This one is pretty simple. Reder who goes by the name NYIslanders2121 sent me this optical illusion with following explanation: "Hi! I have been a HUGE fan of your site for a long time. I was browsing iTunes recently and I discovered that the image they give for the band, "They Might Be Giants" is in fact, an optical illusion." I have received many more optical illusion submissions, but I just get them at the rate where I can't follow posting them anymore, for example, I post one and get 3 new... don't worry, they are still in queue and waiting to be posted next ;) What you see below is simple transparent screen optical illusion. Many more similar can be found inside "Transparent Illusions" category.
Albert Einstein was a big fan of Marylin Monroe, a very famous American actress and idol. Their connection was probably stronger than we assumed. I have an evidence photo to show you! They used Einstein's genius combined with Monroe's beauty to create a unique optical illusion. They couldn't be seen together in one place (probably because of Albert's wife, Elsa), but still eagerly wanted a photo of themselves. So Albert used 0.1% of his brain capacity, and thought of a solution. He created a hybrid image of himself and Marylin, where you can see both of them in it, but only one at the time. As you see, if you position yourself close to the screen you will see Einstein's happy face. Now move away few meters, and you'll see Marylin! Surprise, yes Albert vanished, but only for so long until you come near the photo again. I hope you are aware that the story I wrote few lines above, is just fiction, and only crazy idea I got in my head. However, the illusion is 100% real. By the way, I just watched Leonida's 300 in theater with my gf. You really should go and see it, it was amazing!
Carlo Lavini pointed out this US Marines helicopter. It seems that marines can be pretty sneaky when it comes to making pranks. Did you notice anything strange in the first photo of a helicopter? Check the shapes that are part of the camouflage. Get it now? I believe there are no rules that define how the camouflage shapes should look like, as long as they are in proper color, and fill their purpose. Other than that, it should be fine... About camouflage, remember that human chameleons? It should be easy to make similar uniforms, the only problem is then you couldn't move much, and everyone should look at you from only one spot. Invisible cloak, however should have more possibilities.
Remember that show called Movie Magic? No wonder this photo looked familiar to me. In one episode, they explained how to morph photos to achieve similar effect. Wilson Wong took this photo, which works in a same way as our previous "Different Perspective" illusion. Whats even more interesting, is that I had a puzzle from Ravensburger with 3000 pieces of an image similar to this. Ravensburger is a company that produces such cool puzzles and even some made from wood (ever saw those classy wood puzzles?) Either way, this is what Wilson wrote to me: "This may interest you for the optical illusion website. It is my own photo....and it dumbfounded quite a lot of people." I think you will have no problem understanding it, concerning experience you built solving hundreds of optical illusions and magic tricks from this site :) Check for more interesting photos in our Flickr category.
3rd post today. What do you say about that!? Am I awesome or what? What brings me to another question, how long have you been reading Mighty Optical Illusions? My website is year old, and changed many designs in the past. I found this cool Wayback Machine where you can see how Mighty Illusions looked during a time. What was your favorite design? Have you been around with us back then? Check it! I'm really interested in what you will say.
Concerning today's illusion, it's another Multiple Meaning one. User called Παναγιώτης Κατσαλούλης (now decipher that!) sent me three new double images. I'm not sure if I have posted them before, but they are quite amazing. Two of them show a harmonic painting of birds and butterflies, but if you move away from your screen, you may notice beautiful girl's profile. Am not sure who is the author, but I believe he is quite famous. This is what Παναγιώτης wrote me (I still can't understand your name man ;) "Today I received by mail these pictures. Although I am a regular reader of your blog, which is pretty awesome, I don't think you have posted them yet. It is a double image - I hope you enjoy it!"
Peter Qviller, probably inspired by Camel Cigarettes article, spotted the hidden bear in Toblerone chocolate logo. Here's what Peter said: "If you look closely on the Matterhorn mountain on the Toblerone chocolate, you will see the swiss symbol of Bern (a Bear) incorporated into the mountain". I think the bear was supposed to be seen by people, but not many notice it. Can you see it? I'm not biggest fan of this chocolate, but this photo sure gave me inspiration to find some chocolate in my kitchen. Hope I have some, let me check... No luck :( There are few more logos that include symbolism. Remember we talked about Fedex logo, and the arrow hidden in it? Also there was Big Ten basketball confederation logo. It hid number 11, due to later added Penn State team. Mira foundation also cleverly included blind person into their sign.
