Actually, there is one physical black spot (in the center).

All the rest are just our eyes trying to recognize the difference between the colors and we're seeing flickering black spots. Can't explain it better than that, however there is only one black spot.

if u look at 1 row and count them 2 the middle there are 15, multiply that by the amount of rows there are around the circle and u get 40. 15 X 40 is 600 plus the black circle in the middle leaves 601,then subtract 1 from each row!!! the total is 586 counting middle spot

This is a POLAR ARRAY. The instructions were to count the black SPOTS (not just the black DOTS) Technically, those are not squares; those are ARCs. Further, there is no spiral here, since the circles are CONCENTRIC.

If it's difficult to count one full layer, just count one quadrant. It's 10. Multiply by 4 quadrants, then each layer (full circle) contains 40 black ARCs (or spots). Counting the depth, there are 15 layers in all so 40 times 15 equals 600.

Others are confused whether there are 16 or 15 layers/full circles. Count the bright white spots minus 1. Since this is 16, therefore, there are fifteen layers in them.

Plus the big circular black SPOT at the center.

Answer = (15 x 40) + 1 = 601.

Haha, just try loocking at it with one eye. That way you'll find the proof there are yero black spots. The illusion appears because you are using 2 eyes to see the picture, and the pictures fro 2 eyes merge together. So in place where you see the white circle on one eye, you see the black block on another.

simple. THERE ARE NO BLACK DOTS, only white dots. and remember, we're talking dots, not spots. but why zero (aside from the center)? it's cause you're brain somehow interprets these white dots as black when you glance around. maybe it's because of the contrasting background colors, (black contrasts white) and the background is black while the grid is white. I don't have a specific explanation for it, but I'm sure it has something to do with your brain interpretation due to contrasting colors. nothing more, nothing less. if you're in doubt, try making a red and green or a yellow and purple one instead of a black and white. either way, the contrast will always appear if it is arranged in such a way as that spiral. remember, contrasting colors!

There are 641 black spots (note that a spot can be any shape and doesn't have to be circular). Each concentric ring contains 40 black spots and there are a total of 16 concentric rings (note that it is arguable that there are 15 concentric rings due to there being no apparent enclosure of the spots on the innermost ring). The last spot is the spot in the middle. So we multiply 40(number of spots per ring) x 16(number of rings) + 1(spot in center) gives 641 total spots (or 601 if 15 is determined to be the number of rings).

Your equation is correct but your multiplication skills suck: 40 x 16 = 640 , 640 + 1 = 641 = the number of black spots.
