Just to inform you, I updated another category with recent optical illusions. This time it was our famous Billboards section. As I asked you in my previous post, if you have few spare minutes, check the category I mentioned, and see if all the new links function properly (no broken links, false forwards etc..). Don’t know if you missed our recent Google indexing problem, but if you are a webmaster, or post on some forums/communities/social bookmarking sites regularly, you can help us by linking some of those illusions, and get Google re-index us once again (I fixed noindex/nofollow html error we had). For today’s optical illusion, here is another user submitted one.

Carrie Causey wrote: “Here is an illusion for you – My husband took this picture this morning of a GIANT KILLER SNOWMAN!!! Not really… check out the second picture from the night before. You can see that he just took a picture of the snowy car top and it blended in with the ground behind. I thought it would fit well on your site.” The other photo can be found inside this article. Boy, I’m sorry I didn’t get that amount of snow this winter.

Cute, but there are too many depth cues, that make this obvious.

It looks like it was shot with a wide-angle lens, which makes the house in the background look too far away. Wide-angles emphasize depth, like taking a picture of someone’s face close-up with a wide-angle makes there nose look huge.

Using a telephoto lens, would have made it even more effective reducing the apparent depth in the photo.

Actually, I didn’t use any special lens. Both of these pictures were taken with a 2.5mp camera on the AUTO setting. The car antenna really gives it away, but at first glance it’s pretty convincing!

Awwwww… It reminds me how I didn’t make even one snowman last year… :(

Anyways, Love this one. The stars in the backrounf of the second pick look fake… or are they snow….

  8. Anonymous says:

really? i thought the antenna was kinda a tip off or atleast i was wondering what it was cuz it didn’t look like a stick

That’s cool. I like taking shots like this. To me it was given away by shadows being cut off. and the big shadow of what would seem to be a head
