We’ve featured Felice Varini dozen of times, so I encourage you to check some of our previous articles to learn the background and goals this particular artist set for himself. It’s because I dislike repeating myself. In his newest installation, the buildings in the town of Vercorin in the Swiss Alps contribute to this impressive piece. The set was called Cercle et suite d’éclats. But what I recon interests you the most, is how all of this was turned into practice. Well, the pattern was projected on the town from the vantage point, and then traced and painted. If you shoot a photo from the same spot in daylight, you’ll quickly realize how the town looks flat – almost like a postcard. The interesting part is how he got the whole town to approve this? Painted Basket Ball Optical Illusion

In May 2009, Greg “The Grease” Lehman showed us a relatively new approach to 3D Anamorphic Artwork. His tactics involved similar moves some of them chalk artists use, but with use of a printer we managed to avoid the artistic factor, where normally we would have to get our hands “dirty” to actually paint the image. This time I found a creation done by one of his fans, where you can see the result is quite amazing. Apparently the Spalding we see is just a painting on the street, but when seen from certain angle looks impossibly real. In fact, it’s so realistic that I have my doubts on this one. Perhaps the user that submitted this, sent me the photo of a real ball (by mistake?) that the author used to guide him in his painting process. You be the judge!

Apparently this Spalding basketball ball is just painted on the street, though...

Lienz Street Art Festival 2009

As I already stated, when I discovered Greg Wosik – huge doors to the incredible opus of professionally-made anamorphic chalk drawings opened for me. This year in Lienz (Austria) there was a big street-art festival, and Gregor played a major role in it. As you can see, this time we have some amphibian animals and a giant grasshopper coming out of the crack in the floor, heading towards nearby pond. Since my German language knowledge isn’t that bad, I managed to understand how Marion Ruthardt (another talented artist) helped Gregor with this three-dimensional pavement image. I have also found out that the painting was done in the center of the city. Does it somehow remind you of this painting?

Jack Daniels on Cafe Floor

When we talk about 3d chalk drawings we usually talk about Julian Beever, Kurt Werner, Eduardo Relero or Edgar Müller. Well, just as I started to believe I exhausted all the available material on this topic – I heard about Gregor Wosik! Gregor is an academy-educated Polish lad who migrated to Germany back in 1984. Street-art, murals and oil paintings belong to his particular strengths. In Germany Wosik is primarily known as a street painter. This particular art form gives him the opportunity “to live out his passion”, and maintain direct contact with his audience. His works are characterized as high-quality and detailed. The motives of the images range from classical to current issues.

In today’s edition I bring you a small chunk of his opus. As of lately, huge brands recognized this form of advertising to be particularly effective. Still, it looks like mega whiskey brands gave most attention to this form of marketing . Johny Walker and Ballantine’s did it first, but as we see now – Jack Daniels couldn’t resist jumping in this game too. Please comment which of these 3 brands got themselves the best deal, and why? I’ve included a small gallery beneath, where you may see the same picture seen from few different angles (Anamorphosis !!!)

Mega Sink Chalk Drawing

In spite there was another 3d chalk drawing article posted few days ago, when I found these two shots, they really looked somehow special. The artist behind “The Sink” is a person that goes under nickname mydogsighs. He created this piece at the Southsea Skate Park in south England. Is it only me or can you smell Julian Beever influence from miles away?

“With the exception of the center crew and the black holes, this was pretty much free hand. Getting the perspective on the drop in the center was a nightmare, but worth all the hard work (well, i think so)” – My Dog Sighs.

Apart from writing more about what you can see on the photos yourselves, there isn’t much more to add – we already discussed everything in this field. More on the personal side, I’d like to mention how I heard about this twisted club called “The Box” located in NYC. Apparently its visited by native New Yorkers only, and gives a really unique burlesque experience. Hope I manage to make a reservation for it, while on my NYC trip. Any advice how can I make sure I get in some of the popular NYC clubs, without being left outside waiting? Some tips you locals would like to share? Anyone wants to be my “reference” on this quest? Can’t wait to read your comments on this…

Julian Beever is Back!

