That’s why DeviantArt user ChozoBoy’s pixelized Samus Aran and Chozo Metroid costumes are so darn impressive whether viewed in person or on camera.

These well-designed costumes are made with little more than cardboard, glue and paint. But they are still incredibly visually striking when viewed from the side.

In fact, the costumes are all the rage at the Otakon Convention where they managed to stand out even when put together with other pixelized costumes, like these Minecraft characters.

The use of multiple layers of cardboard to allow for maximum movement make these costumes look far more like the real video game characters they were made to represent.

On an interesting side note, “Chozo,” the name of the bird-like characters that served as surrogate parents of Metroid hero Samus Aran, actually means “race of bird-humans” in Japanese. Although, they admittedly don’t look very birdish in their 8-bit forms.

If you’ve noticed that all the pictures up until this point were taken from the side, there’s a good reason for that. The illusion only works from the side, as it would have been practically impossible to make 8 bit characters like these look so realistic in a 360 view. Even the game was made as a side-scroller originally.

But in case you’re curious just what the costume looked like from the front, allow me to destroy the illusion for you. On the upside, at least you can see how it is operated so well.

And here’s a shot of the Samus Aran costume while it was being constructed. As you can tell, the work that went into these is undeniably impressive.

If you were going to make any 8 bit character into a pixelated costume, who would you choose? Personally, I think I’d go for Tails from Sonic the Hedgehog. He was always my favorite.

Some of you may remember, how few months ago we’ve posted a peculiar illusory toy, named Dice Mirror. After seeing such an amount of positive reactions, I decided to share another interesting puzzle which is also available to wider public. This one is called Preposterous Puzzle, and logic behind it, closely relies on optical illusion principles.

Our assignment is relatively simple: what we have to do, is rearrange the wooden blocks, but in such way that one extra slot is retrieved, where additional wooden square can be placed. Sounds somewhat impossible, ayeh? Well, contrary to our belief, the answer exists. I kid you not!

You can get the scoop of what I’m talking about via images included, but the problem can be understood better, if you check one of our previous illusions called Missing Piece.

Let’s repeat the core: At first glance you see a square completely filled with wooden pieces. Then you’re asked to insert a smaller square into the middle without removing any pieces. Obviously there is just not enough space. Apparently no-one told the makers of this puzzle that it’s inherently flawed and unsolvable. But is it? The Preposterous Puzzle can be solved indeed, however refuse to open your mind, and it will silently taunt you forever. Using our cumulative optical illusion experience (check this one), I believe we can solve the puzzle in no-time. To be sincere, I played this for half an hour, but then I got stuck with some colorful cubes. You’ll know what I’m talking about when you get your hands dirty. Also, I have more pictures and info, I didn’t provide last time. Apparently Danlock comes only with two keys – one attached to the shackle, and the other is broken (no trick there). I also found out, that it’s rather more difficult to get the lock back to the same state as it is delivered to you. It involves the solving of at least 3 quite distinct puzzles.

I searched the whole web to find the solution, and couldn’t find one. Maybe it’s better like this, since it’s much more fun. I believe it would be much easier if I actually had this item in my hands. For now, my best guess is that the lock is infact tricky, and that it can be opened with left part of the broken key itself, then maybe with other part (keyhole not as deep as the broken part), or maybe without key. Cool game! Does that little ring attached to broken key has any role in this? Are the numbers on the key some kind of combination? I emailed Dan Fieldman (the creator), and hopefully he will participate in our discussion. Also, solutions like: “Use the chainsaw“, “Photoshopped” etc… are invaluable.