Siddharth A Deshpande sent another funny optical illusion. If your memory serves you good, you'll remember he was the guy that sent us that Harley Davidson face billboard. In photo below, I think someone misunderstood the AXE commercial, and used real axe instead of that famous Axe deodorant to knock this woman down. But don't worry, it's only an illusion. The axe is just behind her not stuck in her head, so she is probably just enjoying the sun and relaxing. It's classic example of perspective illusion. Siddharth also sent another optical illusion. You can see it under the axe one. No explanation needed I believe. Sorry for no posts yesterday - I had really busy day.
This one is hilarious! Believe it or not, this car hides incredible illusion. Look at the BMW photo user Lev Savaransky from Russia sent us. You probably won't notice anything strange about it. Now heres what I want you to do: take a pocket mirror, you must have one somewhere near you, or just borrow it from your sister. Now place it next to the monitor (like here). Ok! You're just about to see the illusion... Stare at the mirror, until you notice something strange :) Now admit it, you would never expected this! Hehe... I really had a laugh. This illusion was also on the margin of being posted, but what the heck - it may be a little rude, but anyway I think its one of the best illusions posted recently. Thanks WAP! If you like this one, please stumble it, or if you have a website, you can link me. Your action will be much appreciated, and if you send us some traffic, email me and I can link you right back (we have huge traffic) Enjoy... Visit Transportation category for more optical illusion vehicles.
Hey people! Hope you had nice weekend. I was with my girlfriend, and had a mini-vacation past two days. Before I describe today's optical illusion, I'd like to mention offer from our sponsors. From time to time, I have to post these deals, because they help us run the site. They provided us with link where you can earn some extra cash just by filling their surveys. This might be interesting to you I believe. I think you have to be US/UK/Australian visitor to make this work. They need public opinion for some products, and they are willing to pay you up to $80 for answering their surveys. Check when you have spare time. Boca Java also offers 4 bags of free coffee of your choice.
Regarding illusion of the day, here we have what it seems a simple black and white striped block, while theres famous celebrity John Lennon (The Beatles) hiding somewhere inside it. Can you spot him? If not try to move away from our screen. You can also try and squint your eyes to see him. It's really identical to Jesus in vodka cover. If you like these kind of illusions, you can also check Soulwax album cover, as well as our famous test, where you can see if you're color blind.
This photo was pointed out by user called R-Sharp. It's very similar to that Coca-Cola illusion, where rude image was implemented by graphic artist into their promotional poster. I would like to post that illusion as well, but it wouldn't be suitable for young children, so I didn't. Below you can see one with Camel Cigarettes pack. Luckily, this was appropriate enough for me to post. Almost everyone saw this Camel pack, but probably wasn't aware that in something as simple as Camel fur, one can recognize things which aren't really there. Many things have been written about what can be seen below, but I found one rather interesting shape - A Manneken Pis (Grote Markt in Brussels). It looks just too similar to be coincidence. Be sure to look at the front legs of the camel and you will see the peeing boy - the national symbol of Belgium. Cool, huh? I posted outlined hidden meaning inside the post. Similar hidden meaning can be found in these paper bills.
Are these guys under some magic spell? Probably they are, but if they weren't this effect could also be achieved without movie magic, or complex special effects David Copperfield used! It is called Ames Room, and I posted some photos of it already in the past. Here's how the story of Ames goes - In the late 40s, visual researcher Adelbert Ames Jr. designed a series of visual "magic tricks" to demonstrate how the mind forms hypotheses about reality and depth. In one such illusion, Ames tested aspects of depth perception in a specially designed, distorted room, example of which can be seen below.
I added another nice video (as promised before), where you can see the effect a little better. I'm just sorry that those two guys in it look like two retards. Do you share my opinion? Would be much better if they added some heroes of might and magic characters in it, to rush things a little. They would surely add some adrenaline! This is classical example of Relative Sizes. Also, dragon illusion has just been updated with another cool video clip. It may take few minutes until the changes take effect.
Ames constructed a trapezoidal room for the observer to view by gazing through a peephole - in reality one corner of the room is much farther from the observer than the other corner is. When viewed from a particular angle, the room appears very normal.
If a man would stand in the far corner of the room, and a small boy in the near corner, the boy would appear larger than the man because of the distorted perspective Ames introduced. Even though the observer knows that adults are usually bigger than children, he still experiences the illusion! I posted another "modern" Ames illusion photo inside this post, so be sure to see it after you watched the video clip.
Heck, I didn't keep my promise to stay away from this site, until I learn my exam! Well, I decided I can do both If I organize my time well... Do you like long and detailed posts like this one? Please comment :) Once again - Enjoy!
