In Encyclopaedia Britanica, I found this comment: "The Poggendorff illusion depends on the steepness of the intersecting lines. As obliqueness is decreased, the illusion becomes less compelling." <br/><br/>I suspect that by tilting the head, you are in effect adjusting the "steepness" of the lines and defeating the illusion. <br/><br/>So if you want to trully appreciate Poggendorf's illusion as it was intended, keep your head straight -- and no artificial aids! I suspect that by tilting the head, you are in effect adjusting the “steepness” of the lines and defeating the illusion.

So if you want to trully appreciate Poggendorf’s illusion as it was intended, keep your head straight — and no artificial aids!
