Many of you may know Maurits Cornelis Escher, more commonly caled M.C. Escher only for his mathematical prints, but he also made much more wonderful art during his lifetime. He is one of the world's most famous graphic artists. His art is enjoyed by millions of people all over the world, as can be seen on the many web sites on the internet like Mighty Optical Illusions homepage is. This Image below is done by Tiles.ice.org community, and represents fusion of Escher's most famous paintings, all combined inside this wondefull picture titled "A Tribute To MC Escher". Click on the image to open it full sized and enjoy recognizing paintings. Can you spot "Ascending", "Rind", "Swans"...?
For those who don't know, this image was created like a mosaic. It's actually divided up into a bunch of smaller tiles that a lot of different artists worked on separately (they could ofcourse see the borders of neighbouring tiles to make it seamless).
I think it's really clever, to interlace Escher's inside-out, topsy-turvey world vision is tough enough, but to seamlessly blend a variety of pallettes, perspectives and themes in to a cohesive image of imagination run wild, that's a challenge!
I'm a fan of his work, and picking out familiar images embedded in the whole is a "Where's Waldo" of the fine arts pile of fun!
