Anamorphic Guinness and Coffe Cups

Damien Toy and Lea Hinchcliff emailed me almost simultaneously about these anamorphic coasters. I believe they are great marketing trick to pull the media attention. As you see you can see the "hidden message" only if you place a cup of coffee, beer glass or cylindric mirror on top of the coaster. I'm not sure if the camera that takes this photos, has to be in right position as well, or you can take photos from anywhere. Marvelous! There are bunch of similar photos inside this post, below the fold. You can check slightly different use of anamorphosis in Ambassadors Skull illusion. Even Walt Disney's characters have been used in similar creation to make a portrait of a famous cartoon artist. Pretty interesting, I should try and make one of my own some day. It's just that I have so little spare time, and so much ideas on my mind ts-tss....

Got that right. I could certainly go for one of those right now.
Anamorphosis is pretty sweet, and I'll bet within the next month or so we'll see this hitting quick stories on your local news, or actually showing up in your local pubs, diners, et cetera. We can all say, "yeah, I've already seen that online...."

After the UK civil war pictures of the king were outlawed. Supporters would paint a portrait of him using a similar technique. It would be painted on an artist’s pallet, with a hole in. When a shiny tube, the diameter of the hole, was slotted into the hole on the pallet, the Kings image would magically appear reflected in the tube. However if you did not know the trick you would think it was just a messy artists pallet.

This is cool... but I dont agree that u can't figure out what's written as it is.
This reminds me of the Secret Portrait of Bonnie Prince Charles. A tray shows what seems to be a blur; but when the correct glass is placed on the tray, the reflection shows the Prince. After 1745, it would have been considered treason to display the portrait and this was the way to do so secretly.
Thie Secret Portrait can be seen at the West Highland Museum, in Fort William, Scotland.

There is one piece of Anamorphic software that is available on 'the net'called AnamorphMe.
Works on several image files ie JPG etc.

In West Bromwich, (West Midlands, UK) there are some of these at the bus station. Mosaic on the floor around a distorted silver coloumn - as you walk around it, you can see the pictures reflected in the coloumn's surface.

love the idea but from the pictures it seems like you'd need to be looking from too low a point.
