This is one of the better optical illusions I saw lately. Image below is in fact animated .gif file, which loops forever. What you have to do, is look at the blue and yellow negative, and then after 30 seconds or so, the photo of a mountain will appear . Even though the mountain you see is gray-scaled (black and white), your eyes are tricked and image looks like it’s in full-color (until you move your eyes though…) This fascinating work was created and submitted to us by John Sadowski and you should check John’s website to find even more innovative posts like this one!

that’s so cool! definately one of the better afterimage ones. when it first changed, i thought it was merely a regular color photograph that was there to trick me, like the “scariest illusion ever” actually has no illusion in it, it’s just scary. then i moved my eyes… that’s crazy!

This is bull. It’s an animation that goes to the greyscaled mountain every 30 seconds or so…there’s no illusion…
Its a waste of badnwitdth is what it is. Just remove it.
at the end is quotes from the instructions basically saying “no duh” to the people saying that it is a gif, or there are two pictures.
how is it fake or photoshopped? that’s the question i’d like to have answered from the people insisting it is.

Maybe I'm broken or something but I didn't see it.. the only thing was the sky looked blue for a second when it changed to black & white.
Whoa, it’s kind of alarming just how many people missed the entire point of the illusion because they failed reading comprehension.
I think the problem we have here is that loads of people nowadays just do not have the attention span to look in one place for 30 seconds and so they never see the colour illusion. And if they do they assume it must have been the computer somehow knowing to change the image to black and white at the precise moment they defocus.

OOOOH!!!! ok, it changes to a mountain by itself, but if you do it right, the you can see the black and white mountain in colour. So it is cool, just the directions aren’t very clear.
Ok so the thing that started this whole virtual fight is the directions. Their unclear. Soem people beleive that if you look at the negative for 30 seconds then it will flip to a grayscale mountan. However in reality, if you stare at the picture of a negative for 30 seconds, then look at the grayscale mountainscape, it appears that the grayscale is in colour. I think people need to stop fighting over this small misunderstanding.
Finnally i want to ask virus and others about their comments on 12-year-olds. Are you implying that all 12-year-olds are stupid and don’t have the mental capacity to understand optical illusions? If not then maybe i got the message wrong, but that’s how i interpreted it. Can you please explain to me if you were or were not implying what i think you were in another coment?
P.S. 12 year olds can also enjoy optical illusions.

People who think its fake here is an explanation. It starts with messed up colors like purple and yellow and than it turns to black and white and back to yellow and purple again. IF u r staring at the dot in the middle, when it turns black and white it will kind of look like it is in its ORIGINAL colors.IT IS NOT A FAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! for people who think it’s fake just take a screenshot of the orange-blue image and one of the mountain image, crop them and recreate the loop image by yourself. Or just look away when the orange-blue image is no and look only when the mountain appears – you’ll see it’s totally monochrome

When I llooked it and blinked the picture changed. I was like “Amazing”, but then i red the comments.
I was getting frustrated because It wasn’t working for me, but after many tries I saw it. That was one of the neatest things I’ve seen. That’s so very cool how that works.
People who don’t understand these are so idiotic and stupid that they can’t even read the beginning paragraphs. I always loved these and understood how they’ve worked since I was 10. People who don’t understand it don’t understand it because they refuse to read a bit of writing, and miss out on a great illusion.
And by the way, it is SUPPOSED to be inverted and then grayscale, the changing between them is NOT the illusion, and all the people who say it’s fake when it switches images, go burn in hell.
Simple solution. Watch the thing and the instant it changes to b/w, hit your print screen button. Then paste that into a word documnet or paint program and look at it for as long as you want. If that’s too technical for ya, then hold your digital camera with the shutter button ready to click, and take a photo. Then look at it. You will see that it is indeed black and white. It’s just your eye post-processing negatives…

For those of you who think it’s fake, YOUR MORONS. It’s suppose to change to black and white. When it changes your brain mixes up the black and white image your seeing with the orange picture you used to be seeing. The mix of colors tricks your brain into “seeing” a full color picture.

That is insane…even the colors invert to where the sky is blue and the land is a natural orangish color….pretty cool.
This isn’t fake. Actually there’s a test where you are put to observe for a hole minute four blocks (blue purple red and yellow) (like in a window) with a black spot in the middle. After the minute your supposed to turn your sight into a white page and you’ll see the same blocks and colors but in inverse positions.

when your brain gets used to the blue and yellow image, the image changes to black and white and therefore the brain “blend” the colors and creates a true color image

i’m sorry but this is definitely fake, it worked for me so i copied the yellow and blue image and pasted it in word to make sure….it didn’t work there even after staring for over a minute…and when i momentarily flipped back to this page it changed without much staring at all

The most amazing thing is the people who truly believe it’s fake. I’m not sure if that’s funny or pathetic. If the peanut works a little download the image and open it with a gif editor to see there’s only two images in the gif, none in colour. You can also see in the code that there’s only one image loaded… If that isn’t enough, well… maybe it’s all a plot from the CIA. Ha.

It is not fake… people who say its fake dun get the illusion… you are not supposed to see it turn into black and white, its supposed to look like colour when you change it to black and white.
Basically it works by “tiring out” your oppositely colour sensing neurons. What happerns is, for example, you tire out your orange sensing nuerons. then when it turns greyish, both your blue AND orange neurons fire, but since your orange neurons are tired, you only “see” blue.
something liddat… if i’m not wrong this would work with any negative-> greyscale picture…
BTW, there are no orange sensing neurons, its actually a combination of colours but the explanation is simplified…

Try putting your hand over part of the image. It’s pretty cool. I’ve got to try a piece of blue paper or something next time.
If your just tuning in, Read the directions THOROUGHLY! The opitical illusion is not the blue/purple/yellow negative turning into a black and white picture. The optical illusion occurs when it changes from the colored negative to black & white.
Rest (not stare) your eyes on the black dot while it’s in the blue/purple/yellow negative. As it changes to the black & white, that picture will now (appear) to be in color. Now, the color will not be vivid, but you can definitely see a blue sky and a little bit of green from the plants (at least it did for me) ENJOY!!

First of all, that’s what I was saying. You just misunderstood me. I KNOW that the orange/blue is supposed to switch back and forth to the black and white photo. I was saying that that wasn’t the illusion like people think it is. The illusion is truly the black and white photo seeming like it was in color. while its black and white you can still see it in colour without seeing the negative part just focus your eyes on the dot again and the sky appears to be blue and you can see a tiny bit of colour in the rocks.