Thanks people for your positive comments about that optical illusion video I posted yesterday! I'll make sure to post more soon! In the mean time I found this nice bicycle illusion. It's an installation, abstract in it's nature. Wanna know what is so strange about it (except that it's sculpture made from iron bars)? Well, you should jump inside this article (if you are on main page), and you will notice that the bicycle is just a mere illusion. It can be seen like this only from two proper angles, where all the little sculptures align perfectly to form our yellow bike. Just like transformers :) Have a great day, I won't be around here today anymore, cause I have great deal of studying to make for my university exam. Enjoy!
Hy guys! Another update before I go to sleep. I discovered new video player Adbrite released, and am currently doing some tests with it. As you probably noticed, usually I don't put embeddable videos on this site. I never liked those YouTube or Google video players. Somehow they make a site ugly to me. This is the reason I never posted them before. Here and then I gave you external link to some optical illusion videos, which you probably noticed in our videos section. However, this video player looks acceptable, and has some nifty options like embedding website logo in it.
As I probably mentioned in the past, I get quite a few video submissions daily, and from now on, I could start posting them. Here's where you come up! I need you to post some comments regarding this, and if you would like to see optical illusion videos post on moillusions.com more often? As a test, I placed really cool Hallucination video, that somehow reminded me of Jimmy Hendrix and his Purple Haze song. It's a variation of Pinwheel animation we already have in archives. I would really like to know how you feel about this, and if I should keep videos, or ignore them in the future? Thanks for making this site better (if you noticed, your opinion is really important to me!)
Siddharth A Deshpande sent some more interesting illusions. Check the photos inside this article - It is well known technique, that occurred first time in famous cocoa packaging from Dutch Droste company. I blogged about it few times, and even posted few droste effect video clips. One of our readers also created Stillwater Reservoir with this technique, and we liked it so much, we have used it in our Optical Illusion of the Day Mac Widget icon.
Here is what the person who took the photos said: "The technique demonstrated here allows one to take very nice spherical panoramas without a pricey or bulky tripod and panoramic tripod head. The camera is kept very close to the body, and the lens is kept over a fixed spot on the ground - the tips of the shoes. The body rotates only once all the pictures in the visible area have been taken, it is imperative that you know how many pictures you need to take, so that you don't look in your camera!"
I made a big progress updating Impossible objects section. It has potential to outgrow the biggest category on this site (outdoors cat)! Don't get scared when you see it - just take your time, and check one illusion at time :) Which of the following photos you liked the most?
Funny thing happened today! I had a meeting regarding a company I'm registering. Me and my friend had an appointment with some well known lawyer, and all of the sudden - my friend farted! At least I thought he did... Boy was I embarrassed. You know the situation when something happens to someone other (even on TV) and you feel embarrassed for him? Well eventually he forgot to turn of his cellphone, that had that silly fart ring tone. You can get it for free (sorry, only works for US visitors), but I wouldn't recommend it if you don't want this to happen to you :) Also, go and check our previous optical illusion, Mosquito ring tone - parent's cant hear it!
Concerning today's magic trick, here is a door hang also known as Magic Card Trick (am not sure why), but can be bought in a regular magic shop right next to shelf where magic wands stand :) Jose Maliel came across this come in - go away ambigram, just like the one I posted earlier. You can print it out, cut it, and then hang on your doors. Like you did with Necromancer or that iPhone cut-out. Funny thing, do you agree? Notice how the meaning changes if you flip the card for 180 degrees...
Brian Morphy improved our strange heads illusion collection. This time we have Volleyball Head illusion. We had basketball player in similar situation, as well as one strange gymnast. It also made me remember our annual "Me & my head enjoying the sun" post. Many of these happen by coincidence, jut like that frisbee one. But let's give Brian opportunity to express himself: "It's Brian Morphy again, from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. I was reminded of this volleyball photo I took when I saw your Basketball Head image from Dec. 21st. It's strictly luck and timing." Make your illusions coming, I post only the best, but there are still many in my mailbox queue. No shortage currently ;)
As I wrote in my posts before, rarely something grabs an audience's attention more effectively than a clever optical illusion. The Cool Hunter shares my opinion, which I'm really glad. Let's see if he notices our link and links us back :) This wonderful mobile transparent billboard for The Red Cross, is currently gracing the streets of San Francisco, using the power of optical illusion to shock viewers in its earthquake-awareness campaign. Sony also used optical illusions for their Bravia LCD. I really like this newest addition to our Billboards category. There were some similar campaigns whose purpose was to shock it's audience and rise the awareness to certain society problems. Just remember The Longest Night initiative, as well as Amnesty International's "It happens not here, but now!" campaign. I like everything that has something to do with charity, and helping people...