I’m not exactly sure when was the first time I introduced you to Julian Beever, but if you check this tag – you’ll see this artist was featured dozen of times on this site. 3D Chalk drawings category consists of many different chalk artists, but in my belief Julian still holds the crown position (in quality and originality). Do you share my view? Since Julian is very busy, his new creations are regularly posted on Mighty Optical Illusions homepage. I have included a small gallery, which includes five of his newest drawings. Which is your favorite one? I like the first one the most. Its becoming more and more popular for big companies to hire chalk artists to do promotion of their new product. Just check these campagins for “Orange“, “Ballantine“, “Johnny Walker“, “Journey to the Center of the Earth“… Marketing professionals are finally becoming real experts!

Ultimate NEW Chalk Drawings Gallery

Probably you are already familiar with the news break of Michael Jackson’s death. I give it to him, he was truly one of the biggest music contributors in our history, yet I feel somehow divided about the atmosphere floating around his name currently. Things he was accused for while living, are the most disturbing ones human being can digest. He was never a positive individual in my opinion, yet millions of people talk about him like he was a saint. I would like to ask them would they every let Michael babysit their kids? Am not sure whether all this is inappropriate to say at the current moment, and this is why I started this topic with the fact I still have divided thoughts on this. Still, it puzzled me so had to share it with you guys. If you wish to comment my standings, please do so without flaming. Brainstorming, discussions and reflections are more than welcome, though. Now when I spilled my guts, we can continue with optical illusion of the day.

How to do 3D Anamorphic Artwork Yourself

Greg Lehman, aka The “Grease” has to be one of the first fans Mighty Optical Illusions has picked over the years. He has been sending us incredible optical illusions all the way back in 2006. You can check the underlined words in this text to see all his previous submissions.

This time he did something really awesome. By now, you’ve probably seen all the 3D Anamorphic pictures that Julian Beever has drawn on the sidewalks, if not check the first category in our sidebar. Well, this is Greg’s version of doing it, simply by printing anamorphic images on paper, of from his computer. Off course, he did a chalk drawings of them first. Can you tell which of these objects are the REAL thing?

Grease, if you’re reading this I still have some of your previous unpublished illusions in my draft, but never managed to publish them. Hopefully one day I will :) Oh and btw, Greg “The Grease” is the owner of top tattoo studio. If he is so good in optical illusions and art in general, I’m sure his tattoos are among the best ones out there! Would be interesting to see more of his tattooed optical illusions, what you think?

Hidden Skoda Fabia Optical Illusion

Be sure you update your Vista gadget, I just made the featured post about it – above. Chris O’Bray found these incredible photos, and decided to share them with our community. This is what Chris said: “You’ve probably got dozens of people sending you this, but just in case it’s passed you by. Check this story and pictures out! Love the site by the way. I use the Google gadget – by far its the most interesting thing on my home page!”

It took Sara Watson three weeks to transform the car seen below, and make it invisible. She made a battered old Skoda “disappear” by painting it to merge with the surrounding car park. This invisible Skoda is now being used for advertising by the local recycling firm that donated the vehicle. Sara was given the Skoda Fabia from the breaker’s yard at local firm, whose owner Steve Jackson described her work as “simply amazing”. Are you able to see the car without any problem? Perhaps our color-blind readers will see it more quickly, as they are better at penetrating certain camouflages (supposedly). Oh, I almost forgot to share that I managed to pass my exam – just 8 more before getting a diploma!

Ballantine’s 3D Chalk Drawing Illusion

Having so much visitors is awesome, the only problem is how to bring in new followers, and keep the regular ones coming back for more. Great deal of you follow this website through some sort of widget, or even more often – through your own RSS reader. This gives you an advantage: you instantly see that the new optical illusion has been posted, and you rush to the site to see it’s explanation, perhaps see more illusions attached inside the post, and possibly leave a comment. Well, the problem occurs on my end. You see the newest illusion, click few of the related underlined links, and then you leave. Then I have to figure out which new optical illusion to post in less than 24 hours, not to loose my steady traffic. This ofcourse isn’t any of your concern, but leaves me tense about continuously finding new content, and asking my self will you like it or not. Well, this is how it goes, and probably won’t change a bit. If you wish to help, you can continue stumbling our content, or email me if you’d like to help me with some guest articles.
