you wish, you can also print it, cut a hole in the middle and put a pencil through it, making it interactive in real world. Who knows, maybe this little curiosity would represent a fun distraction for you and your school buddies. Anyway, when you solve this one – head next to somewhat more complex puzzles. One involves a mad scientist and his soccer team, and the other missing eggs and boulders!

If you ask yourself why I have decided to feature some “ordinary vintage photos” on an optical illusions blog, think again. Work below is just a fraction of Spanish artist Paco Pomet’s portfolio. If you inspect the photos more closely, you’ll soon realize they’re in fact stunning oil paintings that are “just” a reproductions of vintage photographs. Not only do the works use a monochromatic palette and photo real style (which in itself I find quite impressive!) — but each of Pomet’s paintings includes something out of the ordinary that isn’t always recognizable at first glance. His illusions transform the vintage photos into something quite unexpected. What he does, he changes real people and places into surreal landscapes and portraits by tweaking tiny details that go unnoticed at first. Some end up more illusory that others, and these few I have decided to showcase. How long does it take before you discover hidden oddities? For more of Pomet’s incredibly detailed, well-rendered works, check his official homepage.

I won’t talk about how great this movie really was, and how it marked the whole era, I’d rather see what you think of the illusion attached below. By now you must have noticed it has something to do with our recent Psycho post. After my initial disappointment (having read your feedback), I learned that my previous pick just didn’t do justice to the whole cinemagraphs story. I learned how I failed in choosing the right representative to start this whole new category with. I just hope today’s sample will change all that. If you have time, feel free to read my thoughts on this from couple of days earlier.
