We’ve featured the work of Kurt Wenner before, but not nearly enough given the amazing talent of the artist. In fact, in many cases, Wenner’s art appears to be even more realistic than many of the other 3D chalk artists we feature because he frequently opts to include a back wall into his works, giving them even more dimension. Take this installation at the Waterloo Station in London, for example. Sure the man on his couch watching television has a lot of depth, but by adding a truck full of 3D animals crashing through the wall, it’s easy to feel just as shocked as the man in the artwork.

Here’s another example incorporating a back wall to the artwork. Sure he could have stretched the piece over a long space of sidewalk to play with our perception, but by creating this ad for Celebrity Cruises with a back wall, the drawing looks right no mater what angle you view it from.

Of course, he doesn’t incorporate backdrops into artworks that don’t need them. In fact, adding a background to this reflecting pool illusion might actually distract from the amazing likeness of the actors portrayed in the sidewalk.

If you need further proof that Wenner is certainly one of the masters of his craft, consider the fact that he was the first 3D chalk artist to conceive of an interactive chalk drawing as seen in this photograph from 1987.

Zip-lining across a city street can be fun, but it’s nothing compared to flying across wild terrain. For those that don’t have the time or money to get away from it all though, Wenner offers a grand compromise with this gorgeous canyon advertising the beauty of wild British Columbia.

For more great works by Kurt Warner, don’t miss this piece in the Telegraph, or just visit his website.

I’m certain most of you know about The Beatles, and have probably at some point in your life seen the album cover where they walk across the Abbey Road. The original image of the Beatles on the crossing has become one of the most famous and imitated in recording history. One such spoof was recently done featuring the Peanuts’ gang Charlie Brown, Lucy, Snoopy, Woodstock, & Marcie. Check it out below! The most interesting part is how the anamorphic chalk drawing appears when seen from a side.

For their front cover design (scroll further down), a photograph of the group traversing a zebra crossing, the photographer Iain Macmillan was given only ten minutes to take the photo whilst he stood on a step-ladder and a policeman held up the traffic. In the scene, the group walk across the street in single file from left to right, with Lennon leading, followed by Starr, McCartney, and Harrison. McCartney is barefoot.

It might be interesting to mention how to the left of the picture (parked next to the zebra crossing) is a white Volkswagen Beetle motor-car which belonged to one of the people living in the block of flats across from the recording studio. After the album was released, the number plate (LMW 281F) was stolen repeatedly from the car. The crossing is also a very popular destination for Beatles fans and there is even a webcam featuring it!

By now, I think it’s safe to say that most of you prefer when we feature realistic chalk drawing illusions. Below you may see a collection of otherworldly images that trick the eye. Author is #Gregor Wosik, a street artist from Poland. Although he is not as well known as #Julian Beever, #Kurt Wenner or #Edgar Mueller, his quality work is quickly earning him an admirable reputation! If my memory serves me well, he was the one who created those Jack Daniels anamorphic drawings. While the pictures work form a specific angle, they look distorted from every other angle. Whether the art pieces are composed of natural scenery or fantasy, they are always quite a sight to see! Some of Gregor Wosik’s works can be seen below, and more inside the attached gallery…

We feature a lot of chalk drawings here, but this one stands apart from the rest if only because it is the new Guinness World Record holder for largest chalk drawing. The creation by Joe and Max, was commissioned by Reebok to help promote their CrossFit sneakers (hence the brand name seen on the left side of the canyon above). The creation took a full week to complete (it rained most of the week) and stretches 1,160.4 square meters (3,807 square feet) and is 106.5 meters (345.5 feet) long. That’s a serious jump in size from the last Guinness Record holder for the title, Chinese artist Qi Xinghua’s Lions Gate Gorge, which stretched over 892 square meters.

Here’s an illusion I received from Alexis Monnerot, which was just finished on the morning 21st of September. Located in front of the Montparnasse railway station in Paris, France this hyper-realistic 3D chalk drawing greatly reminds one of Julian Beever and his epic installments. I’m not exactly sure about the author behind this installment, but I’m sure Alexis will enlighten us in her comments!

