Camouflaged Toads Optical Illusion

National Geographic is proud owner of some of the best photos in the world. Here and then a photo jumps out, containing an interesting effect which sometimes can be seen as optical illusion. Just check out this National Geographic tag, and you’ll be amazed how many illusions on this site are from NG. Anyway, today’s optical illusion was submitted by Urban Ambrozic and Grégory Plantard. We get many of “camouflage” illusions, but most of them don’t make it to the front page of Moillusions. This one however, took my attention. First I only saw one campuflaged toad – thought : “hm, its ok”, but after few moments I was able to spot the second and third one! How many of them are there?! Those three leaf-litter toads were collected within yards of each other, and its amazing how they almost disappear on a forest floor in Panama. For them to stay alive in the tropics (where nearly everything is food for something else), often calls for such trickery to fool a predator’s eye. Below the photo, you may see a gallery of few similar photos (by NG as well). Can you spot an insect hiding in each of them? Those little animals could very well put Liu Bolin and Emma Hack to a shame. Amazing!

Disappearing Surfaces Optical Illusion

As you can imagine, it becomes harder and harder for me to find quality optical illusions, and continue posting them regularly. Often I wonder will a day come, when there is no fresh material left for me to post. Fortunately, there are still few hundred never before published illusions sitting on my computer, but I still highly depend on you guys and gals, and your regular quality submissions. So keep ‘em coming – please! Before you send you submission, ask yourself these questions first: Was my illusion already published on MOI? Is the picture interesting enough? Is the effect good enough? Is the quality of the picture good enough?

For today I picked this tremendous, yet simple example of Disappearing surfaces. Although, you may think this illusion isn’t as complex as you are used to, I promise the effect it holds justifies its presence. Loyal visitors may already experienced this effect through our “Disappearing Act” category, but will probably enjoy this as much as all of our newcomers. What you should do, is simply concentrate on the center black dot, until both of the blue rectangles disappear. Don’t believe me? Try it yourself. It usually takes around 30 seconds or more for the effect to happen. That’s all folks, enjoy!

Disappearing Stars Optical Illusion

Whoa! Not only did I miss the second hidden face in our previous illusion, but was shocked today when I saw how many of you made a comment to point it out to me. As of this moment “Undershirt Illusion” has passed 300 comments, and all of this in less than 24 hours. By the way, thank you for showing me the other masculine face I missed. Neither me, nor my little brother managed to spot it at first. For today we have something different. The little animation below pictures a moon and 6 stars surrounding it, somewhere in a midnight hour. There is also a dotted circular layer moving in the background. If you manage to stay perfectly still, and concentrate your eyes on the moon (not moving your head), you’ll experience the disappearance of the yellowish stars. How many of them did you make disappear? I just remembered (after finishing this article), that we had a very simmilar illusion before.

Disappearing Yellow Dots Illusion

I had this illusion on my laptop for quite some time now. It looks very simple, but worked for me only yesterday. If you concentrate hard enough on the image center, after a while all three yellow dots will disappear! Don’t believe me? Try it for yourself! It may take some time and concentration, but the effect is amazing. Similar to “Find your blind spot” illusion. Remember that one?

Anyway, I just finished designing cool Wordpress theme, and bought great hosting, the only thing I need just now is someone to help me transfer all the posts from this site automatically, and import them to Wordpess blog. Anyone has some experience? The “Import” button in wordpress 2.2 doesn’t work. I think it has something to do with blogger changing RSS feed recently. I would really appreciate all the information I can get.

Count The Orange Spots Illusion

I’m proud to announce that we have started the “Co-editors” beta project. As the title says, there will be some guest bloggers writing articles in the following weeks. The reason I started this, is because there are so many submissions and illusions on my hard drive, that I can’t manage to post them all. This way we’ll have multiple bloggers writing entires for this blog, which means more illusions for you. We already have our first guest blogger, but I’ll keep him a secret until he properly introduces himself. For now this will only be a beta project, but if it works as I imagined (and there is no reason why it shouldn’t), we’ll have more and more posts each day, and probably promote these guest bloggers to full time co-editors.

I would like to take this opportunity invite you, if you are natural in English language, and have experience with blogger. Contact me if you are interested in becoming guest blogger. It’s really simple. I’ll give you material (illusions), and you are free to write whatever feels right (explanation, review of the photo etc.). You can also compose your own stuff. Let’s see how this goes…

For today, I give you Mourits de Beer’s “Count the Spots” illusion variation. As I said, it is variation of very famous optical illusion, that was used many times, even in some commercials. As simple as the picture below seems, it hides mysterious orange spots (in the grid crossings). Your assignment is to count them. Can you manage? This is what Mourits said: “Another illusion I somehow found while messing around. I’m sure that I don’t need to explain”.

Vanishing Stripes

Concentrate on the red spot in the middle of the rectangle, and watch gray stripes disappear! This one is really cool, eventhough simmilar illusions have been posted in the past. Can you explain why this effect happens? I would really like to know why! P.S. Due to popular demand, Mac games are bout to be posted ;)

Disappearing Act Illusion

Allright, stare intently at the red dot in the center of the left block for a minute. Once you’ve done this, look over to the center of the right square. It should act weird – by fading out and ‘flickering’. If you move your head closer and further from the monitor (while focussing in the center), you should see some interesting interference effects too. This optical Illusions does the same to you, as the “Baby Illusion”, “Vanishing Haze”, “Disappearing Dots” and “Disappearing Colors” normally do.

If you stare in the black spot for a minute, you will notice all of the color fulffs disappear. This is a rich colored version of Vanishing Haze, and works in a same principle as Disappearing Dots Illusion.

Do you find that black spots appearing? How many black dots can you count? This illusion is a classical one and originally discovered by Elke Lingelbach.
