Through seeing a psychiatrist, it is revealed that the boy mixed up his love of horses with religion. Equus is his God, sort of like Jesus. When he tries to be normal for once and have a relationship with a girl, all he can think about is how he is betraying his God Equus, so he angrily gouges all six horses in the stables eyes out. It was the most powerful, emotional, and mind-blowing piece of theater that I have ever seen. Doesn’t anyone know how amazing this play really is?
