As Freshome first reported, there is a new optical illusion toy in town, more specifically an impossible triangle vase. If you were looking for the perfect vase to match your favorite plant, 90° just may be the winner! Originally designed by Cuatro Cuatros, the product is based on a heavily familiar drawing of an impossible triangle, converted into a geometrical shape with volume. We’ve featured over a dozen such triangles in our impossible objects section, yet and the only problem with this vase -is that it only works when seen from one certain angle.

Depending on the point of view, both ends coincide and make it look like a closed figure. The interposition, orientation and perspective create a contradiction of the space that makes us perceive something that is not. This way, the vase becomes more than just a functional object, turning into a decorative piece that plays with perception. You can place it anywhere inside your home, as its clean, simple shape can pleasantly interfere with both a modern and traditional decor. Just put some water inside the crazy triangle vase and watch how the flower blooms in the company of an awesome optical illusion!

Still no luck? Then feel free to jump inside this article, and scroll until you see the solution!

As seen on Deceptology blog, company called Quaker Oats published an interesting advertising booklet way back in 1895. This vintage booklet contained 25 nursery rhymes, but more importantly there was a DIY optical illusion puzzle printed on its front cover. Might be interesting to know this item is now sold as vintage collectable (also known as “advertising ephemera”). But let’s jump straight to the point – How many packages can you count? Are there 6 or 7 or 14 packages present? What happens if you turn the puzzle upside-down? Anyone volunteers to explain? If you wish, you can also print it, cut a hole in the middle and put a pencil through it, making it interactive in real world. Who knows, maybe this little curiosity would represent a fun distraction for you and your school buddies. Anyway, when you solve this one – head next to somewhat more complex puzzles. One involves a mad scientist and his soccer team, and the other missing eggs and boulders!

These Heads Up Juice Glasses (which can be found in our partner store) come with two glasses consisted of multiple meaning illusions, one featuring a boy and one featuring a girl, both of which transform into an older version of the same character when flipped upside down.

I have to say, I think the girl illusion above is way stronger than the boy one below. The man with the beard on the boy’s cup is much harder to see than any of the other characters, mostly because of his weirdly wrinkled brow.

Of course, if you require a little inebriation prior to being able to see your illusions, you might consider skipping the glasses and going right to the bottle. This Before & After beer can help remind you just what might happen if you down a few too many bottles.

Here’s to hoping none of your night’s events end up looking quite so drastically different by the light of day!

Designer Marc Böttler used stacked wooden blocks and combined them with tricky camera angles to turn children’s playthings into a cool set of optical illusions. He calls it his Klotz Type Experiment. Because they only form letters when viewed from certain direction, it might be one of the first official anamorphic alphabets that could be used on a computer. I think it would be really cool if he were able to turn these into an official optical illusion font, even if the full 3D anamorphic effect can be seen in person only.

I’ve never been very good at wooden block architecture, so I never really made anything all that impressive with the toys when I was younger. They do seem like a good, albeit underutilized, medium for art projects. Have any of you ever made cool stuff with wooden blocks?

Flickr user mamassage knitted this cool anamorphic scarf that looks like it’s just another stripped scarf until you see it from the right angle -then it reveals a hidden alien pattern between the stripes. Even if you stare at it long enough without tilting it, you’ll eventually see the aliens, but I doubt you’d really notice while someone was wearing the scarf.

It’s a little like this striped Garfield picture Vurdlak posted back in April. A good knitter could even make a scarf from that, although Garfield would undoubtedly appeal to an entirely different crowd than the alien from this scarf.

Personally, I’d love to wear a something like this, knowing I was the only one who would know about the illusion for the most part. Would you guys wear this or at least one with a similar illusion knitted in?

P.S. Here’s another example that found it’s way through. Thank youTrevor for sending this in!

