Ed Minchau from Robot Guy, was messing around learning to do mesh objects in POV-Ray and stumbled on this illusion by accident. As we see, the image is in full color, but apparently if you stare at the center of it (from a distance of about a foot) for a few seconds, it turns into shades of gray. I had trouble getting this effect, but at the end I managed to see it! Does it work for you as well? It’s connected to Hybrid Images illusion, only this time it has something to do with color adapting. Enjoy…

I don’t see it? what do I do?

  6. cooldude says:

I c the back and forth effect. the colors seem to radiate getting bigger and smaller. cool post

  7. Dan says:

If you move closer you see more red but as you pull back the blue is larger.

  8. Jon says:

Very nice! The first effect I got was that it looked 3D, but after I moved closer to the moniter (By estimating how long a foot was) I saw it in gray. Good illusion!

  9. Sarah says:

It isn’t just the colors, but the depth perception of it that changed for me…

  10. Liz says:

I couldn’t get the shades of gray to come up, but I noticed something else. If you are relatively close to the screen (a few inches away) the shades of red seem to take up most of the shape. If you move back to a foot or more, the shape seems to turn mostly cool shades of green, blue, and violet.

    i didnt see anything
i stared at the center and after 20 seconds, still nothing happened

    help??????

  16. Red. says:

    WOWWWW.

    That is AWESOME.

Just stare at the middle where all the pieces meet, unfocus your eyes and try to notice the darkness of the colours, rather than the colours themselves.

    Liz was right too..

    A multi-illusion picture. Like it.

i just dont get it coz i really dont werk xxjessiexx

  21. Elliexx ANIMALS ROCK!! says:

i agree with Liz. it took me awile be4 it became grey, but when it did, the green still kinda showed.

  22. Blikman says:

It does work but it’s a very fragile illusion. As soon as you eyes move from the centre to anywhere else you see all the colours again and you have to start from scratch. I agree with elliex that it does have a green “aftertaste” but the point where all colours are gone does exist…

  23. Julia says:

for some reason i get when i get closer it gets redder but when i back away its not that red anymore

  24. Anonymous says:

Part of the fading to gray has to do with the fact that staring at any intense color for any length of time will cause the color-sensitive cones in your eyes to get exhausted and you will start to see only gray.

  25. Barbie says:

at first i didnt see it cuz i wasnt looking long enouf. but just like, i dont no, look i guess. it worked for me.

  26. Anonymous says:

actually it canges color as u move ur head closer and furgther DUAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

  27. Anonymous says:

yea now i have the gay pride flag burned into my retna but its cool

  28. Mike says:

At first nothing happened. Then I started seeing the gray as my eyes started drooping. Then whole illusion went away as I nodded off.

  29. Jon says:

I think it is harder for people with glasses to see the grey

  30. Anonymous says:

it turned to a weird shade of green for me. stare for 30 sec.
