Another cool Illusion provided by Grand-Illusions. This is the idea of the two sides of human character. Have a look at the picture below. On the left is Mr. Hyde, and on the right is Dr. Jekyll.

Now, back away from your computer screen. This effect will work at different distances for different people, but you should see the two characters swap over…! As you come closer to the screen again, they revert to their original characters. Spooky or what! This image was created by Phillippe G. Schyns and Aude Oliva of the Univ. of Glasgow. It proves that we may not be seeing what’s actually there, all the time…

As optical illusions go, we think this is pretty impressive. A short explanation goes something like this. When we look at an object, we can normally see both fine detail and coarse detail. However when we are close, the fine detail will dominate, and when we are further away, we lose the fine detail, and see more of the coarse detail.

Both of the faces you see above are hybrids – each face is actually a combination of two faces. The left hand face shows an angry man in fine detail, but within the picture there is also coarse detail of the calm face. Move away, and you lose the fine (angry) detail, and just see the coarse (calm) detail.

The right hand face shows the calm face in fine detail, and the angry face in coarse detail.

that illusion is pretty cool, it also works if you just squint

also, this whole fine/coarse detail thing applies to pixellated pictures, if you look at a pixellated picture from far away or squint at it, it’ll be more recognisable

  15. Pandas says:

does not work if u squint. least not for me. but that is just creepy, specially since its near halloween…

  16. Lem says:

The 2. face is looking more evil when you`re moving back .. I´ll have nightmares …

  25. annie says:

i had to move back about 6 feet (end of the room) and it still didnt work very well, and contrary to what other people have said, squinting didnt work either. maybe its just me.

  26. i.love.illusions says:

like loser, i used the stereograph technique, and re-focused my eyes to bring the two pics together to create a VERY creepy 3d image. niiiiiice!

  27. bekk says:

i can actually get them to switch without moving anywhere!

  28. Leon says:

I have myopia, so I can switch views
    by just removing my glasses.

  29. Ruth says:

It doesn’t work for me no matter how far back I am, but when I blur my vision (Like when people take their glasses off; I can force my eyes to do that) it works

  30. Andrew says:

It wasn’t working when i backed away and came closer, they both stayed in the same spot. However I had my glasses on. So I Took Them off and they switched when i backed away. I thought that was weird