And as we mentioned comments, remember how I recently improved the discussion section with the ability for you to add pictures inside them? Well, as of recently it seems you have started using this option much more frequently. It provides me with great joy to see how people began contributing more intensely. For example, it seems there is a new trend among you – outlining solutions and posting related illusions directly inside your comments! This was my intention in the first place when I originally imagined this website! If at some point in the past you have asked yourself how come I rarely post solutions to the illusions – I secretly hoped in time our community will evolve and start contributing by itself. Seems we are on a right trail of reaching this right now. My next idea would be to add some kind of voting system to your comments, so that the best voted comments would jump up first. In time, I imagine it would come to that, that a particular comment holding the solution (image attachment or related illusion pic) would rank best. What do you think of this idea? (Just me brainstorming out loud…)

About one month ago, I posted a 3D chalk drawing by Tracy Lee Stum featuring the classic Milton Bradley game of Mouse Trap. Since so many of you liked her artwork, I figured you’d enjoy getting to see another one of her 3D chalk drawings, only this time of a mummy escaping his/her tomb. I particularly like this one because the art is so cartoonish-like, yet it still looks as though it is about to burst into our world of reality. Sort of like an ancient Egyptian version of Toontown from Who Framed Roger Rabbit film. It’s one thing to make 3D art that looks like it’s about to enter our world, but when you manage to make something unrealistic blend with the reality, that becomes even more impressive. What do you guys think?

We’ve seen hundreds of ultra-realistic chalk drawings by now. Over the years artists have truly mastered their craft, pushing the boundaries and making their results more realistic by each iteration. In my opinion, today’s featured illusion has pushed the boundaries even further -by replacing the “chalk” part in “3D chalk drawings” with actual flora (and fauna). Observe how strong the 3D effect appears. It’s almost impossible to visualize the scenery as being what it actually is – flat. I think the original artist has started the whole new trend, and hopefully, we’ll be seeing whole bunch of similar illusions in the near future! The only thing I regret is missing the author’s name. I’ve tried using reverse image search which TinyEye provides (as suggested by my audience), yet without any sucess. If you have any clue about the origins of this photo, also where this installment can be found, please don’t hesitate to share it via comments section!

Update 07/06/2011 – Thanks to our dedicated fans we’ve managed to identify the author behind this monumental achievement. His name is François Abelanet and may find more photos here.

The lead artist behind this work is Tracy Lee Stum, who happens to hold a Guinness World Record for the largest chalk painting by a single individual (as opposed to the largest chalk drawing by a group, which is featured on Moillusions here). Yeah, she’s pretty impressively talented whether working with a group, like she did on this Mouse Trap project, or working alone, like she did on the record-winning Last Supper piece below.

I’m little bit disappointed how none of you responded to my question regarding loading speed of our galleries. This also tells me how most of you don’t give a crap about what I say, as long as the illusions keep coming. I also noticed how I end up with pretty dumb headlines, when my attention is drawn away from illusions ;D

So let’s see if I can fix this with today’s post! It appears the Swedish artist Erik Johansson has joined the pavement chalk-masters wagon with his incredible optical illusion in the center of Stockholm. It tricks you into believing that the giant hole has opened up in the middle of the main city square. The illusion measures 32 by 18 metres and is located in Sergels torg square. Check some of the shots as well as accompanying video after the jump:

I’ve always been quite fascinated by perspective illusions and some time ago I got an idea of trying to realize one in a public space. My idea was to put up a photo in an environment and actually trick people that it would have depth. Street illusions aren’t new, but I wanted to try and make it as a photo instead of a mere drawing – Johansson

While some of the passers-by haven’t even noticed the illusion, others who have had the luxury of viewing the huge illusion from above beforehand, seem to have had a lot of fun with it as the video below shows. Now why is it that every other 3d chalk drawing master ends up drawing holes in the pavement?

