Bare with me, I know some of the content seems to repeat itself, but you have to understand we are constantly receiving waves of new (to become regular) visitors that might have missed our archives. Still, I always give my best effort not to repeat myself. Even though some of the illusions may look exactly the same, I never posted the exact same image twice (except unknowingly). For those of you who still don’t get what so special about the picture below, well it’s just that all of the lines in it are perfectly straight and parallel to each other. I think this is one of the best examples to show the Seemingly Bent Effect. Agree?

Are those circles, or continuous spiral?" width="150" height="150" />
Open this image in full-size. Are those concentric circles, or one continuous spiral?

Let us revisit the Seemingly Bent category. We hadn’t had unique optical illusion that belongs to this section, in quite a while. To remind you once again, Seemingly Bent category consists of illusions that give you impression you are seeing slanted lines and shapes, while in fact they are perfectly straight (or mutually parallel). Most famous example to represent this category could be “Cafe Wall“, followed by both slanted square and slanted seesaw.

Now that we have repeated the matter, I can proceed explaining today’s two specimens. First one on the right is nothing new to be frank. It’s just a more recent version of “Circles or Spiral” illusion. You can open the image in full-size to see the full effect. In short: the image gives you impression you are seeing continuous spiral, while there are only 6 concentric (ones that share the same center) circles instead. The second image below is new work by Akiyoshi Kitaoka, and believe it or not – all of the lines in it (consisted of gray blocks) are placed perfectly horizontal. I’m not pretty sure why is that, and does the color combination help making the effect stronger.

There’s a new optical illusion in town, and its name is “Bourdon Illusion“. The Bourdon illusion is the apparent “bentness” of the straight edge of a figure consisting of two elongated triangles arranged apex to apex.

Like you see in the image on your left, the upper side of the left-lower triangle is actually aligned with the upper side of the right-upper triangle, the former appears to tilt counterclockwise while the latter clockwise. What we are seeing here is “seemingly bent” type of illusion. But why?

Further, I’ve added three rather subtle illusions, each showing bent lines. In Bourdon’s illusion, to the left, the straight left hand edge looks bent again. In Humphrey’s figure, (central object), the straight, loose line touching the corner of the cube looks bent. In the figure to the right, the straight line interrupted by the corner looks bent.

I don’t think we really understand any of these illusions, and since they are not very dramatic, you don’t notice them very often. There’s probably a different explanation for each. For example, both the left and middle figures show a bent line that is the backbone of two triangles meeting at a point, so you might think “Hello, we’re getting somewhere”. But then you notice that the lines bend in different directions relative to the triangles inside each illusion.

The Bourdon Illusion, Humphrey's Figure and Corner Illusion

Well, this example might just show you why. Big news is that three best visual illusions in the world were chosen last weekend, at a gathering of neuroscientists and psychologists at the Naples Philharmonic Center for the Arts in Florida. We’ve been reporting about the annual competition each year, and this year’s winning submission was created by Arthur Shapiro, a Bucknell University professor.

A properly thrown curve ball spins in a way that makes the air on one side move faster than on the other. This causes the ball to move along a gradual curve. From the point of view of a batter standing on home plate, though, curve balls seem to “break,” or move suddenly in a new direction. This year’s winning illusion may explain this phenomena. Arturo’s animation shows a spinning ball that, when watched directly, moves in a straight line. When seen out of the corner of the eye, however, the spin of the ball fools the brain into thinking that the ball is falling towards the left. We had another VERY SIMILAR example posted few months ago.

So, as a baseball flies towards home plate, the moment when it passes from central to peripheral vision could exaggerate the movement of the ball, causing its gradual curve to be seen as a sudden jerk. Be sure to observe the falling ball directly, and indirectly (from aside) while reading the text embedded inside the animation. See the difference? Other winning illusions will be posted shortly. More can be found here.

Not from the illusion point of view, but me studying my ass of. Due to this situation, I have composed this post yesterday and set it to auto-publish itself today. How cool is that? About those fish oil pills that are supposed to improve your memory, I decided to avoid them for now, as I’m not the biggest fond of any kind of pills and medicament.

