i bet the rear wheel is there....the lower frame bar on the carry-all pack around the wheel is horizontal....taking this picture from a downward angle.....creates the illusion of the wheel being gone. size and symmetry my dear Watson.......

I just found out what the generator-type thing in the rear triangle is; it is not a generator, but a Stokemonkey - an electric motor that assists pedalling. In fact, here is a website containing the "illusion" image:
http://bikehugger.com/2006/09/the_bettie_download.htm
and here's the web-site all about the Stokemonkey:
http://cleverchimp.com/products/stokemonkey/

Actually, this is a SUB: a Sport Utility Bike! They are sold by a company called xtracycle:
http://www.xtracycle.com/models.php

You can either buy a bike already set up like this, or you can buy one of their retro-fit kits and make your existing bike capable of carrying a huge variety of loads. I think they're awesome, but I haven't yet been able to fork over the cash to set-up one of my bikes likes this.

I'm not sure what the generator-type thing in the frame's rear triangle is, though. Anyone got any ideas?

Illusion or not, the normal rear wheel on this bike has been removed. There is some apparatus, maybe a generator, attached to the cranks mounted just behind the seatpost. The normal rear brakes have also been removed, evident by the brake bosses sticking out of the seatstays.

I don't see how this can be considered an illusion. The bike doesn't really look like it's floating at all.

Not really... the first thing i saw when i looked at it was the kickstand holding it up. That doesnt stop it from being a neet little photograph... but it doesnt hold its own illusion (Sorry for the pun)