Ed Minchau from Robot Guy, was messing around learning to do mesh objects in POV-Ray and stumbled on this illusion by accident. As we see, the image is in full color, but apparently if you stare at the center of it (from a distance of about a foot) for a few seconds, it turns into shades of gray. I had trouble getting this effect, but at the end I managed to see it! Does it work for you as well? It's connected to Hybrid Images illusion, only this time it has something to do with color adapting. Enjoy...
With all that offers like "Free Macbook" or free iPod, one thing is for sure, and not only for US visitors - you get daily free optical illusions on this site, wherever you live :) The newest one was on my hard disk for such a long time, that I forgot who created and submitted it. I apologize to that brave soul, who won't get his name mentioned here. First time I saw it I thought it's only interesting picture, but today I noticed that if you stare at the yellow circle in the center, outer rings will slowly start to rotate. After a while they seem to rotate so fast, you'll think your mind will explode. This animation effect is achieved from those black & white stripes, you see in the background. They have strong effect in almost any illusion they appear in. If you notice anything else in the pic below, some other illusion, be sure to let us know! Thanks...
Friend of my Hrvoje Cota (the guy who sent that cool Basketball Player with ball head), sent me this funny elephant illusion found in the Nevada desert. It's funny how often nature posts it's own illusion creations. We had many on this blog appear in the past. If you remember that funny tree that started it all, following with Rose Illusion. I like them pretty much. Be sure to check few more elephants, starting with "how many legs this elephant has?" illusion. While writing this, I almost had my balcony set on fire! It seems cigarette one of my other friends left, was still lit. Man, glad everything came up right, and that we managed to put the fire out. And my friend can be happy that he is still alive (not from fire, but from my anger :). Enjoy this post! You can see more similar illusions in Multiple Meanings section...
This new addition to spot the object category was submitted to me by Dario Jukica. Don't worry this isn't scary illusion, even though the room you see somehow resembles it. Nothing will pop-out, so you can relax. The task that is given to us is to spot 4 hidden Ninjas inside this room. I think I found only one in the picture frame, maybe I'm wrong. Let's find them all! Dario wrote "First of all the usual stuff...your site is great and has some great illusions...keep up the good work. And now for my illusion...I've found this pic on the net and that's about all I know about it....haven't got a clue is it true or not...are there ninjas in it or no but I was kinda hoping your readers might help me out. I hope you like it..Enjoy"
Matthias Draxler found this cool rug and forwarded it to us, at Mighty Illusions. You won't have much trouble spotting the illusion in it, since anything else than strange ambigram is out of the question. Ambigrams are usually words that hold multiple meanings, depending on how you look at them. Often you have to flip the word to see another word or symbol. Anagrams are quite similar, only they provide same meaning in whatever way you look them. Or was it the other way around? I always mixed anagrams and ambigrams. Don't take it hard on me. I linked some of the words in this article to previous anagram/ambigram optical illusions. So you can easily remember those by following the link. You probably noticed I do this in every post, so nothing new here. Matthias wrote in his email: "I really enjoy your website, and I'd like to submit this cool ambigram doormat I found on the internet. It can be bought in the UK." You should jump inside this article, and see how this doormat looks when it's flipped.
I Still haven't obtained my free iPod from that offer I talked about earlier, but am completing final steps to get it! I'll report when it arrives. Has anyone got it already? Another thing, I will add few more optical illusions, later today. That's about it for site news today. Also, those of you who are on Myspace, can download those funny Zwinky's, and try and create one of their own. I'm struggling to create illusionary one ;) Any tips? Some people just see some smileys when they go there, not exactly sure why. Also, do you know any other service similar to Myspace? Which one is the best? Thanks for your comments!
You ask "how is this computer-generated car outline an optical illusion"? Well, to your surprise, it isn't computer generated - it's real life sculpture, created by British artist Benedict Radcliffe. I got these 3 photos from a reader called Zafar Iqbal, who "just had to submit this". Zafar also added that the sculpture "looks amazing and so non-real". I agree. It's like those 3D street lines, everyone thought were also created by a computer. I think these are magnificent (two more photos inside the post). I like "installation" optical illusions very much, and try to post them as often I can. Many of those are really original, but some are also very abstract. Be sure to check other installation optical illusion in my archives. Enjoy!
