This is one of the better optical illusions I saw lately. Image below is in fact animated .gif file, which loops forever. What you have to do, is look at the blue and yellow negative, and then after 30 seconds or so, the photo of a mountain will appear . Even though the mountain you see is gray-scaled (black and white), your eyes are tricked and image looks like it’s in full-color (until you move your eyes though…) This fascinating work was created and submitted to us by John Sadowski and you should check John’s website to find even more innovative posts like this one!

no offense but its fake i was reading the directions and it then turned black and white.But i jumped lol
this is created by exhausting the chemicals that are responsible for seeing colors in your eyes. If you look at a color too long the chemical that tells you what color you are looking at runs out, and you are just seeing a memory of that color. When you look away that color’s opposite is visable… so the picture you look at first is the oppisite of the colors you would see naturally, so when the greyscale image pops up you project the correct colors onto it

If you really read the whole explanation, you will see that the illusion is that you will see is a picture that [quote] “looks like it’s in full-color” The loop only consists of a strangely colored picture (negative colors) and a black and white, there is no full colored picture, but that is exactly what you get to see if you stare at the loop.

It’s not fake. It does switch from the colours to black and white, that’s the point, when it’s black and white it looks coloured. Do you think they expect you to believe that all the sudden the picture jumps to black and white? No they don’t.

Ummm… Whoever you are, “Chelsea,” I hope you do know that *thats precisely the point*. It’s not an “Eff-ay-cake” (facake?). It’s an *optical illusion*. Oh-pee-tee-eye-see-ay-el Eye-el-el-you-ess-eye-oh-enn. *Meaning* your eyes and your brain “trick” you into seeing something that isn’t there. That’s the *point*!
Gosh, why am I even explaining this…
Anyway, gotta say the picture was pretty frakkin’ sweet. Too bad it goes away when you move your eyes. I keep wanting to look around at the picture to see the details of the “color” photo. (And for about half a second I actually contemplated taking a *screenshot* of the color pic before I realized… um, duh. LOL)
And BTW, mangoman, thanks for the wonderful explanation. It makes a lot of sense.

ok…you people are confusing each other. let me try to explain, for anyone confused…
the picture you first see is just the colours of the original mountain, but reversed, e.g. the colours turn into their opposite colours. the blue bit of the sky is orange, etc. after you stare at it for a while the image of the colours become temporarily burned into your retina. these colours will reverse again if you look at anything grey-scaled, e.g. the black and white picture of the mountain.
if this makes no sense, open Paint and draw an orange circle. stare at it for a while and then look at the white screen next to it. does it turn blue? correct answer: yes.
mangoman was right, but he made it sound complicated.

well to all of you think its fake, ur wrong, we studied this exact picture in my psychology class today, Its not a photoshop trick or anything, it happens because of cones and rods inside of our eyes, sum people that are colorblind would see this picture in different colors, their cones which are the ones that percieve color cannot read the same information as people who can read colors the way we’ve been taught them to us. That is so cool! it is supose to turn from yellow and blue negitive to the black and white. then when it turns to the black and white keep staring and the black and white turns into full color!

@Juliemagix: Yes. It does change. We know. There are 2 images connected in a loop. One is inverted color. One is black and white. Are you with me so far? The trick isn’t that the picture suddenly looks black and white. The trick is: (pay attention) After you’ve been staring at the dot at the center of the color inversion for 30 seconds, if you are then shown the same picture in black and white, it will kind of look like it’s in its natural colors, until you take your eyes off the dot and then you can tell its in black and white.
It has nothing to do with “figuring out the puzzle.” There is no “trick” going on. The authors of this post aren’t lying to you. It’s an optical illusion. It happens to everyone (most people?) just because of the way our eyes work.

This is fake, I was pretty sure it was from the start but I printed the screen anyway and copy it to paintshop and I’m still waiting for it to turn colors.
did the same thing and nothing happened. i also noticed that it changes color fom time to time even though you won’t stare at it for 30 s. one word to put it: FAKE
I can see a face in the mountain. It is in the left under the loop. After it turns black and white you can see it.
One way for all of those non-believers out there to see that it is ONLY 1 inverted color and 1 B/W image is to move your eyes around is circles, squares, triangles (whatever, as long as it’s random) while the inverted pic is on, and you’ll see that the image becomes a B/W, and is never in color, proving that it is an optical illusion, not just a loop of an invert, a color, and a B/W.
all i have to say is that this is awesome and chelsea and all you others who say its a fake are losers who apparently dont understand the concept that just because something is interesting means its fake. you are blights on society and i voice the public opinion that if you cannot comprehend something as basic as this that you refrain from spreading your idiocy to the rest of us

people who think this is fake are either one of two things, not critically observant or just plain stupid. One way you can prove it’s not fake is look at the picture and see how long you can make the illusion of color last. Time it. Next time around look away quickly and look back. The second time will not last as long as the first gauranteed and you want to know why? because it’s not fake! So just enjoy the stinking illusion.
i just realized why people think it’s fake, they’re like yeah the picture changed. i wasn’t even looking at it and it changed. WOW! no duh! yeah it changes to a freaking black and white image but if you stare at the dot it looks like a color photo when it changes from the abstract colors. plus if i’m staring at this little box i’m typing in and it changes “out of the corner of my eye” it will still create the illusion “out of the corner of my eye.” people are incredibly stupid sometimes.

we know that there are two pix ryt? the one are the negatives and the other the black and white..!!l00k at the black dot during the negative-colored pix are shown
and when the other picture(w/c is black n white)appears,you can see that the sky turns to blue and my technique is to look rapidly at the grasses and the sky and you can see that it really changes into a colored picture.not black and white nor neagtive…just plain ccolored pictures…
try it again..and you can really tell that it’s true..!!