On your left you may see another known example of parallel zebra lines. As hard as it may be to imagine, both vertical sticks you see are perfectly straight, and mutually parallel. The strange background pattern is the guilty one for making them look they are leaning. Another interesting example can be seen below. Can you believe that all these snake-sampled lines are perfectly straight and parallel? No? Well, I’m just messing with you this time :) Had to test how strong my influence rally is. Enjoy your stay, and keep your fingers crossed for me passing the exam on Friday.

There is nothing complex about this Wonky-Tonk building. It has it’s roof, doors and four windows. There are also two of the tenants in front of it… but wait! Why are the tenants so upset? Apparently they are puzzled by the upper right window of their house. The landlord explained to them there is nothing wrong with it, and that the both upper windows are exactly the same. Although they wouldn’t be much satisfied even if the windows were completely identical, but they are still puzzled how his statement can be true? It is more than “obvious” that the right window is leaning much more to the left, than the left window. Is it possible that the landlord was right? Let’s try and prove this: if you remember the leaning tower optical illusion that won the 1st place in 2007 optical illusion contest, you will see where this goes. Jump inside the article to see the further proof:

If we highlight and paint the right window in red, then cut it from the original image, we can easily move it around the house. What I did next, I made this slice semi-transparent and placed it over the left window. I have to admit I was too shocked when I saw that both windows overlap perfectly. How did the landlord know this from the beginning? Did he construct the building this way on purpose? This is for us to ask, and for landlord to know.

As you see, the continuous animation on your left, pictures three grayish rods traveling up and down – indefinitely. Optical illusion produced here, makes my brain think the rods are also traveling to the right, altogether moving in a zigzagged direction. Am I the only one experiencing this? Do I have your support, or have I gone completely mad? Please tell me. Those black and white tiles located inside our little rods, surely appear often! It can’t be they are there by mistake. It’s funny how often we meet them. They were also present in our last illusion (funny building), if I’m not mistaken. Hope someone creates similar animations using this technique – there could be few more interesting results, don’t you think?

Hmm, last time we saw something like this, the illusion was horizontal. Does it work in vertical mode as well? You decide! Apparently the building pictured in this article stands perfectly upright, and has the same width of it’s footer, as of it’s last floor. How can it be? Why do we see it shaped as an upside-down trapezoid? Could it be only because of the black and white tiles used in the building’s facade? My guess is that we are dealing with a classic example of a Cafe Wall illusion, which messes with our brain, making us believe the edges are bent. If you would like to see more optical illusions that deal with architecture, be sure to check our archives, as well as belonging categories.

Now, I really love this one! Larry from Michigan sent me an image I couldn’t miss sharing with you. What we have here is a classic example of “Slanted Lines” illusion, just like the one we published on Monday. The usage of the effect is more advanced this time, since it additionally exploits the nature of the object presented. A seesaw (also known as a teeter-totter or teeter board) is a long, narrow board suspended in the middle. As one end goes up, the other one goes down. When we first see the example below, it looks logical that the right end went down due to heavy triangle positioned on it. The illusion shows just what you naturally expect, but the raw truth is that the seesaw is balanced perfectly horizontal, and doesn’t outweigh – nor left, nor right. You can easily prove this by squeezing your eyes, till you just see the outlines of the seesaw. Thanks for stumbling and sharing this!

Update 1 (02/22/2009): Since yesterday, I have received this enhanced animation from visitor that goes by the name Mr. Anonym. His version might help you in seeing the effect little better. You should be able to spot the moment after which the seesaw gets slanted.

Update 2 (02/22/2009): Alessandro aka SuperSandro sent another example where he modified this illusion. Now the seesaw is actually slanted, but appears perfectly balanced. Here is what Alessandro wrote – “Hi! Today I’m happy to send you this attached file. It’s the same as slanted Seesaw, but rotated for 4 degrees on the rectangle’s side. It seems to be horizontal, but of course it is not.”