Just came home from a restaurant, and got pretty much excited after talking with my friend how he managed to receive free video ipod just by using his email address. I had 3rd generation iPod with touch wheel in the past, but somehow it got broken (I probably bought it here WTF ;). Probably I could make good use if this offer still works. I never had luck with this things, but I'll give it a try. Nothing to lose anyway. I entered my email to get this white iPod for free. If you live outside of the USA, it will probably redirect you to some cheesy smiley website. No luck then. You can try too, so let's wait and see what happens. It's 5th generation version that supports video (only white version is available for free, I think). Report your experiences inside comments please! If I get another one, I'll probably give it away to one of my readers. Stay tuned for more info on my Free iPod quest.
But let's continue with today's optical illusion. It is Google Earth related (not Google iPod). Anonymous submitter sent me this strange Google Earth snapshot. I'm somehow picky with all those Google Earth submissions I receive through my mailbox. Am not sure why exactly. However, this one I found rather interesting. Anonymous said: "This is more of a glitch than illusion, but here is a cars "ghost army" from google earth. The illusion is near Sydney, Australia and Balmain, New South Wales at 33°51' 51.63"S, 151°11'11.69"E" Not only is that the cars appear ghostly, what interests me is what are they doing there at all? I understand how Google Earth satellite images often have mistakes in layers because of different times photos were shot, but how did this occur? You tell me!
Jon Carter attached one of his cartoons for me to include in my gallery. As you see it's funny reference of Lisa Simpson's impossible object. There were other comics on this site that held some kind of optical illusion in them, check out Foxtrot and Garfield illusion comics. This impossible shape you see attached to a vehicle appears often in surreal art. There was even an Escher inspired T-shirt with strange cowboys. Many of these can be found inside impossible objects section. Enjoy...
Siddharth A Deshpande found something really cool on the web. It is a billboard of a Motorcycle company I believe, name of the campaign is "Build Yours", where you are probably able to fine tune your custom motorcycle. Anyway, when I shrink the photo (as seen below), you get impression it's a profile of a young boy - Ashton Kutcher look a like. There are two more example posters inside this article. If you open the pictures in full screen, you will notice that the faces are just a mere illusion, and that it's actually bunch of bike parts just laying around. Fooled me. This is what Sid wrote: "Love you website. Thought I could contribute. I found these when I was browsing the internet. Pretty cool. Faces made out of motorbike parts." If you know what this campaign represents, be sure to comment. The photos aren't big enough for me to see if it's Harley Davidson, Honda or some other non-motor company. Enjoy!
Lynn Haupt emailed me this picture of a boy, probably called Treavor (like the file is named) holding a fire in his hand. I thought it is a funny and smart illusion, so I published it online as well. You may ask how is that the boy doesn't get his skin burned from the fire? It's quite simple, he isn't really holding it at all! I believe this is just a plain "relative sizes" illusion, where the fire is far behind the porch of the house, and is probably few meters tall! These optical illusion are very easy to produce, and this is probably the reason, why so much of them exist. You should make one of your own, for fun at least. But be careful that you hand doesn't melt ;)
Reader who goes by initials Luz T.M. sent me this. The effect probably wouldn't be so effective without his original title. Only when I saw the title of his email (same title this article has), was I able to see the illusion. And I think it's great! Can you see the devil hiding behind the cloud? I definitely can! In fact, now I can't stop seeing him. Am I possessed? Sure hope not! Another thing that I noticed: is that sun eclipse we are seeing that gives devil horns effect, or is it rather a Moon? In my opinion it couldn't be so big and evil Moon. Or could it? Well let me grab a sandwich, and we can have a discussion through comments. If you want to see some more devil appearances, be sure to check WTC Devil, as well as Aphex Twin's Devil optical illusion. This photo was originally taken by Peter Wienerroither, visit his page for more cool photos! Peter said: "It was an eclipse of the sun in May 2003, photographed near Vienna/Austria. And this glorious moment didn't have anything devilish - quite the contrary was true."
This is a well known variation of bent lines illusion. There are hundreds of them, but this may as well be a representative specimen. No matter how much of them I see, I still haven't managed to solve the mystery behind them. As we see, the little black and white squares give the impression of a line that seems to bend from center to outer rims of the background. Quite frankly I don't understand how this effect works. If you examine the picture up from close, you can only confirm that all squares/background blocks are aligned perfectly, horizontally and vertically. Moreover, all of them are straight and parallel one to another. It's like we have all the necessary ingredients, and still the result comes different than we expected. Anyone knows what is this effect called? I'd like to study it a little more... You can see the proof of parallelism's inside this post.
On the site news, I updated Seemingly Bent category with new illusions and updated all the links inside with our new domain redirects. You should still test it, if everything works fine. Peter also mailed me an update concerning his Free Game offer from post below, and prolonged his exclusive offer to Mighty Illusions until Friday, 9th. Get those free games before the offer ends (value $40). Happy huntin' :)