The art installation you’re about to see was designed by Peter Bristol, a lead product designer at Seattle-based product development consultancy Carbon Design Group. As author described it in his own words, “The Cut Chair” provides a stable place to sit, but creates an optical illusion that tells you otherwise. It usually takes few moments before people conclude how this trick works, yet the solution is pretty straight-forward. A plate concealed by a thick carpet allows a robust cantilevered seat. Three well placed leg “stumps” and the chair looks as though it has just been magically sliced apart. Peter is currently looking for a partner that would like to have the Cut Chair made for installation or production.

If you are heavyweight Internet user, there is a great chance you already encountered this gallery before. As it seems, from a bending bookcase apartment to a branching bookshelf, what we put our books on has evolved over time. John Leung and Australian architecture firm Clarkehopkinsclark have created the isometric perspective bookshelf with a design that furthers this evolution. Named Bias of Thought, it’s perplexing yet still very practical. One can use the bookshelf for storing books or hang stuff by placing them in the glass-lined shelves. Check out the gallery inside for more photos and a solution! If you’re a member of our Facebook page (like!), you can see the video presentation of this strange -looking bookshelf in action.

The piece you see on your left is entitled: “Front around the clock”, and is made from a metal disk with a diameter of 55 cm. The 12 hours are applied perpendicularly to the base and are only legible by their shadows cast on the white surface.

When people first notice the clock hanging from a wall (example photo inside this post), they don’t seem to notice what’s so different about it. Yet inspecting it from lesser distance, made them smile and whisper “ah!”. Why I am not so sure about this one, is because you probably need to apply special care to where sun light or other artificial light beams will be coming from.

As they claim: this design is perfect for those who are into challenges. Time it displays is a hidden optical illusion stereogram of some sort.

Getting used to it requires training your eyes first. Only then you will be able to see the hidden numbers embedded in some kind of a greenish maze. On the other hand, if you have trouble seeing the time on the standard display, just touch the main button, and it outlines the individual digits.

In my knowledge this is only a concept, and hasn’t entered the manufacturing process yet. Perhaps it could be an interesting toy, at least before you get bored by it. So what do you think? Would you buy this watch if it was available for purchase? Me? I’m not really sure I would… always had trouble seeing stereograms.

Here’s a confusing puzzle, also known as Confuzzle, that can be made in minutes. Although this puzzle involves simple geometric principles, it is surprising and even baffling for some people. In short, it’s a quick and easy toy you can prepare yourself in minutes, that is tons of fun when assembled and understood.

Most of you will quickly connect this post with our famous Preposterous Puzzle, which goes hand in hand with the original Impossible Triangle.
Purchase It!

Some of you may remember, how few months ago we’ve posted a peculiar illusory toy, named Dice Mirror. After seeing such an amount of positive reactions, I decided to share another interesting puzzle which is also available to wider public. This one is called Preposterous Puzzle, and logic behind it, closely relies on optical illusion principles.

Our assignment is relatively simple: what we have to do, is rearrange the wooden blocks, but in such way that one extra slot is retrieved, where additional wooden square can be placed. Sounds somewhat impossible, ayeh? Well, contrary to our belief, the answer exists. I kid you not!

You can get the scoop of what I’m talking about via images included, but the problem can be understood better, if you check one of our previous illusions called Missing Piece.

Let’s repeat the core: At first glance you see a square completely filled with wooden pieces. Then you’re asked to insert a smaller square into the middle without removing any pieces. Obviously there is just not enough space. Apparently no-one told the makers of this puzzle that it’s inherently flawed and unsolvable. But is it? The Preposterous Puzzle can be solved indeed, however refuse to open your mind, and it will silently taunt you forever. Using our cumulative optical illusion experience (check this one), I believe we can solve the puzzle in no-time. If you like this optical illusion toy, it’s available for purchase in our partner store!

Called X-Tape, this optical illusion hinge tape gives creativity the fun-edge that it requires. I’m not positive if this is just an art exhibit, or whether this can be bought as a product. Anyone has more details?
