Even though, only 7% of male population is color blind, I thought it would be interesting to explore reverse color tests, where rest of us would have difficulty solving them. I have found exactly what I was hoping for at G. Sarcone’s website! In fact, most color blind people can easily read what is written in the picture above. That means, if you fail the test, you probably have the full range of color sensitivity that is attributed to color-sighted people. Anyway, this test is not to be considered by itself sufficient to determinate defective color vision. Now let’s see a mockup of what they were able to read, while rest of us couldn’t:

Color vision deficient people have a tendency to better night vision and, in some situations, they can perceive variations in luminosity that color-sighted people could not. It might also be worth mentioning how U.S. Army discovered that color blind people could spot “camouflage” colors that fooled those with normal color vision!

Regular Color Blindness Test no.1

Now let’s see if you are able to find a circle, star, and/or square in this Demonstration Card below. In reality, everyone should be able to see a circle, star, and square as this is a demonstration piece only.

Regular Color Blindness Test no.2

Let’s see how the previous, “normal” tests worked like. Try and find a circle, star, and/or square in 3 seconds or less in this picture below. While the colorblind individuals should only see the yellow square. Color normal individuals should see the yellow square and a “faint” brown circle.

Regular Color Blindness Test no.3

The question is same -are you able to find a circle, star, and/or square in 3 seconds or less in this picture below? Just the opposite from previous test, colorblind individuals should now see the yellow circle, while color normal individuals should see the yellow circle and a “faint” brown square.

After seeing this grayish dartboard below, and being a regular fan of Might Optical Illusions blog, the question arises almost spontaneously – Do the light and dark regions, as indicated by the arrows, appear to be different? Which region is actually darker? Believe it or not, they are identical! Errrm…Well, at least they should be! Please bear in mind that the picture you see below was first scanned and then uploaded by the person who sent it to me, so they might not actually be the same. Still, in the end it might help the illusion to work even better! As it might turn out that the darker region is the one that appears lighter at the first glance! You be the judge…

This optical illusion picture was taken from the Little Giant Book of Optical Illusions by Keith Kay, where it was originally presented as a puzzling pattern containing hidden black and white cows. As easy it was for me to spot the one hidden cow in it (what’s with all them cow illusions?!), I was never able to see any other cows present. What do you make of it? BTW, this kind of Rorschach Test optical illusions proved quite popular in our archives, so make sure you check our spot the object category for more -they should be buried somewhere in there…

Getting the answer to the question presented before you is a lot harder than you may originally perceive. Still, if I helped you out with some additional fun-facts, you might actually have a chance at cracking this. So, what we you should know is that the author behind this installation is Markus Raetez, person responsible for YES/NO ambiguous sculpture we featured recently. Markus has a great talent for ambiguous art, and also loves making a reference to every-day items in his creations. Playing around with Moillusions way of tagging and lurking file-names is a big no-no. It might help, but this would mean taking a shortcut, and we all know you can do better than that. If none of this helped, you might as well expand and reveal the solution anyway – like I care. But it would be interesting to learn if some of you actually came to conclusion on their own! (PS checking above hyperlinks might provide additional hint or two ;)

As seen on Deceptology blog, company called Quaker Oats published an interesting advertising booklet way back in 1895. This vintage booklet contained 25 nursery rhymes, but more importantly there was a DIY optical illusion puzzle printed on its front cover. Might be interesting to know this item is now sold as vintage collectable (also known as “advertising ephemera”). But let’s jump straight to the point – How many packages can you count? Are there 6 or 7 or 14 packages present? What happens if you turn the puzzle upside-down? Anyone volunteers to explain? If you wish, you can also print it, cut a hole in the middle and put a pencil through it, making it interactive in real world. Who knows, maybe this little curiosity would represent a fun distraction for you and your school buddies. Anyway, when you solve this one – head next to somewhat more complex puzzles. One involves a mad scientist and his soccer team, and the other missing eggs and boulders!

Youtuber who goes under the name of brusspup noticed how this illusion has been around for a long time but always in the form of an image. His goal was to take it away from a flat piece of paper and turn it into a real, life-sized illusion that people could interact with. Obviously, brusspup has succeeded. He even included a scaled-down template for us to download and play with (file courtesy – brusspup).