The shading effect on the artwork is so realistic, I almost expect to see the balls clacking together. In fact, if you’re reading this Joshua, I think it would be amazing if you created a few similar drawings that could be put together into an animation of a moving Newton’s Cradle. The result would be eerily unreal. And rest assured, if you did decide to do that, I would eagerly put it up on the site as well.

First off, as a new writer to this great website, I’d like to introduce myself to you all. My name is Jill Harness and if you’re an active blogosphere reader, you may have read some of my articles on sites like Oddee, Neatorama and Mental Floss. I also have my own site, Rue The Day, and while it’s nothing too special (most of my time is taken up writing for other sites), you might enjoy some of the content here and there.

As for my interest in illusions, well, I’d say that stems from my fascination with art. After all, to some extent all visual art is an illusion being as how it is really just a pictorial representation of something else. Art revolves around one’s perception of the world around them and illusions are nothing more than selective use and distortion of perception.

That being said, I am a particularly big fan of mural art and when public works of art become illusions, the effect is simply fascinating. These particular examples come from the Bayview subway station in Toronto. They were created by Panya Clark Espinal. The most impressive aspect is their anamophic properties that ensure they can only be accurately perceived from specific angles.

That’s probably enough of an introduction for now, I’m sure we’ll get to know each other better as my time on the site goes on. I am greatly looking forward to sharing more great illusions with you and if you have any you’d like to share with me, please feel free to email me at contact@jillharness.com.

Also, a special thanks to Andrew Willman for the photos of the stair and ladder illusions.

I can’t believe we missed this one – Qi Xinghua is a Chinese 3D Chalk artist (first in his country) whose painting entitled Lions Gate Gorge earned him an entry in the Guinness Book of Records for the largest 3D painting in the world! I’m not exactly sure how fresh this information is, as I could swear we’ve seen bigger. Still, with 23 meters in width, 32 meters in length and over 6 meters in height, we can’t ignore hard work Qi invested into this masterpiece. This 3D painting was presented at the Baiyan Wanda Plaza shopping-mall in Guangzhou (China), and it took Qi more than a month to finish the project. Oh, and one more interesting fact: apparently some people reported dizziness, during their “rope balancing”.

Qi Xinghua says he has calculated three different formulas that can be applied on all paintings of varying sizes. He also added (quoted below):

To put it in the simplest way, it’s reversed vision, which is also called inverse-perspective. From our normal vision, nearby objects are big and far away ones are small. I use the opposite method to make far away objects big and close objects small. In this way, a two-dimensional painting turns three-dimensional.

Don’t ask me why, but I have a feeling we’ll be seeing much more of this artist’s creations in the coming weeks! Even after seeing so many awesome pavement drawings, I can’t seem to perceive below pavement as a flat surface. How about you?

One such fine example is Manfred Stader’s latest work in Trehaus, Germany. It was done for a real estate company celebrating its 25th anniversary. Manfred drew the 3d construction worker, working on a concrete elevator in center of the atrium. BTW, just realized something… is the sole difference between Murals and 3D Chalk Drawings whether they’re vertical or horizontal? Are the murals (trompe l’oeils) more acknowledged as art? What do know about them?

The new concept of designing offices or studios with this unique concept of Optical Illusion is something that started with Victor Varsarely’s work from few years ago, I think. An optical design on the walls makes sense only from one angle and all others just make up for an interesting graffiti like structure. The concept was created by graduates of Chelsea School of Art and Design, claiming it innovative and attention seeking, one of a kind 3D design, yet I think of it as nothing more than a replica of what we have already seen…

Just by looking at his art, can you differentiate what’s real and what’s not? It takes Fredo anywhere from just 30 minutes, to as much as few months to create a single piece! Though there is no doubt he has been inspired by artists, such as M.C. Escher, Fredo’s art definitely has a modern twist. Some of his drawings feature creepy goblins holding physical objects like a lighter or reaching out of the page for a soda can!