Here’s how the author explained the effect and what he has done to achieve it:

The illusion works because of the “shadow” that falls on the checkerboard. Lets think of the square that the shadow falls on. Now picture that the shadow doesn’t exist: you would see a light colored square surrounded by the dark colored squares. But when the shadow falls on top of that light colored square, the shadow causes the shade to become darker but it also causes the surrounding darker squares to become darker. So within the shadow region the brightness and darkness of the squares are still relative to one another. But they are no longer relative to the squares that lie outside of the shadow.

So if you were able to pick up the middle square and move it to one of the outside dark squares, they would be 2 different shades, But the trick is ..that when you move the square you are moving it WITH the shadow still printed on the square. So now you’ve moved it out of its relative area, outside of the shadow region (but with the shadow still printed on the square) ..to the area where it’s the same shade as the “dark” square.

What I’m about to show you is an illusion you don’t see every day! Observe the woman shown on your right. Would you say her eyes are shut or wide open? Something is painted alright, the only problem is whether she’s having fake eyes painted on top of her eyelids, or perhaps only her eyebrows aren’t genuine. What do you think?

If you’re into scary illusions, there was this one particular picture that resembled today’s photo. I think the article went live almost 5 years ago under “Scary Illusion no.5” headline. Be sure to check it out and decide which one you like better. What I do know is that the real answer (for both of these pictures) is trickier than you think!

After some debate, we’ve concluded how these guys manage to fool us with impression they’re able to levitate. It all started with Johan Lorbeer and Flying Yogi. Remember those guys? Most of you probably missed them, as we blogged about the trick long time ago. So, let’s repeat our findings. How does the trick, this guy in below performs, actually works? It’s obvious he couldn’t support his own weight just by leaning on the vertical pole, right?

Just came back from Paris yesterday evening. Can’t say I enjoyed much. Apart from marvelous architecture and breath-taking historic sights and museums, it felt like any other European metropolis. Perhaps I expected too much, thus was little bit disappointed. I enjoyed seeing Napoleon’s resting place at Les Invalides, and Louvre museum the most. There were so much tourists, I couldn’t stop feeling like one. Perhaps if I had some local friends, they could help me experience local life (and point me where I could eat some good food), ultimately making the trip much more interesting…

Sorry for such a long intro, just wanted to inform you I’m back now (and how last few posts were set to automatically appear each day, and were written few days ago ;). It’s also why it took so much time to get your comments approved. Now that I have charged my batteries once again, let me roll up my sleeves and continue sharing some good stuff! For today I bring you two posters that feature Missing Pieces illusion we featured some time ago. Seems that Chupa-Chups company jumped the optical illusion billboard wagon as well!

Now here’s one that will make you scratch your head, and exhaust your brain cells. After carefully observing the picture below, how would you answer the following question – which forefinger points exactly to the middle of the shape’s height? Would you go with finger A, finger B or both at the same time? This optical illusion is only one among pile of great ones created by incredible G. Sarcone. Use the comment form below to explain what influenced your choice! You can see the solution posted after the first picture, so be sure not to scroll down, before thinking of an answer!

Solution – It’s strange enough how great majority of people firmly believe that both fingers point at the middle of the shape’s height, this also goes for the individuals aware that one on the right appears to be lower (?!). The truth is that only finger B points to middle of the shape’s height, which you can see demonstrated in the figure below:

Check out the thumb on your right, and another one used as preview for a video embedded below. Now before you see the video, can you figure out which one of the objects placed on a plain sheet of paper is real? Being more precise, try and figure out which one of the little toy soldiers is the real one, and also try and distinguish those that are simple anamorphic prints. Same goes for the two bunnies on your right!

The video you see below was produced by Leo Burnett’s advertising agency in São Paulo, Brazil and was done for Samsung to advertise their printers. Seems that agencies started using illusions much more frequently in their approach lately! Does it mean we can expect much more professionally produced optical illusion content in the future? Let’s just wait and see!

Here’s an awesome one sent in by Joao Gratuliano. It took me really long time before I understood what happened here, supposedly there was no photoshopping involved. How come the hanging bars project a shadow on a background wall, while the hand doesn’t? Can it be that the author is a ghost, or vampire maybe? BTW, they say vampires have no mirror reflection, but what about their shadow? Now that I mentioned it, never thought about it really… Ok, let’s see who solves this one first!

Martin Luther King once said: “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.” As Deceptology blog mentioned, the problem is that too many people think his words are an illusion. Unless we look deeper, we may find that much of what we think is true is not true. For instance, the words in the photograph above are not the exact words spoken by Martin Luther King, Jr. You may only think they are his exact words. Can you determine why is his text another optical illusion featured on this site? How about if I give you a slight clue?
